For our type of work - mainly the high end corporate and commercial business, you need to be able to watch and judge the shots on set in at least HDSDI 1080 422 quality. Our clients expect and want to offline themselves. So that means that we must be able to make dailies as well.
On base of the offline we must be able to autoconform the footage and to do all other necassary steps like grading compositing.

By my knowledge the only way to achieve a smooth workflow as I described above is by using a scratch pre-post system. The initial investment in Euro's for a RED Camera and a Scratch pre-post sytem is about € 70.000.
Compare to a Viper in combination with a HDCAM SR a bargain approx.
€ 175.000.
But € 70.000 is still quite a bit more then we expected when we ordered our RED#1089 camera. But perhaps we missed something?

I'd say you go even higher if you want a nice set of primes. You are definitely wise to see there's a major investment required to properly use Red.
