With the current firmware can we remotely start/stop the RED ONE? I have a commercial shoot coming up that will be mostly shot off a Jimmy Jib...what cable is working?

Client: Ford Motor CO.
Project: Theatrical commercial (Shown in theaters ahead of the movie)
Prod. Co.: Spy Films
Market: Canada & France
Director: Javier Aguilera
Director of Photography: Dion Beebe, ASC
Second Unit DP/B Cam Op.: Evin Grant
Redninjas: Blair S. Paulsen & Brook Willard

This has (and still is) an amazing shoot, the hours have been brutal but Dion is a genius. He deserves all the praise and it's obvious why he has an Oscar. I'm truly in awe. I can't reveal much about the actual commercial or show footy yet but here are some stills from the shoot.

I was operating the Wescam gyro helicopter mount from Pictorvision the first day. I used a cheap air bulb powered still camera release to run the camera.

The top rails came in very handy mounting the rain deflector upside down for use on the Scorpio head.

This is the Pursuit Arm (Porsche), not to be confused with the Ultimate Arm (Mecedes). Bitchen rig with the 1st AC & Driver in the front, Dion and Javier (Director) in the back and the Crane Op in the cargo area.

Top: Dion operating A Cam and myself on B Cam.
Middle left: The gentelman on the left is Key Grip Steve Cardellini, you might have used some of his great clamps.
Right: Blair S. Paulsen checking exposure.
Bottom:Even Dion's filter case is impressive.

Tomorrows the last shoot day, I'll give a final account then.

Preston makes part #4543. It's a RED remote cable from the 10 pin connector to the MDR2.
Don't know if its VTR start/stop in the 10 pin connector is enabled yet though.

Otherwise try and contact Fred Davis at http://www.productioncableservices.com/

I'm sure he can make one for you pretty quick, if you send him the diagram and pinout of the RED connector.

Looks like you questions have been answered, can't help you finding anyone to do it, but someone who makes up of cables won't have a problem with it given the correct pin-outs from the camera and MDR. Just a few points in regards to the cable Rocketeer had made:

The MDR 2 has different pin-outs for control than the MDR 1, so make sure you get the right wiring done (Majority of prestons run MDR 2 here)

I believe that the run on the 4 pin connectors on the back of the camera are now activated, but I would recommend getting the cable made to work via the RS323 / AUX port. It is a more expensive connector but very robust & it will free up the other connectors at the back for power out accs.

Also, the RS323 option will be backwards compatible with previous software builds. It would be very frustrating to be forced to downgrade to a previous version of the firmware only to find that the remote run no longer worked.....

Build 10 and 11 firmware also support record start / stop using the upper of the two 4 pin LEMO connectors on the camera back.

Provide a trigger pulse by shorting pin 1 (ground) to pin 2 (GPI) momentarily.

An appropriate connector is LEMO FGG.0B.304.CLAD42Z

Connector pin out is in Appendix A of the latest Operations Guide at www.red.com/support

Thanks Stuart
I am having trouble finding someone who has the connectors.

It looks like the same connector as the 'mini-monitor' connector on Arri video taps. Correct me if I am wrong, but you may be able to cannibalize one of those cables eaiser than finding an immediate source for the connector.

Mouser has the parts. Search by the lemo part number listed in the Reduser guide. You have to order the proper collet and strain relief in addition to the plug.

FGG.0B.304.CLAD42Z
style.shellsize.30+number of contacts. CLA= solder . collet diameter= 42 (3.1mm-4.0mm). Z= needs a collet.

I have been searching...I dont see the 42 at Mouser, they have a 35 and 52.

Mike Prevette

they do. FGG.0B.742.DN is the part number for the collet. They appear to be in stock for everything you need.

heres the link: http://www.mouser.com/search/refine.aspx?Ntt=736-FGG0B742DN%09

so you need (mouser part numbers):

736-FGG0B304CLAZ (plug)
736-FGG0B742DN (collet)
736-GMA0B035DN (bend relief)
OR
736-GMA0B040DN depending on how big your wire is.

Thanks...ordered.

what is the cable you typically use for these?

Mike Prevette

In an emergency? CAT-5 or telephone line! Or carving up a USB cable!

Radio shack has some options.

If I have my choice, I get some Canare. I don't have any part numbers from them. Try to find an electronics shop, and ask them about what small gauge, 4 conductor wire they have in stock. You will need a fine tip soldering iron and a steady hand.

Look at your other cables that are similar size, and try and find a part number for it.

Good to see you on here Jim!
Glad to be here. I have been contacted by several Red owners regarding purchase of my wireless follow focus with their RED cameras so I thought I'd drop in.

We share the same philosophy: Professional quality equipment shouldn't have to cost a fortune to do the job. It is amazing how much resistance that idea gets.
