Hey guys,

Been a bit out of the loop lately. I heard that Red's Nikon mount has been pushed back somewhat. I was wondering if this was due to developments to the mount to allow 'G' (short for: 'Greatly annoying' I believe) lenses without an aperture ring to be used?

Is this the case? Or is the Birger Nikon Mount the only foreseeable mount that will support 'G' lenses?

Cheers,

I heard that Nikon was recently bought out by Canon!

Cheers,

With a bit of research, I think you'll find that Nikon's line of G lenses emerged before RED ONE was a twinkle in Jim Jannard's eye or, at least, before the announcement of RED ONE's development, almost exactly two years ago.

It is much more likely that the development of the RED Nikon Mount was delayed by the changes to the PL mount--first things first and all.

I don't think RED has any intention of producing an electronic Nikon Mount themselves, since they apparently have some kind of agreement with Birger Engineering for that kind of functionality. I think Jim HAS mentioned, however, that there is a second independent company developing a Nikon Mount as well. He invited them to step forward, along with Birger, a week or two ago to announce their plans. But no third company stepped forward with an announcement.

Whether a third mount materializes and whether it is to be electronic or manual would be pure speculation at this point.

They'd be the better option if they could build it with AF-D focussing support, instead of just AF-S, which is the case with the Birger mount.

Maybe, maybe not.

The difference between the AF-D and AF-S lenses is that the focusing motor is integral to the AF-S lenses, so with AF-D lenses an external motor would be necessary for focusing.

This may be possible with a RED MOTOR or some other motor, but I don't think it's as elegant of a solution as one that's integral to the lens. It is also not likely to be as cheap. The price of a RED MOTOR in the store section of red.com is $1,250, so I'd expect something near that price for an external solution. Also, I already expect to buy a RED MOTOR for zooming functionality and would prefer to have only one external motor mounted at a time, even if more than one is possible.

I'd be happy with a nice solid manual Nikon mount so I could use my Zeiss ZF primes that have been modified with focus rings by RP Lens.

Great glass, solid build, great bokah, minimal breathing. A 25, 35, 50, 85 and 100mm is a nice selection. Now if they only made a 12mm T2 and a 25 T2 instead of 2.8 that would be even sweeter.

Would also hope you could easily switch between PL and Nikon mounts in the field... probably a fantasy.

As it is, I'm eagerly waiting my Red primes so I can go all PL with the two Red zooms.

But with no Nikon Mount, and no Red primes and a camera due in January, I'm currently stuck with one wide prime and a rental situation.

Anyone got a nice set of Ultraprimes for cheap?? heh heh...
