I hope its something we can install ourselves for those of us who already own a mac pro. I would hate to have to configure a new one for the option.

True Crossfire/SLI support will not work in the current Mac Pro systems. There is only one x16 PCI-E slot, the rest are all 4-lane.
As for this rumor, I'm expecting to see this at NAB... It's been hinted about at various developer events and there's sufficeint evidence within some of the Leopard betas to suggest its imminent. The Inquirer is only right 60% of the time on such articles as this, but I think this time they're probably right.
