Hi Mark

I see an EVF and what looks like a marshall working in your picture.

Details on the EVF please. The EVF is what I want and would love some information on it.

Are both the EVF and marshall working simultaneously?

Stuart English

Yes, Mark is testing some new camera firmware for us Finner. This firmware supports RED-EVF plus 1280 x 720p PREVIEW HD video (complete with frame guides) at the same time. So you could have - RED-EVF plus four 1280 x 720p outputs - three via HD-SDI plus the HDMI

simply awesome. actually, can't imagine working without it now. Having more "hot buttons" to toggle meters is really great -

Just speculation, but if the arm always has to be locked, then you'd have to unlock it and lock it when you make any small adjustment. If that's the case it's more of a hassle to tilt the viewfinder up or down, which I find I need to do a lot of in a days shooting.

You have to have the longer plate to balance the Optimo, the plate usually comes with the lens. The plate is the older style that wont mate directly to the newer OConnor heads....so he has the OConnor QR plate under it.

Thats all standard fare Greg, I was just wondering why he had the RED base + an Arri base + then the dovetail. Why not just skip the stupid Red base, and go strait onto the Arri one.

I'm guessing the Arri base was the only one available and it was 15mm, and they wanted 19mm AKS and support for the Optimo.

And who needs the fancy pants arri/oconner dovetale anyway! ;)

sorry, I didnt notice that he had the Red base...you are correct sir. Maybe he let the $100 grip rig the camera.
(I knew Mark was retarded) :)

btw- once you go "fancy pants" arri/oconnor dovetail, you never go back. (besides you lose almost an inch with it)

Brook Willard

Not true... I had the 24-290 working on a 12" dovetail today. All it takes is beefier rods. The 12:1s that TCH has are supplied with thicker-walled rods to negate the need for a longer dovetail.

Generally I'll use the head's QR with a 12" dovetail set to shift the camera farther back than usual to compensate for the hubble up front. Switching back to primes can be as simple as pulling the lens, rods and lens support or as complicated as removing the camera from the dovetail and flipping it 180˚ on the QRP to bring the CG back to a convenient prime lens location.

Those little Pelican CF cases rock, btw. If anybody in the LA area needs some, Film Tools now carries them. I ordered so many for the Red Ninjas that they just decided to stock them from now on. :)

Mike Prevette
12-14-2007, 10:33 PM
but could you get it balanced? Thats what the longer dovetail makes easier. Of course you could hang the batt+drive cage way back to get some offset.

Brook Willard
12-14-2007, 10:39 PM
I keep the drive cradle in its usual position: either on the back at a 45˚ angle like a magazine or on the camera body's right side to offset the weight of an onboard HD-SDI monitor. We're not cool enough to have EVFs yet. :)

The camera balances perfectly with the short dovetail on the 2575's QR. I don't think I have any pictures of the way I usually set it up, but I may sketch something to explain it a little better.

Hi Emmanuel,

2 of the pictures display fairly obvious clipping.

Stephen

these are down-and-dirty "on set" grade references done by the gaffer & DP from 4K tiffs - the clipping you see is intentional - we have pulled lots of their stuff into our Scratch suite and the dynamic range in the stuff these guys are shooting is amazing -

I can't tell you what the budget of the films is, as it's the producers job to represent it HIGHER than reality until the film sells to a distributor - but it is LOW and I will say this - I have been working in the world of independent features for 20 years - and I have never seen a film with TWICE this budget look this good. Period. Shooting this film on the Red had added SIGNIFICANT production value to the film.

I am very sad to retire Elvis and Mr. Bond tonight. But they did have a great ride.

Sanjin Jukic

Nice stuff, Mark.

Thanks Concrete. Got to tell you - Bijou Philips is REALLY cute in person ... really fun, talented cast on this project.
Lead role in the film is Jake Hoffman http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0388933/ - he is Dustin Hoffman's son.
Devon Aoki from Sin City/Fast and Furious 2 - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1226817/ is also not hard on the eyes (or the sensor!)

Sean Lennon is creating the original soundtrack.

Mark L. Pederson
12-21-2007, 05:02 AM
Also we would need here at the forum more material like this that shows RED's dynamic range in "a good light".

Thing is ... "a good light" is VERY subjective. DP's clip highlights intentionally on film all the time, etc.

We find the most impressive thing to show people is the REDCODE RAW file with no correction - then "swing" the image around in Scratch so they can see just how much room they have.

Maybe we'll make a split screen "dynamic range demonstration" in H264 after the holidays.

The crowd on REDUSER is pretty damn critical, and it always takes me some effort to get people to agree to releasing images on the web - we do our best to share what we are up to and post stuff -

At the end of day - a BUNCH more people will be shooting and posting images very soon - I will actually feel a little less pressure - that being said, I love to share this stuff -

Sanjin Jukic

Mark,

This is definitely good looking stuff, and if the clipping referred to is the one with the winged muse or whatever, then I can't see any other way to have shot that but to get those whites blown out. I am one of those critical people on the forum, if only because I have decided to go with RED all the way and want/need it to be the best it can be, but seeing images like this does truly make me feel better. It is important for people like you to post, amid the sea of footage out there, because your work is consistently among the best and needed to keep tipping the scales upwards in RED's favor.

Looking forward to some split screen comparisons,

I just saw ATONEMENT (awesome movie) in a theater and then read about shooting the film in AC issue December 2007 article "Irretrievable Deeds" by Jon D. Witmer (page 32).

Interesting and could be somehow related with "clipped highlights" discussion here.

Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, BSC used Christian Dior black stocking to emphasize the heat light.

http://homepage.mac.com/sanjinjukic/RED/dior-stocking-filter.jpg

American Cinematographer Online edition (pages 34-35)>>> (http://www.ascmag.com/magazine_dynamic/December2007/Atonement/page1.php)

It could be interesting if somebody try to put Christian Dior stocking on the lens with RED and to see what is the effect.

Actually I do fancy calling clipped what is a total loss of details at capture time, while I call blown Highlights what can be an intentional pushing "towards" pure white, wich is best left to post in most case.
I should have been more precise from the top, my bad, I hope I've put a good light on my fancy now.

Not bad but as I mentioned here ago that I prefer and like more

New York's eighties or Gordon Willis's "the prince of darkness"

lighting aesthetic that has a "real life" movie color/light contrast.

It's more dramatic (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern!) than an ordinary flat

and clean video image.
