View Full Version : Another workflow question
09-29-2011, 08:41 AM
MacOS 10.8.6, 32GB RAM, Blackmagic Decklink Extreme 3D, Sonnet 16TB external drive, FCP 7.0.3, Resolve 8.01
I shoot on RED (4K, 16:9) 25fps
Could someone kindly tell me the best workflow for final delivery on PAL DV and DVD? (That is all that is accepted for broadcast where I am).
I want to stay HD as much as possible. What are the settings to use in Resolve (1080i? 1080p? 1080i25, 720P50?) , FCP and Decklink?
Thanks for reading.

I'm sorry, I haven't used OS X 10.8 yet.
The last version I used was OS 10.7 Lion
I am eager for details on this new OS update, such as when you got yours from the future?
Sorry to give you a hard time, but it's revenge because I got excited that 10.8 was available somewhere before I realized it had to be a typo for Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Your workflow is easy ... stay with 25p, render an "internal deliverable" at 1080/25p from Resolve in target mode, then use that as a source to render a PAL 50i version. Compressor gives great results on progressive to interlace conversions ... and you don't have to fiddle the settings much at all.
The Adobe Production Premium suite generates better results in my opinion though ... mostly because you can be online all the time with .r3d material in Premiere CS 5.5 and Resolve 8. Encoding with Adobe Media Encoder is very fast ... much faster than Compressor. I dislike the paucity of options in Adobe Media Encoder though. So far it hasn't been an issue, but I'm also hanging on to Compressor.
If you really like FCP, then you may want to look into the latest Compressor at least. I think it plays with FCP 7 still, and it may give you a speed up. I haven't tried it, so do your homework.

ooops it's 10.6.8... my bad.
Thanks for the input though. Will try out your suggestions.
