View Full Version : Monitoring from the Preview HD-SDI or HDMI o/p..
Hi,
We're shooting an Indie Film, and I'm looking for a reasonably priced way of Monitoring the output from the HD-SDI or HDMI outputs on the RED.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

The cheapest way is to go with HDMI and use an HDMI 720P computer LCD or HDTV. The key with using a computer monitor is to find one that matches the output resolution of Red with HDMI (I believe Red outputs 720P via HDMI) because computer LCD monitors have poor internal scalers because they are designed to be fed the native resolution of the display. HDMI equipped HDTVs are specifically made to view 720P and 1080i/P resolutions so they will look good - but you do pay more for an HDTV than a computer LCD monitor of similar resolution.

For the lowest cost solution, pass on monitoring via HD-SDI, and either monitor directly with a RED-LCD, or use the HDMI port to a DVI equipped SXGA+ computer monitor. I have used a LG L266W (1680 x 1050 pixel) ~ $280 with good results.

I like EIZO Monitors.
FlexScan S2111W (1680 x 1050) http://www.eizo.com/products/lcd/S2111W/index.asp
FlexScan S1932 (1280 x 1024) http://www.eizo.com/products/lcd/s1932/index.asp
Both are designed for viewing moving pictures and have reliable color rendition.
The S1932 has a BrightRegulator function that adjusts the screen brightness in accordance with changes in the ambient brightness.

If you watch NewEgg for their sales, you can get an Acer 20" at 1680x1050 for under 200.00 USD delivered.
Here is something else you may need
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=3872
Gives you up to 150ft at 1080p.
