The code to drive original EVF's are in EPIC... but it only works with specific versions of the EVF firmware. The original EVF firmware was not user upgradable, so owners of those existing EVF's that do not work will need to send the EVF's in for an upgrade when that firmware is complete, which it is not yet. Firmware is variable from EVF to EVF as components change, so we are still working on a firmware that will hopefully work with them all. No promises yet.
Good to know! Thanks for the 411

This really put a big smile on my face. As somebody who has followed Red from as far back as Mike Curtis' original report on this wundercam from some fly by night operation, who patiently waited and saved until I could afford a Red One, who has had to face ridicule from the naysayers right along with the Red team...I am proud of this moment for Red and the Reduser community. Red stuck with it and with us, and we stuck with them. I am looking forward to purchasing an Epic in the coming year and continuing the wild ride that is being a Reduser.
Thanks to all the guys from Red that spend the time to communicate here and also to all the Red employees whose names we haven't come to know. I don't know exactly how many people Jim employs at Red, but the nameless rest of ya deserve a big round of applause and hopefully for some, a well deserved break. I'm guessing based on Jim's recent comments about all the announcements and surprises that September holds...those breaks will be very short ;)

Okay just crossed my mind. That top plate. It has S35 on the top of it - which is really cool and obviously the sensor in the camera.
So does that mean when the sensor changes *cough RED Dragon, that RED will change the top plate to the designation of the sensor e.g. FF35???
Just a thought *cough

No one ever said anything about RED Dragon being FF35...
True that. An upgraded S35 sensor with better colorimetry and latitude (to match Monsto generation) always seemed like a smart thing to do as well...?
Although I want a FF35 stereo rig with Red Electronic lenses... I begrudgingly accept that the rest of the moviemaking world might still want to make films with all of those S35 lenses they have... after all, that frame size did seem to work for a couple of films :)

No way you are marking an EPIC-X with both EPIC-X on the front and then also printing EPIC-S35 on top. That's an EPIC-S35, formerly EPIC-S, formerly Scarlet-S35. Sweet. The supply chain problems gave you time to deliver them at the roughly same time, then?

No way you are marking an EPIC-X with both EPIC-X on the front and then also printing EPIC-S35 on top.
Epic-X has ALWAYS been an Epic-S35. This goes all the way back to 2008:
http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/red_scarlet_epic_new_specs.jpg
The Epic-M is also an Epic-S35; it's an EPIC with a S-35 sensor. The cameras are virtually identical; you can tell the difference between the two by the engraving on the front:
http://offhollywood.squarespace.com/storage/reduser/IMG_5108.jpg
The designation on top tells you what sensor it is. As the sensor options change, I'm sure that marking will too.
No one ever said anything about RED Dragon being FF35...
To be fair, no one ever said anything about RED Dragon being anything. Everything related to Dragon is pure speculation at this point.

I was only saying that it looks like the top plate could be replaced with a new one, with a new designation *cough whenever / if ever a new sensor goes into the brain. Like when a RED Dragon chip goes in it - whatever that maybe - the only thing we know is a sensor called RED Dragon, although I suspect if we gang up on Jarred, we might get a hee...hee...hee

Well, that information will not reveal any inside-technological secret, but can help us to gauge when, people from Stage 3, can potentially be receiving our cameras, so we can provide accurate quotes to the clients if Red One has been returned ( for trade-in purpose) to get our Epics. The price will be SIGNIFICANTLY higher. So that information is a very important one for them to have, so they can be ready for such figure.

I get that, but Jim and Jarred have said repeatedly that there will be enough advance information for people in Stage 3 to make their decisions, pay their deposits, and beat the price increase.

Tom, with all respect, your entire statement couldn't be farther from the truth. Estimating Stage 2's would not be a too difficult an exercise - I would bet experienced folks could be within a 5% margin of error.
Secondly, for our firm and many others, it "is our business" - from a client-, rental house-, private/corporate owner-, and investment perspective - the supply of a valuable tool, and its subsequent demand is the basis of our profitability.

I guess my question was misunderstood. I was just asking if anyone had a rough idea. There was a list going a while ago. I wasn't asking Jim , Jarred or anyone at RED. I know what has been said and I respect how incredibly busy everyone at RED must be right now.

Add together the informal Stage 2 and Stage 3 lists and you get almost exactly 500 cameras; add the 1,000 Epic-Ms out there for a total known (or expected) Epic demand of 1,500. With perhaps 9,000 Red Ones out there, do you think it's reasonable to assume that only 16% are adding Epic, upgrading to Epic or buying into a RED camera for the first time? Doubtful. What's certain is that NO ONE knows the exact demand for the X, not even RED, because Stage 3 has not yet even been formalized. No one has officially committed to it yet, let alone all those who may or may not follow after. It should also be clear, however, that the demand for the Epic is not in the hundreds, but in the thousands for now and eventually in the ten of thousands.

Jack, I totally understand why you (and everyone else) wants to know what the number is. I do too...I am not just some ivory tower academic...I am a future Epic owner, and it will be bought with my own $$$, for my own projects, and will have to generate income and ROI. And I agree, that we can probably make a pretty good educated guess. But the real-world sales totals fall into RED's proprietary business information. and I doubt you'll see anyone from RED willing to share that information.

We'll be able to judge that anyway when Stage 2 people start confirming their deliveries, R1 serials, and order dates.
And as Tom said, it's mostly a matter of curiosity now; RED will take care of us.

My guess is that those pins may be for future flash systems. I think I remember in the early Epic specs that the Epic would allow for some kind of flash syncing, but that was a long time ago. If Epic wants to be a true photo/moving image camera it should have some kind of flash system. Also the placing is pretty much where is should be.
But all of this is pure speculation. :-)

In anticipation of our "soon to be shipped" cameras, it's great to reflect upon what it's taken for RED to get through the R&D process and to defeat all odds when it came to engineering such a camera.
Fun Fact (One of many): The 3.9lb RED EPIC can process up to 1,579,008,000 RAW pixels every second.
The 13.8lb Arri Alexa tops at 124,416,000 "ProRes" pixels. I'm told that with another $50,000 box (give or take a few), you can record up to 186,624,000 RAW pixels every second.
---
This means that the EPIC records 12.69 times the data an out-of-box Alexa shoots. Still, 8.46 times the data with another $50,000+ to help the Alexa.
Kudos to RED for the patience to go "all out" for these technical advances...in spite of what very well could have been popular opinion to just ship it AS IS back in December '10.
EDIT: Thanks Philip for running the numbers with me... :)

On-board lossless or compressed RAW recording is the only way to with.

Yes - certainly Van and we don't mind waiting - and it will be great to finally have 2 cams to fight (less, we hope :-) ) over to make schedules work for all of us rather than just one. I find it odd how people don't see the value of having two cams - not just scheduling, but 2 cam shoots are not exactly unheard of and Red MX and an Epic are very easy to match

As my excitement grows I'm wondering how many X's are going out the door? I'm trying to figure out when to get my money in and not have to wait to get my X out. Any idea how many are being pushed out the door per week? I know they will be ramping up as we go.
EDIT: Just saw the X006 and X007 to Off Hollywood. that's 3 so far that I know of. I'm sure Gibby has his X008 too, or will soon!

So the production seems slow so far, how fast can that ramp up to? Is that dependent on alot of the testing and experiences that will come from the Epic X? Is this the only production line at RED? Can they run multiple lines producing more than one camera at a time? Yes I'm aware they're focused on the X at this point. I'm just curious as they're looking at producing 4 more cameras still.
Tim Whitcomb
09-06-2011, 03:03 PM
Its the first day back from a Holiday... lets give em a day or two to catch their breath... and Jim clearly stated production would RAMP UP at some point after the first few batches made it. No need to rush a precision instrument.
Remember too jarred mentioned a thorough and time consuming QC check AFTER production... (please take all the time you need RED )
I also don't think they are going purely by Serial #, but by delivery dates according to Brent.
Speculation drives everybody nuts... they will ship when they ship... its not like RED is sitting there saying... "hehe, lets delay these a little more just to piss people off" - they want them out the door faster than we want them in our door. trust me on that one

09-06-2011, 03:11 PM
So they started the 29th and so far there are 7 out the door or it appears to this point? That seems very slow.
Boy, people here just won't take yes for an answer. If you offered some of them 10 free cameras, $5000 cash, and a $20 gift card for In-N-Out, they'd probably complain that there's no In-N-Out in Colorado.
Michael Olsen
09-06-2011, 03:15 PM
I don't expect we'll receive a "We just shipped Number ___" post every time they ship a camera. And I know we won't get a "We just received Number ___" post every time someone receives a camera.
RED is moving as best they see fit - if they've slowed down, there's a reason for it.
All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.

Did you read my whole post? I'll go edit it and make certain areas bold. I said I'm sure they'll ramp up as time goes on. I am not complaining. I'm not even getting an Epic X at this point. I know they work tirelessly, I know they're crushing it over there, I know they probably worked on the holiday. I know QC is important.
I hate this about boards, people take one post and read one sentence and miss the main point because of one thing they disagree with. I guess the main thing I want to know is how much are they going to ramp up? There are tons of Epics to get out and 4 other cameras on the pipeline as well. I was more or less asking what there capacity and output can be. Maybe from Jim, Jarred or another Red employee, or someone that works with them alot could supply that answer rather than a needless post making me appear selfish or something? I didn't totally understand your post to begin with. I was merely trying to figure out the output they could handle based on Red One's and Epic M's. I know alot of what Epic X can accomplish will answer this. Forgive me let me edit my post to not share my thoughts and merely my question.

So they started the 29th and so far there are 7 out the door or it appears to this point? That seems very slow. Although some may have not updated the status. I'm sure they'll ramp up but I've read some stuff about other companies ability to output and the numbers, and this is a big reason why it may be hard for RED to release products. They were all clearly speculating as nearly anyone is anymore in reference to RED but maybe Jim or Jarred can chime in. Can the output of cameras be increased to meet the demand in a reasonable time? Possibly on more than one camera at a time? I'm sure they can they've conquered everything in front of them at this point. I'm just curious as to this because they have 4 cameras on the roadmap essentially. Maybe that's changed and we don't know but if these are the starting speeds are they going to beable to meet the demand of 2-3 cameras at a time? Epic X, S, Scarlet, Scarlet Interchangeable? It just seems very slow at this point. Just based on the lists it seems like it'll take a year for Epic X alone at the current speed, not taking into account other camera production...
Jim already stated that the first week of Epic-X would be slow (Ferrari assembly line), ramping to full capacity (Ford assembly line). We were shown a photo of 28 cameras being tested last week; presumably those (and maybe more) are in-transit this week, while a larger batch of cameras gets tested this week. How high the production line's capacity goes, and how quickly, are open questions. We should not expect Red to explicitly answer, due to the need to protect information from competitors. Based on the previous timelines posted, there is every reason to expect that Red will meet Epic demand in months not years. With over 1000 hand-assembled Epic-M's shipped, there is no doubt in my mind that Epic-X production will scale to very rapidly eclipse that number.

You can always buy a side handle to go along with your X.. Your Epic will look so much better with a side handle when it is in that case :)
About backordered items. We are putting priority on the package items. The REDMOTE will be back on track in a few weeks, and we should be completely out of backorder on them the end of September.
I still hear a few M owners talking about REDVOLT and Travel Charger delivery issues that they have not received them yet. This is a bit maddening to me, so I personally am going to take care of this with Brent's help so it doesn't fall through the cracks... email me at Jarred @ red.com if you have not received your package M REDVOLTS and Charger yet... there is no excuse for you not to have them.

Quick update. If you ordered a travel charger - in a package or alone - before early Sep, you should have received an email from your rep in the last few days saying it has been allocated to you. We even blasted everyone a second time if you had not replied yet to the first email. So, if you have not gotten that email and you ordered before Sep, please PM me and include your email address. Check your inbox first! Check your Junk folder first!
The past few days of Sep should be blasted on Mon to get us all caught up. Note, we put a lot of emails out there the past few days on chargers. So, I apologize in advance for slightly longer response and order processing times. The BOMB SQUAD will be working their butts off to get through your replies as soon as they can. We want you to get you them as badly as you want them.

For ET's Hybrid you need a 12mm riser shim to keep the same rods to lens centre distance. ET do one but if you are in Europe, Ronford Baker does one at only £75 and much less shipping than from US. That's what I've got.

Stage-2 is the deal of the century. But for those looking at buying at EPIC-X at full price (Stage-4), the price difference between M and X is negligible. Essentially there's about a $4K premium for an M vs. the X, based on next year's retail pricing. For those who need a camera now, it makes a lot of sense to pay the bit of premium to have it now.

I think it's exactly $5K, for anyone that cares. Jarred also did say they'd sell them "until they ran out," though what that means exactly is anyone's guess. For all intents and purposes, they're the same... M just gets you in the door NOW if that's what you need.

Weird to be the pioneer of an entire country sometimes, especially when I see the way I set up my Red business being mimicked by everyone else (things like Red package deals where the entire industry here used to do a la carte on high end cameras etc).
Congrats on your Epic-M by the way Joseph!
Cheers from Tokyo,
Paul :)

Now THAT is impressive packing, I need to show this thing to my wife!
(I remember watching this the first time and thinking: "There is NO WAY they will let him on a plae with all this stuff!!") Obviously they did...

The stages are clear, they are working on stage 2. When it's finished they will start 3, then they will start 3.5, then 4.
No point asking how quickly each stage will go, no one exactly knows.
What you can be sure of is we'll know a lot more by Nov. 3 as many more Epics will go out and we'll have a better sense of the pace.

Well, this last trip back to Italy form the US was not an easy one, but I was also carrying some serious luggage with me, so had to do lots os smooth talk, and at declaration I was fine only because I was with a special reentry situation after been in the US for 22 years.
Normally you are only allowed ONE Photo-camera bag, no specified dimensions no weight limit specified either, but I always have at list TWO, again smooth talk and kindness always does the trick... ;)
No papers.
Hi Ketch,
I was wondering what bags/packs you are using for your carry-ons?
The Backpack is a Lowe-Pro Tracker II, they don't make it any more, its the one with the 17" Lap top receptacle, the other ,and several others I have are Think Thank, most of them Airpot International V2 models, great bags.

Pretty unlikely Red will comment on shipping status. This is the informal list we've been following, but since we have no way of knowing when each camera was invoiced/shipped, it's a very loose guide. Rather than serial number, you need to watch the dates people received their Red One. They are up to about March 2008 at the moment, and we're seeing serial numbers as high as 1300.

Paul,
What, if anything, special did you do to warrant such quick shipping?
I have Red One #344, which shipped January 2008.
I replied to my Epic-X email within one hour of receiving it on September 14th.
I had accessories and credit card info to my rep by the end of the day (I was working) and all the specific credit card authorization details to them by 9/15.
Yesterday I was looking for an update and my rep told me that they were quite busy, and there was "processing time". There was no other detailed info.
I know it's not like going to Dunkin Donuts and choosing 2 glazed and three plain, but sheesh... 12 days after getting my order and credit card info...
Cheers,
Harry

Hi Harry,
given your Red One shipping date and order info, here's where I differed - I had prepaid around $15,000 to Red as soon as they announced the start of the Epic-X program. I then ordered some additional parts and paid via credit card (same one I used on prior orders, don't know if that made any difference). Then I waited for my camera to get allocated and let my bomb squad rep know the money was already there. It's just my speculation but I think the disparity in shipping is down to the prepaid part.
Hope that helps a bit. Fingers crossed you get yours soon!
Cheers from Tokyo,
Paul :)

Red should have received my Cashiers Check yesterday or today.
So I have the required amount plus $4-$5K extra in my account for the nano-second my camera gets out of the oven!! Of course I certainly hope I can come into the Studio and pick it up in person. A drive to LA from Sacramento is certainly worthwhile for such an Epic moment (sorry, I am allowed a pun a week, and I had to use it here :)

The Lowe-Pro Computrekker Plus AW from the looks and sounds of it is pretty much the same as the Tracker II I believe. Very comfortable backpack for extended hiking. Also have the Think Tank Airport Addicted v2.0 which holds a huge amount very well, but doesn't have wheels (adds weight and reduces capacity), and strap system is only good for short distances.

It was a snowboarding comp that was held up at Bear Mtn. I shot the same comp a couple years ago on my RED One, so I thought it would be a good idea to bring Epic up there. But yes I will be posting what I got up there in the footage section. Epic worked great out there and having the ability to shut down and power back up in less than 10 seconds saved power. I was out there all day and only went through one and a half RED bricks.

What I mean by that is 3000$ is nothing when you count all the costs involved if you can the EPIC now. You can wait that EPIC goes to RED store and save 3000$, but that can take another 6 months or even more, or less. We don't know.

+ 1 extra years warranty. Quite useful and probably sensible for a camera which is still having its kinks ironed out......

Christ... Jarred, I don't want to look mean, but hasn't it been officially announced from the very start that the old evf would be epic compatible ? I remember that the old hard drive was initially announced to be compatible as well... however understandable the "non spinning thing" move was, whatever fair deal was handed out by Red on that matter, it still makes a difference to small budgets. I know, everything changes... Compatibility with red one accessories was a serious issue for some of us, I guess !

RED - his is a no-brainer. The original EVF is a great piece of hardware. A bit large but still great. RED needs to support the early adopters who helped get them where they are. We invested in the RED ONE. We invested in the EPIC. Now all we want is a little customer service.
