I don't know what it's for, but 6mp at 60fps at 10bit (in a chip that will probably find its way to $400 point and shoot still cameras) is pretty darned cool.

If anyone BUT Sony had this technology, you might expect it to show up in their next iteration of video cameras.

Clearly Sony intends to introduce a consumer 6mpixel still camera which will also make 6K movies. Currently named the Still Format Cine Alta 6K. It will retail for $150,000 US to prevent sales of this new product, from cutting into Sony's sales of their current line of 1080P cameras which retail for about $70,000 plus lens.

So basically it's a 3K chip. This should already be out on the market. This would be useful for people wanting to shoot 2K HD movies and projects, because the Sony chip's resolution would allow for cropping and downsampling for increased 2K image quality.
