I found a proxy mode in the interface, but I'm not sure how it works, and the manual is pretty sketchy about this.

Davinci also talks about "On the fly rendering" and a Render Cache Mode on their website, but I can't find that anywhere in the manual, just in their website FAQ.

Anybody know?

BTW - We love the software here, but HATE the manual. It reads like a 1999 manual for a PC motherboard and basically explains nothing. Who wrote that? Do they get a commission off training videos or what?

Don't bother. Right now cache render is nearly useless. Every time you bypass your grades, Resolve needs to red-render everything. If you want to try it, just select "cache everything" and it will do just that.
As far as proxies, as far as I know, it only works with DPX.

Thanks Jake, but where is the "cache everything" checkbox? For fear of sounding like an idiot I simply can't find it.

Option-R.
Keep pushing it. It is a toggle op.
