If you build it, someone will make a feature film with it. It's been done with the 5d Mark II, the 7d, and even the T2i.

How long do you think it will take for someone to make a feature with the Scarlet after release?

A good feature or 72 minutes of something which one could call a feature?

The real question is how long until a wide release feature is in theatres shot solely with the scarlet...

My Answer: Not Long

Prediction: Dec 2012 for the first film shot 100% (or nearly so) on Scarlet to get a theatrical release.

Reasoning: The film will be shot this spring, posted over the summer and hit the festival circuit in the fall. It'll win something and secure a distribution deal that specifies a theatrical release that year, in order to qualify for Academy awards buzz (for a hot actor or writer, or *maybe* a director).

I have 2 features planned with Scarlet already. Definitely won't be first to the finish line, that's for sure. Agree with Erich - Earliest would be end of 2012.

Joseph Hutson is wrapping his first feature "The Valley of the Dogs" shot entirely on Scarlet prototypes. It's kinda Mad Max meets To Live and Die in LA meets Spy Kids. Sorry guys - the kid is aggressive

its better to shoot something that doesn't suck, than it is to rush to be first...

Lets see, how long will it take to arrive, then shoot, and edit. Yeah, should be about that long.

...has he done a feature yet?

Much better to take your time and do it right..or at least best you can.

A bunch of people were fighting/trying to be
the first F900 feature in 2000 or so. Don't think any of them
are out there still shooting any stuff now.

For how long did he actually have that camera?

My Answer: Not Long

Exactly! Sure everybody have plans of doing a feature, I do too, and hopefully we will all succeed - but realisticly not many of them will get a wide release. And in the end this is what counts, because the better the film, the more realistic is it to be released through cinema. Fingers crossed for all of us.

Yeah I have a four part film series planned for my scarlet as well. Also Would love to film a remake of seven samurai with it if I could ever get the rights.

I was thinking of something 72 minutes or more you could call a feature, something making the rounds of the film festivals.

Wide release? That's hard to say. No one knows when a film will be good, certainly not the writer and director. You hope they will be good, but you don't know. At least a distributor will have to think it's good before there's a wide release. That could take a while.

If it's good AND you're first you get bonus publicity.

Or if it's really, really, really horrible and you're first, you get bonus publicity.

If you're first and it's just mediocre, probably won't do anything for you to be first.

. . . joking about Joseph Hutson "The Valley of the Dogs" film of course but not about the marketing importance of being first to market like Vincent Laforet. From a NYT still photographer (dying trade) to the Voice of All DSLR Filmmaking in one weekend. Philip Bloom = much better filmmaker, but not an opportunist - he makes gentle art and runs the best blog for young filmmakers. Vinny is running around SoCali with the new Canon S35 and will get more famous from that starting tomorrow.

you got me. I was looking forward to The Valley of the Dogs.

IMO, Bloom is a good cinematographer, or DP whatever you want to call it. But I've never seen him release anything that wasn't as boring as watching paint dry. Very, very pretty framing, lighting and camera moves, of the most boring content imaginable. Oh look, here's a gorgeous shot... of an old man smoking a pipe. Wow, look at that beautiful dolly... of some bushes and a rusty wagon.

Let Tarantino direct and Bloom DP then it might get interesting.

Agreed on Bloom's simple, everyday content - which is exactly why he is such a great model for young fimmakers. There's a bunch of kids who have access to Mom making pasta and a GH2 or equal. But can they do this tonight?: http://vimeo.com/17062701

Zero budget+common scenarios+cheap camera can = fun little movies that are teaching points

You should seriously warn people before watching this around dinner time. You can get seriously hungry by watching!
