So...
A friend of mine has an Epic-M coming, and I've been helping her work out the mounting/rigging accessories needed, and frankly, it has been incredibly confusing.
We've been looking at Element Technica, Brook Willard/Viewfactor, Wooden Camera, Action Products, and of course, RED. Frankly, we're utterly confused. Everyone has beautiful pictures of products but few have a detailed description of what it does or doesn't do.
What we're looking for is the ability to mount 15mm lightweight permanently to the front of the camera, which seems easy enough, since everyone seems to have a solution for this one way or another. But we also require the ability to mount the camera onto 19mm rods with the correct lens-rod spacing, and this is where we're lost.... Can someone please provide some guidance on this? Some of our questions are:
Does RED's quick release system provide the correct spacing for both LW15mm and 19mm?
Do I need a bottom plate like Brook Willard's or Wooden Camera's to get correct spacing?
If I want to use Brook's plate because it gives me extra 1/4" holes, can I no longer use RED's system?
If I use Brook's plate, whose base/bridge plate would I use to go on 19mm?
I really appreciate RED and everyone else for designing a modular camera and accessories that can be built to suit the job. I really do. The flexibility provided is enormous, but to be completely honest, it's also very confusing. We've dug around REDuser, and visiting threads like "EPIC OUTFITTING" makes me feel even more confused with all the configs I've seen. There really ought to be a "standard issue - this is what 80% of you need" configuration published if not pre-packaged in the RED store. Kind of like the old Base Production Pack. It would go a long way toward reducing the confusion factor on some of this.
