I'm waiting for the delivery of a brand spanking new MacBook Pro 2011 and am wondering whether Resolve 8 (either light or full version) is usable for onset viewing of quick grades? I fully realize that for major work, a fully equipped MacPro (I'm waiting for the new ones to come out!) will be the machine of choice, but I'm wondering if the MacBook Pro can work.

Yes, you can use Resolve Lite on set with a MacBook Pro.
It is likely to be slower than real time, but still pretty fast-especially if you compare to Color or Color Finesse.
Be careful of your monitoring choices. I'd aim you at UltraStudio 3D and a real monitor with built in scopes if you can afford it.

I've been using Resolve (not lite) for some grading on a 2.2Ghz 2011 MBP. And it works about as well as well as color did on my old 2007 machine, which is to say, not very well. But I'm trying to hold out until a new Mac Pro comes out or at least Intel releases the new processors and building a windows machine or hackintosh.
That said, I AM using it. So it does produce results. I get realtime with 1080p prores footage and basic correction. As soon as I ad a qualifier or power window, the playback drops down to between 10-14 fps. On really crazy grades with tons of nodes, It'll drop down to 5fps.

A couple of things you can try, on the settings tab, set the resize scaling to bi-linear and on the project tab set the monitor bit depth to 8 bit. you can also try setting the timeline resolution to half the source image res as that may help.

I'll have to give those tips a try. Perhaps tomorrow, though it's Alexa footage tomorrow.
