Hi all.

I'm finding the project aspect a little peculiar and confusing.

So I want to make 16:9 PAL QTs with TC burnin for the offline process

for example
I create a project :
custom:720*576
aspect : 16*9
shot: Fit Width

This shows a widescreen PAL image with the RED footage stretched and extending horizontally past the edges

If I adjust the x scale to fit the image border (assuming WYSIWYG) and output a DV Pal QT it adds black pillar boxes to the QT...

If I output without X scaling it fills the DV PAL QT perfectly.

Personally I think it's a bug but I could be misunderstanding something here?

System: Mac OSX 10.something, Dualcore Xeon, 2gb Ram.

To make that work I think you need to supply the codec with a 1024 x 576 stretched image (it sounds like you're trying to create an anamorphic DV file).

A better resolution and not much bigger would be 720p HDTV (1280 x 720) which is native 16:9.

Or am I misunderstanding you?

Yes, I was trying to make an anamorphic DV file for import into an Avid.

As I stated but may not have made clear, I was able to do this however the workspace in RedCine showed me cropping the edges off and the final QT gave me the full image in the anamorphic sizing I was expecting to see in the workspace.

As red shoot only 2:1 now I don't think it will fit perfectly dude..

I hate all these options! lol.. to many HD rates as well... anyways..


Robs right.. 1024x576 .. Square pixels.. then scale on import to 720 to
get PAL 16:9 FHA

You clips going off the edges coz they are square pixels.. either squish in X to make them non-square or use 768

Or..
Create Pal square via..


try Project
size 768x576
Aspect 1.3333

Shot
X 37.5
Y 50

For 2k .. should be ok.

we are trying to break 4K 16:9 - so far, we have not - working great - unless we break it in the next few days - we start shooting a feature in 4K 16:9 next Tuesday. 2:1 is more trouble than it's worth.

Well it is 2:1 @ 4K so I can make it fit in 16:9 by either having a letterbox or center cutting it. I was happy to letterbox for offline purposes.

True but it defeats the point of my exercise :shiftyph34r: but what I was trying to say is that I can get an anamorphic PAL QT out of RedCine now BUT it doesn't correctly display it in the workspace.

So in essence I think what I'm trying to say is RedCine is not accounting for the fact that the R3D is square pixel when you are setting your project settings at least in the workspace as it seems to on the output...

Is that a beta function or available on all cameras at the moment? Good luck with your feature :)

Keep in mind that 4K 16:9 will *NOT YET* work with the QuickTime movies or RED ALERT! Just REDCINE. That will obviously change very soon.

Sorry Rob, do you mean as in at 4k (4096*2540) or as in being able to transcode the r3d file to quicktime?

He meant that 4k 16:9 Redcode decoding has been enabled in the latest RedCine build only, and not yet in RedAlert or the QT codec.

So at the moment if you shoot 16:9 in 4K, you can only play and convert in RedCine. The R3D file will not open in RedAlert and the QuickTime reference files created by the camera will not be playable in the current QT codec.

If you want to open your files using RedAlert or The QT codec you currently need to choose 2:1 aspect 4k in the Camera, until RedAlert and The QT codec are updated to support the new format.

not sure I've followed you all the way, but I have output pal D1 scaled and anamorphized:

project 720x576
scale x: 35.15625 (720/2048)
scale y: 50 (576/1024)

I am not using AVID so from there I am not sure, but in premiere you can set the pixel value, and when you set it to pal 16/9 (so 1.4222) it displays correctly. My problem is that I would like avi not mov.
