i'm curious if it is possible to have a bnc running from epic into blackmagic decklink and somehow for it to capture only when camera rolls.
in the same way that people are using external capture devices like kipro mini / pix240 etc.
any thoughts?

Also curious about this. If timecode is passed through on the HD-SDI signal from Epic/Scarlet into the decklink that would be a great way to log your footage.

I've been dabbling with Blackmagic Media Express to capture from camera on set, but it doesn't support any kind of record triggering. I think what we all want to do is theoretically possible, we just have to find (or write) a software that can do it. According the the EPIC manual,
In addition to video, the HD-SDI output also provides two channels of embedded audio, Time of Dayand Edge timecode, record Tally flag and Clip Name information as SMPTE RP-188 VITC2 HANCmetadata.

I see two possible ways to approach this. The most direct would be to have the software check for the tally flag. The other would be to check for when the Edge code starts and stops rolling. I've tried Premiere CS6, FCP7, and the Blackmagic app, and I can't get any of them to see any timecode from the camera. For now I like Media Express the best because it's interface is so incredibly simple, and it automatically increments take numbers in the file naming. The only problem is someone has to sit there and hit record/stop for every take.

Another possibility is to just capture non-stop, and have a separate software read that stream simultaneously, monitoring with a sort of "scene detect" feature. It could be set to notice the red record circle on screen and output new files for each take that way.
