I love everything about the Scarlet x and will be purchasing one for my horror movie that we'll shoot in the spring. Well done Red.
One spec that does concern me is the 1k at 120fps. This seems too low res. Does this become an unusable spec? Am I wrong?

Depends. Are you using it for YouTube?

I was wondering that too. Will it at least be 720p? The crop factor sounds scary though... would be nice if it did some down resing from the full frame.

No. I'm using it for a feature film. Every other spec fits what we're trying to do, but this spec may not be usable for us. Not complaining, it's a fantastic camera. But I do wish it had been a bit higher res on 120 fps

Yeah that is the one thing 1k at 120, and also why not 1920 by 1080

1K on the Scarlet is 1024 x 540.

so basically 1080p is 4 times the resolution of 1k on scarlet. this could be the answer to 'why' there isn't 1080p. Obviously 4 times higher resolution is a lot, so it's not like it's a small difference that a slight tweak could have added if their circuitry/boards can't support it

2k at 120 fps would amazing, i know i sound like a typical American who just got handed something that is out of this world and then asks for more....but I was kind of down when i heard I could only do 60 fps at 2k....

For a feature film going to the silver screen, the 1k footage would need some professional post work to make it look right on the screen.
If you're outputting for 1080p HD then its not as much of an issue. You'll probably still need to use some plugin in post to uprez/enhance the footage.

Well they don't want to cut into their Epic market.

Can't you rent an Epic for those 120fps shots ? It can be expansive but if you can schedule all the shots in a minimum of shooting time...

Yes, that is an option. Rent an Epic or Red One for the slow motion days which won't be that many, and for the rest of the shoot use the Scarlet.

I personally think a year from now 120 fps 2k redcode 10:1 will be unlocked in a software update....just a prediction of course.

Well... If you can afford it I think Epic would be a better option. If you need 120fps you can shoot it at 5K resolution and downsize it in post. Quite a nice impact on the audience I suppose ('cause by definition slow motion is... slow and give the audience more time to watch -or admire- every detail).
But if you like you can have 150fps at 4K resolution if you need it ! (and more with less resolution but I'm sure you know Epic's specs :biggrin5:)

Agreed. I do see an advantage of potentially getting say 100fps at 1280px wide. I wonder if this is possible. Not a huge leap, but a useful one.

Yeah it will be great to know you can rent an epic and start shooting without a "hick" once you know you Scarlet X!
