View Full Version : Avid MC Workflow with Resolve 8

Same question Ive asked in the FCP workflow topic.
This time around its with Avid.
Using AMA on the Mac side, how is it possible to export XML/AAF with all the clips as linked?
Im getting the error on the AAF side that this cant be done with AMA?
I can spend a few more minutes tinkering but I figured to ask here first :)

After a few days of research Im starting to think this is a lost cause.
Reading a few threads at CreativeCow states that it can be done using AAF.
Ive yet to get past the export stage.
I find this odd since I can just export the ProRes 4444 and keep its resolution and work in FCPX.
Its just too bad there isnt an option to get back to Resolve from there.

You need to make sure you have 'use AAF protocol' checked in the AAF export pref. in AVID

JasonThanks Jason that let me go thru, now to test :)

I had to import the R3D into the Media Pool according to the errors in import.
However that still left me with empty clips.
The R3D clips are the same however the original placement of the clips are from an external.
Shouldnt they work even though its placed in a different drive?

So I started a new project in Avid using different R3D clips.
I put two AMA clips with a cross-fade then exported to AAF.
I got Resolve to recognize them and did some basic CC.
I then rendered them to MXF.
Now I rendered to one single file which I guess is wrong if I wanted to round-trip back to Avid.
Question is, how do I do that?
I placed the MXF in my Avid MediaFiles and tried to force it in and no go.
Surely there's got to be a workflow tutorial somewhere?

MichaelP (the very nice guy from Avid who spends a lot of time on Reduser) said both companies will release a tutorial.
Until then, read this thread:
http://community.avid.com/forums/p/98789/568191.aspx
Here is what they say with the bit that's useful to you bolded:
>
MichaelP: Resolve 8 does support AAF so you can send a span or the entire timeline.
Dude: is that AAF with embedded media or may the AAF also serve as a reference pointing to avids managed media folder, so media files in resolve would be used directly from that folder?
MichaelP: The latter. AAF "link to" and you can point to the Avid MediaFile folder. Once corrected, render out new MXF files that are put back into the Avid MediaFile folder. Then "relink sequence to selected."
Dude: does it overwrite the original files then, or how does avid know how to relink. Or just put it in a different folder like mxf/2 ?
MichaelP: It does not overwrite files, so you can do it either way. In MediaTool, resolve adds a commment to the Comment column "created with resolve" so you can quickly sort and find the files to drag into your bin. Once in your bin, highlight original sequence and new color corrected files and do a "relink to selected."
Dude: well thank you very much for taking the time to answer this. Is there a source on the web you'd recommend for more avid / resolve tipps?
MichaelP: There is a step by step giude that will posted soon that reviewed with Blackmagic that describes the steps for the above.
Dude: if I use red or alexa material inside avid, and for convenience transcode it to an offline resolution, THEN export the AAF to Resolve. Can I then tell resolve to "relink" to the original camera raw footage instead or as well?
MichaelP: Yes.

Thanks Bruce for reply :)
I thought this workflow was older and proven.
Did not know it was fairly new.

I thought this workflow was older and proven.
Did not know it was fairly new.
The whole concept of the editor being in the same facility where the grade is done is new.
What is older and proven (and has worked for AGES is):
1. Film or commercial is shot
2. Place with telecine gives tape to Avid editor with footage, one-light color-corrected
3. Avid editor digitizes tape and does offline edit
4. Avid editor sends over edit, with handles
5. Edit loads into DaVinci NO PROBLEM
6. Everyone hangs out at place with DaVinci and makes it look awesome.
7. Now we have a new tape with the footage we need.
This works very well.
Since they only recently took the price of DaVinci down from like $100,000+ to $1000... Now we can have the DaVinci and the Avid sitting next to each other, copying stuff into Avid Mediafiles, etc.
This is all new and awesome.
But the old way still works. You can do a million variations on it too.

Well I tried the "relink" option and still no go.
I rendered the clips from Resolve using MXF and moved them into a different Avid drive and still no go.

Are you still doing this? How on earth can Avid re-link one MXF file to two clips?
You need to set Resolve to render out each clip not just the whole timeline to an MXF. Read the manual about how to do that. I have a deadline, so am out, sorry.

www.boacinema.coYes Resolve did a great job and render the two files and named them exact. However the R3D files from AMA has 4 extra digits e.g. 0001 at the end of it and the MXF from Resolve didnt. Ill see if I can rename em and trick Avid :)
As you can tell Im not giving up and cant wait for that White paper to be released :)

OK back for 5 mins - do you see the file that DaVinci rendered in your bin in Avid?
Try bringing it in with the Media Tool - we use that. Drop the stuff into Avid Mediafiles, find it with Media Tool, pull it into bin. Not sure if it's the right way to do it but it works for us 100%.
Anyway, don't have time to do this at the moment since I am on a deadline on a machine without either DaVinci or Avid for the rest of the day - um, check the Avid forums? Or just wait for a whitepaper?

Actually FilmMaster had been doing just that for a couple of years now. And so is Baselight. On top of that, FilmMaster can even access Avid Unity for an even greater integration. Said that, FilmMaster still at least $150k:-)

Just in case anyone needs this:
Eric,
Put all the clips - original and graded ones - in one bin (if not you'll have to repeat steps 1-5)
1. Select all the clips
2. Choose Modify from Clip menu
3. From pulldown manu choose Set Source
4. Put whatever Tape Name you want
5. Hit OK (several times...)
6. Select graded clips and - at the end - sequence you want to relink (this is where I goofed up)
7. Choose Relink from Clip menu
8. Choose Selected items in ALL open bins
9. Uncheck Create new sequence (if you want to)
10. Hit OK
Tell me what happened.
As I stated over COW's forum - I'm not sure if changing Source manually doesn't mess with anything inside AVID.
Cheers,
M
I want to thank Marcin Zwolski for the above tips.
