View Full Version : 1/2 res High?
Is anyone out there actually getting real time from a 4k clip at 1/2 res High?
I've got a Mac Quad 2.66 with X1900 card and 5GB ram and it still stutters on that clip of the dragster.
What am i doing wrong???

tar for the response, i've tried all Jim's suggestions, turning off histogram and scaling down but still no dice. starting to think i need to try overclocking my x1900?

Don't know where you have the media, Dan.
I dropped the files onto a striped Raid and it plays pretty well off that.
Same set up as you.

Im getting real time 24 fps from 4K clip.
Using 8-core 16GB Mac Pro X1900.
Media comes from internal Raid 5 set.
Hi Robbo,
maybe that's my problem then, i haven't got the raid yet and am simply playing them off the boot drive, though that'd be fast enough for a 28Mb/s file though?

Can't answer that one sensibly
You'll need Lucas or Rob to give the definitive answer there - but even fcp can spit the dummy sometimes playing stuff off the boot drive.
Guess I'm old skool - a media drive is where stuff goes.
edit: Don't think you'd specifically need a Raid set tho' for these shortys - drop them onto one of your other internals and try that.

only got the one, time to go shopping for some drives i guess, really loving this software though, i think Graeme should moonlight at Apple.

BASTARD!
Robbo if you're still around can you tell me whether you're running Tiger or Leopard on your system, starting to think that might be my problem (i'm on Leopard).

Hi Dan - 10.4.11, QT 7.3
sounds like this is the problem. i've some hard drives on order so i'll see if upping the readspeed makes a difference first, if not i guess i'm back on Tiger. Will post my findings.
In case you guys are listening can you tell me why i still can't get 1/2 res High playback from my quad core Mac??
I just installed an internal raid, tried RedCine with both Tiger and Leopard but no joy, what button am i not pressing?? Do i really need to sell my month new Mac and buy an Octo to get this to work??
Cheers

Just for fun... what graphics card do you have? ATI is better than NVidia.
Quit all other apps, close histogram, "Fit" then hit "-" to scale down one size.
If that doesn't work, does it play 1/4 res High?

2K (assuming you shot 4K) at high quality will not playback realtime on a 4-core at the moment. We are still in the optimizing process however, so that might not be the case in a couple of months.
Since you don't have your RED yet I would at least wait with any upgrades until that has arrived.

thanks for getting back to me on this one...
I've got a X1900 and 5GB ram. Having done what you suggested I can get 2K to play at 1/2 Res but not 4K at 1/2 res which other people seem to be achieving with similar systems. Apple have given me the option of upgrading to an 8-core so i may just bite the bullet as i need a mac that can demo the possibilities of Red to clients pretty soon.

Im getting real time 24 fps from 4K clip at 1/2 Res High.
Using 8-core 9GB Mac Pro X1900 with leopard 10.5.1.
Media comes from Mac Pro RAID Card in RAID 5 set.
Is there a way to see playback rate in fps in RedCine? I'm guessing its real time based on smooth playback and the 24fps count in my head.

Unlikely. Personally I assume 15MBs per 7.2k drive and 20MBs for a 10k drive. I know I'm giving it some padding, but that's just been my experience for reliable playback.
Since then i've put in a Raid but still no luck so don't think it's the speed of the drives. All i can think is my x1900 isn't up to scratch.

Thank you Sir. Now I realize I wasn't getting RT playback.. its playing back at 14FPS at 1/2 res. High. On a Mac Pro 8-core, 9GB RAM, 4 drive RAID 5, 10.5.1.

Isn't the playback rate show in the log file as well?

never use your boot/programs drive as your media drive. Not even for DVCPRO -;)

On my 8-Core Mac Pro with 4GB RAM and an 8 drive RAID 5 I can get 18 fps at half rez high off disk, but for a short clip I get up to 54 fps, which I assume is cached in RAM.

Interesting.. it seems that having a RAId is somehow affecting playback speed. Can anyone else report their fps rate at 1/2 res high? Also the ones that reported getting RT playback... is that by visually observing smooth playback or by hitting ctrl+f1 and looking at the fps counter?

To speak for the PC - Community:
Yes you can play the files realtime from an dual Quad 2.66 Ghz with the
Nvidia Quattro FX 3500 Card - and itīs the GFX Card which is important for
Redcine on PC because all of the "Image processing" is done with the GPU.
The only bottleneck is the disk-speed and the decoding of the REDCODE -
and this has to be optimized to get full realtime because my Workstation
is using only about 10 % of itīs speed when playing 1/2 Res high realtime!

Well, there's something I don't understand with this command as it does not seem to show the playing frame rate: i got 160 FPS for 4K @ 1/4 high
I am still using REDCINE 1.0
thanks for feedback,
antoine.
