Can you guys remind me what plugs the Red has for ENG lenses? I'm about to buy a Fujinon 13x4.5 BERM and want to make sure I get the right ones. Thanks!

Peter,
The original B4 lens connector was dropped from the Red design and instead the production cameras have a 10 pin lemo connector. You will need an adapter cable to go from this to your Fujinon.

I have the Fujinon 13x4.5 and 22x7.3 HD zooms, and a prototype RED B4 adaptor. I've shot quite a bit with them on RED #8 in the past few months - with good results. I've been shooting in full manual, non-power mode.
The RS232 bus on the right side of RED can power B4 2/3" lenses. A custom cable, not made yet by anyone, is needed in order to get full lens power and functionality.
I have communicated with Fujinon and they have supplied me with the advice and pinout for their end of the lens cable. A hirose connector is necessary to adapt the Fujinon multi-pin cable to RED. On the RED end of the cable, special LEMO connectors are necessary. Care must be used in making sure the cable maker follows the pinout diagrams for RED and Fujinon in making the cable.
I have two of these cables currently being made. When they're finished, I'll test them out with the 13x4.5 and 22x7.3 zooms. I will then be able to start/stop, record, and power zoom all on the servo zoom hand grip on the side of the lens - thus enabling true EFP functionality.

Gibby,
Thanks so much for the thorough feedback. So when I'm ordering this lens, should I not order any cables (for power) as they will not work on the Red? It would be nice to have servo zoom, but it sounds like this might not be possible without a custom made connector. Thanks as always!

I ll be more than happy to know who can make this cable/adaptor,
would you share this precious information ?
Would you know where I could find somebody to make a cable /adapter to fit my 6x8 Canon ?
Thank you

I take it from this quote that I would not simply be able to plug in the 12-pin cable from the Fujinon into the 10-pin on the Red in order to get Servo Power? Is there any way to get Servo Power without this custom cable (which I'm anxious to buy once it becomes available!). Thanks,
Peter

That's correct. We use a LEMO connector for enhanced reliability, and to match the other uses of this port that already used LEMO. So you will need a LEMO to Hirose adaptor. We are building up sample quantities for field tests (lab tests have been successful)

Peter, I hope these photos help you understand the cable that you need. PM Pana-Tech and he should be able to advise a cost on the cable required.
In theory you should be able to control your lens servo and hit record from the lens VTR start button using the adapter cable.

Hey Gibby,
When you have a moment do you think you could post the pin out info you received from Fujinon for the custom cable? This would be a huge help to those of us looking to get one made. Thank you!

Yes, but you may find it more convinient to use GPI/O 4-pin lemo connector instead.

Resolution though... How good do these 2/3 lenses look in 3K? They give you a 3K window right? And vignette around? Do they resolve 3K well? Do they stay reasonably vignette-free up to 3K? Sorry for my ENG lens noobness...

B4 lenses won't cover 3k on a Red 1 or S35 model except maybe at longer focal lengths. Covers the 2/3" Scarlet 3k just fine. Covers 2k on S35 models.

Do not forget, B4 HD lenses will not resolve at 3K, they are engineered for 1080p-maybe 2K.

Says who? Some of the most advanced optics in the world today are the ones made for B4 mount. In fact some out resolve those made for larger sensors. Anyone with a lens projector can tell you that this is true.
Would anyone out there be interested in a simple optical adapter that allows any B4 mount lens to perfectly cover 3K throughout its focal range? An optical adapter made of high quality glass and expressly designed for this purpose? We have something on the horizon. Come visit Abel at NAB.
And we make the adaptor cable to plug the lens into the camera as well.

Abel makes these cables and has done so for several years. We prefer to use one of the Lemo4 connectors on the rear of the camera as the front port does not deliver enough power for some lenses. This setup has never failed for any of our clients.
We also now offer the HDx2, which is an optical B4/PL adapter that allows these lenses to cover 3K, not just 2K.

My post from page 1 of this thread, which Rob quoted, was posted by me way back on December 6, 2007. At the time I was communicating directly with Fujinon and Red for the pin patterns and Lemo requirements. Neither of them mentioned Abel already making such a cable exactly for those needs on Red One - and as I remember Abel didn't make that exact cable for Red one at that point in time - 12/6/07.
My initial experimentation with the cables on the side 12v auxiliary bus, later gave way to connecting it to the 12v bus on the rear of the camera - which as you rightly mentioned, is more reliable.
I was the first non-Red Team person to use B4 2/3" HD EFP/ENG zooms on Red One, first using them on one of my Red One cameras way back in early September 2007 - at that time using the lenses without power to the servozoom unit. It was in December 2007 when the hirose to Lemo cable situation was solved, and I shot with full powered zoom capability.

Steve, I know you've always been the innovator on these such things. I just wanted everyone to know there was a solution at hand if they were interested. The HDx2 really improves the utility of using B4 lenses on the RED, since at 3K you can shoot 60p. Otherwise one needs a Sony SRW9000/F23/F35 or a Phantom to do that.

Mitch what is the cost of the HDx2? I assume it will work for epic and scarlet, but seeing as how the mounts remove from those cameras pretty easy, I guess it would just be better to wait for a B4 mount make for the camera.
This is a great solution for the RED ONE though...
