Oh ok. Thanks David, I guess that explains the lack of info.
I can't quite understand the need for an NDA. Tends to imply there is info that someone wants kept secret and I'd always assumed LART was to be a relatively open event.
Paul
It's late and we are all very tired after two stupendous days of multiple RED cameras testing various 4K and 2K elements. Elements the LART team identified as missing in the "user data" of RED cameras since it's release. LART exceeded my expectations. The level of talent, equipment and the professional effort contributed were simply amazing. To quote one individual. "There were no milk girls here at LART.":)
NDA
It is quite simple - RED provided LART with as yet unreleased RED equipment and support with a request that we not release the info or test results until after RED's official announcements. Good business all around. We had some of the best in the business testing for feedback to RED and we will and can release the info after the public announcement is released by RED. That is the NDA story plain and simple. No, conspiracy theories here...
Canon Mount/DSLR Glass
The Canon mount situation was simple - Erik fell very ill at the 12th hour. Let's all wish him a speedy recovery. GibCor will get the Canon glass tests for redusers as soon as Erik is recovered thanks to Ketch Rossi and other LART team members that have volunteered for a pick up day on this - minor delay, not a major loss for the LART mission/goals. It's coming sooner than later so standby on this follow up.
Daily Posts
Thank you for the support and enthusiasm for LART. As you all know, we pulled this off with no funding and completely based on volunteer efforts. The LART test teams were all working feverishly through out the two days. There simply was not enough time to post anything. That said, look for a very cool, informative and useful stream of data on reduser over the coming weeks. I say weeks since there is some very fun stuff that will require post production time before the VUZE downloads will be online.
LART location and talent
Where to begin? Thanks to Dave Parker, founder of Pelican products, for allowing us to use "Dave's Garage" to host LART. His facility and collection of classic cars took LART to an amazing level. Billy Summers and crew for showing up Friday to pre-light and set up the LART testing stations. The talent and models that volunteered their time to LART were first class. The girls were stunning. The make up and wardrobe departments were stellar. One of Hollywood's best stunt coordinators was there both days. A group of SEAL team stunt men and martial arts specialists volunteered their time and expertise - and the list goes on.
Special thanks to LART coproducer Kyle Baker for wrangling everything from talent to location - Blair and Brook for their amazing efforts and talents as DP's/operators and as LART Directors - the VFX team and way more other volunteers than I am going to list now.
LART Usefull?
Gibby is in transit but by late Monday will post on reduser regarding LART data flow, information release and more. Much much more will follow. Imagine a struck set with David Mullen, Matt Uhry, Charles Pappert and other DP's along with Ted Schilowitz, a RED camera and a series of as yet untested lenses. Hypothetically imagine the RED 50-150 on this set? I'll say no more on that concept. This was only one of many LART testing set ups.
Imagine - NIGHT EXT - fire dancers with multiple red cameras shooting a variety of lenses at several different camera settings from 4K 24fps to 72fps.
Imagine a Hollywood style fight scene with classic cars, girls and SEALs shot with 3 RED cameras simultaneously. Hand held RED 18-50, Actioncam, RED 300 and RED 50-150 lenses.
I am going to stop there for now.
Gibby will launch a new thread soon that will replace this one to share the LART RESULTS. We will endeavor to provide everything from .r3d 4K downloads of blue screen tests thru to the highest rez possible of test footage with our VUZE partners on the GibCor channel for redusers.
I'd also like to acknowledge Lucas Wilson and the SCRATCH system from ASSIMILATE. Luki was there both days and blew everyone away with the ASSIMILATE solutions and his talent.
Was there a benefit from LART?
The key difference here is that actual footage and files will be available to redusers unlike the pictures and posts from other client driven RED shoots to date where these items were not available.
Long live the revolution,
Sharky

Ya, like I said - way tired. Read 4K 24fps to 2K 72fps. DP'd by Billy Summers and going to be a big hit when available on VUZE.

So Brian Goff was flying the actioncam rig.:weight_lift: He just e-mailed me that he had a blast and the cam is great.
Brian is crazy, he just flew over from Switzerland to attend the testing with his actioncam rig. That's real RED love.
Looking forward to your test results.

Thanks for the info Ken, I hope I wasn't sounding critical - it was 4 in the morning when I wrote it and wasn't exactly thinking at that point! Of course if someone has lent LART something that they're not 100% about then the NDA should be in place to cover it. It's just that in my experience NDA's can often slow the delivery of any information and make it harder to discuss certain issues with those involved in an open forum such as this, that was simply my concern. I'm sure Gibby will write up something very thorough and if the other members at LART are able to, will add some valuable insight.
Look forward to reading the results, from the sounds of it, it should be interesting.

Thanks for the update, I'm glad to hear that the Canon Birger will be covered.
It sounds like there will, at least, be a greater variety of footage for RED to show in their booth for trade shows and more .R3D footage and clips in the community is wonderful.

I just want to publicly say thank you to Steve and Ken along with all the other LART members for a fantastic weekend! GibCor put on a fantastic show and brought the idea of this test to life in a big way. Look for the results in the coming weeks on www.vuze.com.
You guys are in for a treat!

Gibby is swamped and working on processing all the LART info, images etc. Thought I'd throw this one out for the RED addicts amongst us :-)
DO NOT ANALYZE RESOLUTION - this is just a photoshop quicky for your enjoyment. The footage is shot in various frame rates with various lenses and cameras. This shot is credited to Mark Mannschreck.

Hey Sharky,
pleasure meeting you at LART, what a blast that was.
Looking forward for the Birger mount to do LART II and get to have some more fun with you guys (and the girls too)
Also trying to organize and process all the raw photo images taken at LART, with the same Canon lenses that we will use to test on the BIRGER mount soon.
I will give a DVD to Gibby and together we will see where and how to post the many many great photos of LART, and again thanks so much to all of you there and to Dave for having all of us at Dave' Garage, what an incredible place and what a car collection that is.
Speaking of girls here are two of the nody girls of LART.

Whew!!!!!!!!!!!
To me, LART was amazing.....
Sorry for the delay in posting. Me and Ken are executive producers for multiple feature and television productions that are currently in production, so I think we're now getting about as much sleep as RED Team members get!
Back to LART:
Sharky really put up a nice beginning summary of the what, where, how, and who of LART. Let me take that a few steps further:
Picture about 30 widely and highly experienced people with some serious skill sets turned loose in a warehouse full of RED cameras, lenses, stabilization units, jibs, editing systems, models, grip, lights, martial artists, food, (uh-did I say models?), world class vintage cars, a big lot to work on, and plenty of time to play with the toys!
Yup, we shot various charts and tested out some lenses. Beyond that though, we then basically had a two day think tank brainstorming scenes to shoot, setting them up, and shooting them - indoors and out, natural light and artificial light, single RED, and multiple REDs. Everyone checked their egos at the door and simply threw their time, talents, and skill sets into the mix.
The visual results? We shot and edited some very cool scenes - quickly graded and edited right on the spot by Lucas on a SCRATCH system, with Mike (VUZE) also cutting some cool scenes in FCP. I can't say I'm surprised by the quality of the footage and edited sequences - I knew we had a super-talented team - but to me, they even surpassed my expectations.
We have a vast amount of high-quality footage to sift through. Yes, everyone who attended signed an NDA, for the purposes that Sharky mentioned. RED let our team play with some new toys, Element shared some of their accessory concept mockups with us, and on and on.
LART was never positioned as a "shoot out" or deep-drilling pragmatic test session, but rather the chance for a bunch of professionals interested in learning more from each other to essentially participate in a hands on workshop and team up to shoot some top-quality scenes - and that's exactly what we did and how the results were.
I want to personally thank everyone who contributed their talents, experience, equipment, and time to the LART sessions - deeply, deeply appreciated.
In the days and weeks ahead we'll post more and more footage, stills, and info from the LART sessions. We'll have a GibCor channel on VUZE, with a special area for H264 files available for viewing. A big thanks to Lucas Wilson of Assimilate for processing the LART footage in SCRATCH, and cutting some cool sequences together.
A huge thanks to Dave Parker of Pelican for opening up his amazing facility and car collection for LART use.
More pics, frames, comments, H264, TIFFs, etc coming in the near future. Please be patient - the team all works busy production schedules in the movie and television industries - we'll hook you up with the goods as fast as we can. LART team members: please give me and Ken a chance to roll out some of the edited scenes we shot and footage samples, before you jump in heavily with commentary on LART.
In closing this post, I also want to let RED User members know that one of the LART team who wanted so much to be there had to cancel just a few days before LART when his doctor diagnosed a serious condition - Andrew Benz. We missed you Andrew....get well.

Coming from Gibby, this says it all.
Simple question ya'll, did Jim show up? Surely his presense, or lack thereof, isn't an NDA issue.
Jim did not make LART - to busy building cameras I'm sure. We were pleased to have Ted there Saturday adding his skills to the mix.

Ketch - I call him the Italian Stallion now. Fantastic photographer to boot. FYI - he means "naughty."
La verdad, no? But let's not digress.

Nope...Jim couldn't stop by because of other matters he was attending to, but Ted Schilowitz hung out with us for several hours on Saturday. I think he originally intended to be there for a few hours, but just really enjoyed the fun stuff we were doing, and decided to hang out all day.
Jarred wanted to stop by on Sunday, but I'm sure he was slammed with work.
LART was a completely independent event, but if they could, we naturally welcomed any RED Team members who could stop by.

That was a great summary, Gibby.
I wanted to just say to everyone at LART that it was so great meeting and working with all of you.
Thanks to Gibby, Sharky and everyone who donated their time, equipment, talent, and dedication.
Also a huge thanks to David Parker and the folk's at Dave's Garage for the use of their location, cars, and personnel.
It was great working along side all of you - can't wait to see the finished results...
and Ketch, I'm very much looking forward to some copies of some certain photos. ;)

Actually you can talk about the Element stuff. Finner or Billy (can't remember which) asked if we needed to keep it quiet and the response was "No please tell other people about it."
(Pending confirmation from Finner or Billy Summers of that being an accurate reproduction of the conversation.)

Yes Matt, Priceless it was and I'm not talking about the photo here.
Sharky, you are the Man, thanks for coming to my resque, this Italian can spell warth of S..., but the photos did made esier to understand, I hope, Muchas Gracias.
And Sharky just so you know, I was only loved by the toooo many ladies at LART only because of my BIG camera, the true lady killer was Gibby, but sorry Gibby I told them all you are Taken and taken by a very SASSY one, so no chance there for them (Gibby, "THE STUD" below).
Casey if you are talking about getting some of the photos of the "HALF NAKED GIRLS" sorry but I delete them all, well not all, I could not find it in my heart to delete some of them (just kidding).
LART was an incredible event in which I was very pleased to have partecipated, I would have loved to make it to Jim's house on Sunday after the last shoot with Manny and the Fire girls, but as I was following Kyle's BMW (it was not the driver) they lost me as they were driving with no consideration of me following with my suv full of gear, long story short after half an hour following a bmw of the same color they stopped and come to my window to tell me why the F.... I was following them, HOOOPS it wasn't Kyle's bmw.
Speaking of Manny and I shooting the fire girls (well Manny) I give him two of my CF cards to record the images and totally did not see that I give him 16GB of LART photos which all went POOOFFF!
Fortunately as Brook said I shot more photos in one day then He did in his entire life, so I have more left, just not as many and as glamorous as the ones lost, "SORRY" ) I have the same excuse, my brain was electricuted several times)
Working on the ones that where saved, will post all with Gibby and Ken soon, for now this are a few compressed teasers.
From left: the impostor Italian Stallion (me with the sensual flat chested and very ugly) Erin Sanders, the true Stallion Steve Gibby and the other bigggg lady's killer, Senor Ken Corben.

When I moved to LA in 1992, I made the brilliant decision to drive to Torrance from Hollywood on Western to avoid the freeways. This was a month after the LA riots. I was going to buy something I saw in the recycler. I left around sunset in my white '76 T-top Corvette. This was when I had long blonde girlie hair like Sebastian Bach (I was in a band). I hit South Central about a half hour later....

I just posted a long review of the rig, but then realized we are still sort of on "lockdown" about the weekend. Gibby, is it OK if I talk purely about the Actioncam...? Those of you who have subscribed to this thread may well have already received a version in your inboxes...!

NDA is specific to RED cameras, data equipment and LART. Anything to promote Assimilate and SCRATCH is cool with GibCor as long as the specific NDA items are not discussed/released regarding RED equipment etc. Nice photo BTW - the caption should read, "SCRATCH - so easy and intuitive even a blonde can do it."

Gibby is swamped but catching up. He authorized complete discussion and disclosure of info and photos of the actioncam and Brian's outstanding work. NOT the equipment under NDA of course which I believe did not work on the Actioncam.

Thanks Ken. I figured as much but didn't want to step on toesies. Thanks again for a fun day.
So here it is:
Brian's rig was a pleasant surprise for me. I had last seen his gear a few years ago and it was unconventional to say the least (his original arm was a definite diversion from the norm) so I had no immediate expectations of his rig. At first glance I saw solid, thoughtful machining going on and while there are a few issues that I noted even before mounting up, Brian was right there in agreement and indicated that they were going to be taken care of, which is always a good sign.
When it comes down to it, the two most important components of any stabilizer are the gimbal and the arm. The gimbal did show a bit of stiction which we discussed, although for the price point Brian is working at this may be to be expected. The arm is impressive, with performance that is much closer to isoelastic than this design of arm would suggest (it takes less force to push all the way down or hold all the way up than much of the competition, barring the big brand names). It also tracks well and feels solid.
The ability to lift components off the RED and place them on the sled (monitor, battery rack etc) is clever, although eventually one would probably want to supplement some of this in case you end up flying a different camera. Certainly a daylight-viewable monitor with greater viewing angle than the RED screen will be required, it's impossible to boom through the range of the arm without the screen "reversing out" and it gets dusted outdoors for the most part. However, for folks looking to get their REDs up and flying with minimal duplication of parts, this is a smart idea. There are lots of ways to configure the masses, so you can make your rig nice-and-fast for action scenes or
The vest is OK--we talked about beefing up the support in the critical lumbar area, that will probably help a lot.
For those unwilling or unable to plunk down the big bucks for a full-on setup (after trying on the Actioncam and heading back to my own rig across the room, I pondered just how many of the former I could buy for the same price as my own investment; certainly enough to get all of the cameras at LART flying, and then some!), this is definitely a good choice. And the red anodizing is pretty cool too!
Shawn Nelson

Thanks Charles!
On the ActionCam, do the cables for the battery and monitor plug into internall wired extensions in the main shaft or do they expect you to buy 3' extensions and do the gangly gaff-tape exercise by taping them down the shaft externally?
Tonaci Tran
12-04-2007, 11:37 PM
They are supposed to go into the main shaft. The long red cables were unavailable so Brian had to use the short lcd cable to make it work at LART. I have some pics of the rig. Will post some soon.

tonaci, the cables I buy go into the shaft, or do they have their own cables wired that I plug into at the top then in return plug into the monitor at the bottom?
It seems they'd wire their own cables into the shaft. Heck, even Glidecam and Varizoom now come with wired shafts.

Hehe, yeah, I thought of the blonde joke right as I posted it. Anyway, she was having a blast with it. So.. SCRATCH: So easy, you'll have a blast... Even if you're blonde.
...Too bad she moved her head right as I took the picture though. I think Ted thought it was funny too. Color should look better on this one, stupid photoshop web output was crushing my colors on my previous photos. Grrr.
I just got back in town tonight. Other than looking through my 65~75 photos or so that I took, I've been making backups of what I brought back with me. I'll start working on processing some of that bluescreen and some other things over the next couple days.

Yes, unfortunately the blonde is not included. Or at least I don't think so, but you might want to double-check that with Lucas. The SCRATCH pre-post system is that 12" black cube on the far end of the table hooked to that Apple 30".

"All cables run into the shaft. It's not wired cables in the shaft, thats only with our zero-g model. The only cable we'll be providing is the power-extension cable. The longer RED lcd and raid cables can be ordered from RED. Depending on your configuration, you might not need any longer cables. If you don't have the RED Raid - then no longer Raid cable needed; if you keep the LCD closer to the camera (like I did at LART) - then no longer LCD cable needed" Brian Goff
For anyone interested in buying one, if there is enough interest, I'll set up a demo for the rig in LA.
Again a HUGE shoutout goes out to Steve and Ken for setting up such an incredible RED experience. Brian rocked the actioncam and I can't wait until the footage is released. It was also awesome meeting Charles Papart the steadicam guru who masterfully did some amazing steadicam work for the LART footage you will soon see.
Fyi, the configuration that you see Brian with is the version for RED where the red cradle and rails are utilized. The one I am rigged up with in the pic utilizes the "zero"g" config that comes with an lcd and vmount cradle. IF you have a RED and basic production pack, you won't need the zero g config We didn't have the red cradle and rails available at that moment, so Brian put on his zero components for counterbalance.
I'll post more thoughts on the actioncam later.

Brian installing the redcradle and rods to the bottom of the actioncam.

I'm rocking the "Zero-G" configuration. No long lcd cable, so the monitor and battery at the bottom served for counterbalancing purposes only.

Just like to thank a couple people real quick like. (right.....)
Ken Corbin for asking me to get involved and help "wrangle" and conceptualize stuff in the beginning, What was that, August?
Dayna Nichols for putting me in touch with Joe Raley of DAVES GARAGE.
Joe Raley for letting me know "yeah we've got a few cars..." and inviting us down to see the facility and being keen on the idea and presenting the concept to Mr. Parker.
Jim & Heather Hays for meeting up w/Joe to discuss the concept of L.A.R.T. and establishing the rapport and communicating the goal of what we were looking to do. And for hosting a wrap party at their place.
Glad to have seen it finally (Go Live) and working with & meeting all of you was an absolute blast...
Safe to say, that EVERYONE involved was KNOCKING EM' CLEAN OUT OF THE BALL PARK ALL DAY. ALL NIGHT. ALL WEEKEND.
IMRESSIVE in front of and behind the camera.
I've got more than a few models who've all sent me messages telling me what a Fantastic time they had, even though now they're sick and have lost their voices, etc from braving the elements, with the bravada they had to have to wear Ximena Valero's outfits...

We were lost. got phone directions and Bram put the hammer down, grabbing intersections like only he could.:poster_oops: the directions were mad easy, and on a paper plate on the bar. i didn't write them down either, thought someone else in the car had em already...
How'd you end up getting your car started after your battery died??? That must have been frustrating.
Ximena, thanks for bringing your understated "Make Love & Red Carpet Collections by" ; ) I'm glad we finally had an opportunity to do something creative together!! and Lacey Raley, THANK YOU for taking the lead with Make Up. I love the idea of being able to use the RED cradle and RED lcd on the actioncam. It helps keep the cost of working rig down. It's modular so you can always add more options later.
I will be taking more detailed shots of the actioncam shortly. I think Brian is on to something here. At the price for the red configuration, it may open more doors to future "steadicam" operators who can't afford a 30,000+rig.

LART was a group of industry pros getting together to have fun with the RED camera. It was/is under NDA so Sharkguy and Gibby (GibCor) can release details when and how they choose.
Some tests were done... But more than specific tests, LART was an opportunity for many to come together and just use the camera in a variety of situations to see how it handled and what the best approach is from powering on the camera all the way through post. I can't speak for everyone else who was there, but I learned a lot about RED... A lot of things that aren't discussed on the forums much, if at all. It was nice to work with the cameras and see some of the existing issues first-hand. Stuff like the "sensor protect flares". Many of these issues are probably going to be non-issues with the replacement cameras. LART was also a chance to see how RED footage held up in real-world scenarios, so far it's doing very well with FX workflow testing I'm doing on it. I'm building a composite clip with bluescreen footage shot at LART and CG elements. I'm not quite half-way done yet, I've only been able to devote about an hour or so each night to working on it.

Yeah we had that happen the other day on a RED shoot. It seems that we could have a bit of the sun in frame but if we caught the center or brightest part of the sun, the sensor safety kicked in and left us with a black line through the frame.:ranting2:

This "dark vertical line with bright light at edge of frame" problem was discussed in the "issues" thread last week. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6346&page=28
On 12/6, Jarred said this problem has been fixed, but not yet released. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=117949&postcount=279

didn't realize i could post more than 3 photos at a time...
i have 4K Tiff's of all these for everyone that's interested... look much, much better than these highly compressed jpeg's and the color space looks better.
