So we have a 4K file.... cineon out.... can we possibly record an Imax aspect ratio?

Imax is 4:3, and RED is 16:9.

So I guess yes.....
We are planning on it.

15p 70mm would work nicely :)

Shoot 16:9, reframe to 4:3 in REDCINE, output, laser.

Seems reasonable. You wouldn't have the detail, FOV and DOF characteristics of 70mm... but you'd still have a humongous positive!

There's no 65mm laser recorder as far as I know

So it is impossible to record the entire chip to an outboard raid?

You can record the full 4520x2540 to an outboard RAID.

Graeme when we are looking in the viewfinder I understood we will be seeing a larger area than the usual 4K recorded area the so called "look around" area which is of course similiar to what we see in an optical viewfinder? I was thinking that if this area can also be recorded we would see more nearly 3/4 than 1.77 to 1??

Yes do see that. You can record this area through the RAW port (4.5K or 4520 x 2540)

Thanks ROB

Looks like bottom line the sensor is 177:1 overall I guess this means it Mysterium is Canon etc. then part is masked off or you have gone to mystery land and had a special sensor made from scratch that is this aspect ratio.

So I could record the entire sensor (4.5K) and clip it to 4/3 just by shooting to the 3by4 guides in the viewfinder. I'd get about 2540 by 3330? pixels. not bad but probably not as good as 35mm blowup to imax. Now the film scanner problem thanks for bringing that up Thomas......

We went to mystery land and had a special sensor made from scractch that's 16:9. That's why it's named Mysterium. It's actually 4900x2580 pixels, but only 4520x2540 are used for image data.

Starwars was recorded at 1080. I would assume 2540 would be sufficient.

EFILM in Hollywood did our HDCAM to 15perf 70mm film out tests - not sure about the vodoo involved, i.e., laser recorder but the results were awesome.

Maybe if someone who knows them sent them a windowed to 3/4 version of one of the RED frames made so far, we could get their opinion on whether or not this will make an acceptable IMAX image?......eh shark guy eh?????

If HDCAM was acceptable then RED should be good to go??

Graeme Nattress

More than good, I'd think! Also, you'd not loose too much if you put the RED image full across the 4:3 and letterbox. That'd look super IMHO.

I have to say that my "innovation" of taking HDCAM to 15perf 70mm, made possible by my nameless mentors, was a eye opening experience in the late 90's.

First, made all the trades (thought that was cool), directed and screened a
short film on the really big screen for Sony Execs, Hollywood execs and others. We even shot underwater digitally in 3-D. All in a big chunk of change.

The result: bigger players than I swooped it up and made it their own.

So this time around, me, my red camera and large format knowledge/contacts are for hire. I already know how to shoot, edit and produce digital large format and RED just made my results a quantum level better.

BTW - love the letter box idea for dramatic segments of a film, however, I think the big screen theater owners would have kittens if their entire 80' screens aren't utilized.
