I have the RED 300mm and purchased a set of B+W filters to insert in the front tray and they do not fit.
(B+W 43mm NEUTRAL DENSITY #103 ND0.9 FILTER - BW10343)

They are slightly too thick. Does anyone have a filter that fits? What brand?

Greg,

I believe Gtbby has been using different filters in the 300mm RED lens.

I'd like to know. I have the 300mm but haven't yet purchased 43mm rounds. That's good to know about the B+W though.

I think if I remember right gibby has tiffen ones. Don't quote me on that though. I think Steve is in Hawaii right now shooting surfing but PM him or e-mail him as he gets back fairly quick.

Wow, thanks for this information! I was on the verge of buying a set of B+W filters.

Maybe RED can tell us what lenses would fit? They must have tested it after all. Jarred? Anyone?

I have a 600mm Canon with a tiffen inside. I've used all manor of long guns and they have all been stuffed with tiffens. B+W has always had deep filter rings.

The only 43 mm Tiffen ND filter I found is an ND.6. But we also need higher grades I suppose.

Hoya makes .3 .6 and .9 NDs in 43mm round. I don't know if they work with the RED 300mm or not. B&H sells them, but doesn't have them in stock.

I know Pentax makes a 43mm drop in filter Polirezer, not sure of any other filters.

Just cut a peice of ND (gel) and Gaff it on the front of the lens.

that's the best way to do it, if you care about image quality at all...

^^^ insert sarcasm filter.

The drop in filter is designed into the optical path of most long tele's and HAS to be there in order for it to focus properly.

Morning Mike,

Yep this is true of most rear filters (not all though). It depends on where in the optical path it falls. If it is after the whole optical assembly it will "optically" increase the back focus appx. one third the thickness of the filter. Thereby preventing the lens from reaching infinity focus. This of course is very critical with wider angle lenses where even the shift of appx. .0015" created by using a gelatin filter would throw everything off on the footage scale and keep the lens from focusing at infinity. Some longer lenses focus past infinity thereby letting you still achieve sharp focus, although your footage scale is still slightly off but is not a real problem with a 300mm lens. As I say it depends where in the optical path the dropin filter is located. An example of a lens where it was not very critical at all was the old Kinoptik 9.8mm lens for 35mm cine cameras. Even though this was an extremly wide angle lens for it's day, due to the location of the 2" square dropin glass filter the focus shift was very minor. But I still use to collimate them with a clear filter I kept in my tool box just for that purpose.

The RED 300mm comes with a clear filter in place.

Chuck speaks the truth!

My comment mostly applied the the 300 because it has a hard mounted focus scale, that I'm sure people want to be accurate. In order to maintain accuracy they should pick filters in similar thickness to the clear it was calibrated with. That being said, most often with a 300 it's eye focus, and up to the operator.

I just got a Canon 600 4.5 from Otto for a steal. It has some custom made follow focus knobs, and no real markings. Which is actually superb for that kind of lens since so much can change about how that lens performs due to temperature. I did notice a slight shift when I removed the clear filter, but nothing substantial. I could easily pas infinity focus. Since the lens has no markings to begin with it doesn't matter a great deal.

Apologies if this has been covered in another thread, but is a standard 4x5.65 ARRI mattbox big enough to work with the RED 300mm?

If not, what's the mm for the screw mount on the outward face of the lens (not the 43mm drop in on the cam side)?

Actually they do fit; once you screw them in place, back it off a half a turn and then they fit.

I don't know about the arri box but my vocas 450 covers it nicely.
