View Full Version : Cold Update...

Our engineers have figured out how to dramatically improve cold weather performance. We are now booting successfully at -20C in the lab. This improvement requires a slight board modification, so all cameras will be delayed about a week to push this through production.
The good news is the community brought it to our attention, we found it, and are fixing it time before we ship all cameras out the door.
Happy Holidays...

You shouldn't have mentioned a delay. That implied people knew when it was coming in the first place. ;) A week from whenever it's done is still whenever it's done.

Jim: Thanks, but year end has substantial tax impact for a lot of us. At least $4000 in tax savings for me, not to mention I have a $4500 rental for January 10th that will go away if I can't commit soon.
I'm sure that most of the other 200 would see a $4K to $8K savings as well.
200 cameras at say $5K each would be a million dollars in tax savings to the early res holders.

Great news
1 big question. Is -20c the coldest you were able to get the lab down to to test or was colder then -20c the failing point of a cold camera booting?
I do not mean for this to sound negative because -20c is very good news it is just very valuable information to know the approx limit of a cold boot.

Great news...but how did you get the lab to -20?
They probably have an environmental test chamber like this one:
http://www.cszindustrial.com/products/tempchambers/ctseries.htm
These are pretty common in the aerospace industry where products often have to tested from -55°C to +70°C.

You said in an earlier thread that bootup times would also be dramatically better after fixing the cold issue.. Any news about that?
I believe he said that they could "...improve booting and shooting in the cold."
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=120889#post120889
which is ambiguous, but I'm guessing he meant that you would be able to boot up in colder weather than before, not that bootup would be faster than before. I'd be happy to be wrong, though.
Congrats on making the camera much improved so quickly! To echo Finner, it would be great to know if -20 C is as low as one camera was tested, or if that should be considered a "best case", or "typical" performance for all cameras?

This is a delay I welcome. Though I was disappointed once in a while with the delays I gotta say, this is an awesome change, because it makes the cam so much more versatile and reliable.
Great you found the part that was preventing the cam from booting at low temperatures. And now I am gonna make a cool snowboard movie. Even me.

Great news. I am glad you are fixing the cameras as best you can before you ship them. It is a lot easier to recall 100 cameras than 1,000 cameras.
If someone has a project they absolutely need the camera for, RED could make some cameras available to early reservation holders that are in a bind. Might be easier than sending out hundreds when there are still known problems.
Personally, I am excited about all the new improvements and accessories.

Now this time I'm realy happy that I dont have my camera already.
I live in Switzerland and -5 C is not realy cold for us. We dont bother about -20 C while we film some snowboard action. All the cams I have ever used never had a problem in these conditions. So first I was shocked hearing about the problems with RED. I was very close to pull the plug. If you live in California then you probably wouldn't care that much but for us Swiss dudes camera problems due to cold teperatures is a deal breaker.:cold:
So this shows me once and for all that Jim and the gang are realy pushing it hard. They want this baby to be perfect. They realy never stop.
If they know the problem they solve it.
So now I believe more than ever in RED. Will there be some new problems, of course, but now I see how the RED team goes after them. This gives me a lot of confidence.
Keep on fighting you are almost there guys.:)

Yeah?? That was really quick
I am not going to question it but I just say Thanks for address the cold boot situation. -20C˚ cold boot without external help seems reasonable enough. As for the delay in shipping, well, it's not a delay. And before there is a bunch of complaints, stop and think how much more reliable the camera will be , think about the immense credibility Red is building and think about there ability to stick around and not fade away as a fad because their products couldn't stand up to the pressures of production. We I would lick to see Red succeed.
We will all be happy in the end.

I met with my business partner today and we are still going to make the Red Hot casing we discussed on the other thread. It will be good to not keep the camera so cold anyway. Plus it will have other uses.

This quick action on Red's part shows just how powerful our community is and what an awesome method of product development Jim has invented.
I don't think those suntanned California boys even believed people would go outdoors at -20C, let alone spend 12 hours shooting in it! I'll bet the testing fridge is the coldest those guys have ever been :-)
Nice work, everybody! We're really building something great here.

This will be the longest weekend ever... Now let's talk payment options. I hear we cant pay with credit cards over $6500? The rest can be wire transfer?
Any idea how long payment processing will take and packing/shipping? Best case, order email comes Monday, wire transfer Monday, payment processes Tuesday, ships next day air Wednesday. And we got it on Thursday/Friday. A one or two day delay spells arrival the following week. No fun for the weekend. :(

Well put. All what matters is the final result. You know, in wildlife photography some seem to explain the shortcomings of their images as if the outcome became better if the audience knew how much sweat or frostbites there were behind the photos.
It's great RED did not accept excuses but instead took the effort to sort this out. Probably a rather small step to RED but a huge save of trouble for the RED users.
Needless to say, it's amazing that this kind of business exists!

Amazing response to the cold boot problem. I've always had faith, but the fast turnaround continues to be incredible!
What about condensation? Going from warm relatively humid interior to sub-zero cold exterior? Obviously an issue with tape mechanisms, but how might it affect a RED ONE?
I understand the interior isn't directly open to the outside as the ventilation is via heatsink. If the weathersealing keeps air from moving in or out of the interior, then it shouldn't be an issue I think, but be good to know for sure.

Don't you have to put the camera in use for it to benefit you for tax reasons? I'm not trying to call you out, just find out for myself, because I was under the impression you actually had to use the item for business during the year (or at least before the end of the 31st)

It he is claiming the purchase on his taxes as a business expense, no he doesn't have to put the camera in use to benefit. It just has to be purchased with the intent to benefit financially.

Hmm, hopefully someone finally realized you need to use mil-spec parts for -50C to +70C instead of cheap off the shelf commerical crap, instead of horrible cheap PCB's cracking or bad soldering. Was it bad caps?
The sensor should actually operate considerably better with a much less dark current at the lower temps.
