View Full Version : RedPortal - small RED ALERT helper utility

Just made a small helper app to do the following:
- Enable you to double click a R3D file in the finder and have it open in RED ALERT.
- Give all R3D files a nice default icon, and "REDCODE RAW data file" file description.
- Batch create reference qt's from multiple R3D files.
All features will most likely be in a later build of RED ALERT, so this is just until that happens. I just missed those features myself and made a small app to fill the gap.
Download it here if you like: http://redrental.dk/redportal.zip

And here's an icon you can use for your R3D files.
http://kinema.dk/r3d.png
Download the archive here (http://kinema.dk/r3d.zip) - open it and select the R3D icon on your desktop and click cmd+i. Select the icon and click ctrl+c. Select your R3D files, click cmd+i, select the icons and click ctrl+v. Done! :-)
Disclaimer: This icon is not an authorized R3D icon. I've taken the liberty of using the official RED icon (from REDCINE). Let me know if that's not ok with you guys.

No need to paste the icon or change the default handler.
I updated the app to do this automatically for all R3D files.

If you already changed the default handler for .r3d (Or GraphicsConverter has done it like in my case) you will need to do it like in my video above.
So to get the icon and the file description appering automatically, you need to download the latest version of my little app, change the default handler again (Using CMD+I) and restart the finder.
Then all .R3D files will have the icon, file description and open in red alert.
Hope this helps :-)

Well ... if you can get REDCINE to output timecode and REEL #'s in QT's .... well ... if you ever want to move to New York .... I'd hire you in 5 seconds.

Just Applescript (and sometimes a scent of cocoa) in Xcode.

You are great at spotting my Darker sides :-)
Actually I did a Time Machine system recovery and the FCS system ID was complaining and wanted my FCP upgrade serial.
Unfortunately not something I brought with me.
I've been on the upgrade bandwagon since FCP 3. It's cheaper but unfortunately you need two serials to keep it happy.
Copy and paste sure beats typing it manually.....

Hearing you load and clear, this will be added soon (I know it can't come soon enough)

True. I just installed my system from scratch after an "erase and install" of Leopard. I made at least a couple typos while manually typing my FCS upgrade numbers.

Hi Anders,
I'm sure you are all over this, but I've found this a handy tool for parsing xml's (like the FCP EDL/XML) in apple script.
http://www.latenightsw.com/freeware/XMLTools2/
It could form the basis of a 'true' FCP conform app for REDCINE.

Here is a small movie showing you how to make a proxy batch processing of R3D files:

(Don't forget to copy your RSX files into the folder as well if you want your edited look to stick)

after making 51 aliases of .r3d files, i tried to batch process via ANDERS-save me 1 hour work-tool.....the process is not completed....
for 51 .r3d files i have to get 153 QT proxys.
but 1st attempt:
78 proxys
2nd attempt:
86 proxys
3rd attempt:
48 proxys
can you imagine why?

Hi Anders,
I downloaded your app. and has RedAlert 1.3b4?
However, evertime I double click the .r3d file, it will crash the RedAlert and ask for relaunch. Is there a new version or am I missing something?

Sounds like you are trying to open 16:9 4k material, which is only supported by RedCine at the moment.
RedAlert is limited (at the moment) to 2:1 material in 4K, and will crash if you try to open a 4k 16:9 file.

thanks. I am trying to open the Jon Firestone MARTIAL ART .r3d - hosted at RedRelay. The clips state 2:1 and 4K.
Can you check on those clips?
Anders Holck
01-27-2008, 06:16 PM
I believe they are tagged wrong at RedRelay:
Four shots (wide, medium, handheld and a CU) in 4K 16:9 24fps of martial artist Brian Parchman performing a Ryubo Kata (or so they tell me...). Shot and lit by yours truly and Jon Firestone and Chris Bagley, owners of RED 232...
Try importing it into RedCine and check the metadata window in the shot tab. That will show you the exact format
