Attention Red Team, ET, Wooden Camera, Action Products, JC Camera Systems...
Can someone make a "dummy plate", molded plastic with captive screws, to cover the naked back of my Epic?
It CAN'T be good to have 76 tiny metal connectors naked to the elements, as well as the plethora of metal things (BNC and camera cable connectors)
I'd buy a couple!
Anyone?
Cheers,
Harry

Hi Dave,
I'd buy one. Just need a simple and inexpensive way to cover up the back--as Harry and Tobias have said. In fact, if you want a beta tester for a prototype (our camera's about to shoot a feature in Malaysia) please PM me.
thanks!

As long as its reasonable, I will take as it would be good to have if red mote is off somewhere...red moting

Can I use protective plastic plate and velcro tape? It's ghetto style, but works 'till red mote comes.

We have the option of making these in a high strength plastic or aluminum. Is there a preference?

I think plastic would do just fine. But who knows, aluminum could be great too. I'd be happy to test some protos for you :)

Hi Dave,
I think plastic is fine. My priorities (in order) would be: 1)it seals the back from dust and the occasional water spray, not just velcroed on; 2)easy to take on and off; 3)can't fall off; 4)lightweight; 5)inexpensive. I don't need to it to be super beautiful or styled. Functional.
thanks!

Agree 100% here. Functional, cheap, light. Plastic is the way to go, IMO.

Under $100 for sure. I dunno. If wooden camera can make an Easy plate for $49, I gotta believe a plastic backplate shouldn't cost that much. But what do I know?

Cool ... I am in the ballpark with my pricing of thought then. just working out some numbers and hope to get some working protos by Monday.

Hi Dave,
I'd agree US$50-$100 would be inexpensive and fair (since the market for these is not that large). One possible idea (for which you could charge a fair bit more): allow an option for people to print things on the back, e.g.,
KANDA RIVER PRODUCTIONS
A CAM
etc. Could even do logos I suppose...

I'm glad a third party is stepping up to the plate yet again, but this item really should:

1. Come standard with a professional camera package.

2. Cost under $50 to replace in the Red store.

Think of it like a PL mount cap (http://www.red.com/store/accessories/product/dsmc-pl-mount-body-cap)

+ 1 - plastic, u/v stabilised, recessed o-ring (if we're getting fancy) captive brass strengtheners to distribute the pressure from the bolts / screws.

Coloured GFRP could work too, friction or click fit onto the mote vlock, be sub $200.

You might consider selling them only in 2packs, both to get the cost down and your volume up

Nice, great start.

Here are my thoughts for improvements. Do not take it as I hack down on your creation, so far you have the lead but I think if you make it so it snap to the V lock instead of using screws you could sell them a bit easier. Since when we all get our Redmotes the need to take off / put on will be primary focus...
So if you can make it from some flexing plasitic and so it snaps when pushed over the V lock would be great.
Then the estetics, I would pay 30bucks instead of 25 if you made it so it lines up with the outer edge of the back of the camera, just let it match the shape of that whole surface instead of just the middle square.
Also type something on it... like "plastic cap for connectors protection module" or "no function what so ever module" or "bitter side of camera lid" or "actors on other side of camera" or "back end" or "complete camera infront" or... something stupid :)

I appreciate the suggestions. I designed mine to be as inexpensive as possible while still getting the job done. With the added complexity you've suggested, I'd have to charge almost twice as much.

I like the idea of name on it.

Protection Module
Dummy Module
Skull Cap

Didn't you get the plate from RED with your epic? There should have been an plate on the camera when you got it.

Just a follow up.
For no particular reason (apologies to the other folks making similar products), I ordered up two of Dave's covers.
They are sitting on my desk at home, not at my shop, so I have not tried them on the Epic yet.
However, at first blush, the seem perfect. Good looking, solid, pebble-finish ABS. Thick enough (1/4"?) not to be flimsy. Cuts are all rounded.
Overall, very nice, and a good price.
I may add my own mod: captive screws with knurled heads for fast, tool-free on/off.
Cheers,
Harry

Hi Dave,

Got 2 of your plates and they work well but if I could make a suggestion and include 2 M4 screws with knobs so taking on and off could be tool less when you need to put the redmote on.

Thanks,
