View Full Version : REDUSER Retreat

Been toying around with this idea for a while. Since there was no official Reduser event at NAB this past year, I've had this thought of gathering a select group and spending a long weekend in the woods (location TBD) talking shop, shooting something on RED (Epic, Scarlet, R1, whatever) and having a good time. Some of us have been around for a while, got to know each other a little bit, and I think it could be a fun time.

There would be some logistics to figure out, but I was thinking perhaps December or January if there is interest. I'll check in with some sponsors, and perhaps a BTS video.

I know schedules are always tough to line up, so we'll have to see what the response is like. This would be an invite only event.

Thoughts?

East coast or West coast?

Probably East Coast, but I'm open to suggestions. I know we're all spread out. I'm thinking of a location away from the big lights of the city. Think Vermont, Montana, that sort of thing. Would rent a large cabin.

Of course, despite being out in the woods, we would have a kickass post station setup to watch the footage.

Uh, Steve, Montana is not on the East Coast. But I'm up for it! Fun idea.

OK, here's an idea, how about this place: http://www.vermejoparkranch.com/

Yeah, I'm not limiting to East Coast, so it's open to possibilities. The reason I was thinking East Coast is just from an organizational perspective. Organizing the NAB events was always tricky because it was on the other side of the country for me. :-)

Steve, I love this idea... I know some really good places in the Southern Appalachians. I'm also good friends with a park ranger in Southern California. Even if I can't make it I'd be happy to try to help you guys get something set up :)

Well if it's invite only then I'm out - can't seem to stay on the Island (wink wink). You know what Scott Kelby does with his still photo educational/mini trade-show road tour is a concept that I would like for RED to explore. The proof of concept for a road show could be this retreat where there is classroom instruction (REDCine Certification ?!?!), 3rd party vendor displays / presentations, user round table discussions and perhaps a film festival where we can hand out awards to each other like they do in Hollywood. Central US might be best, like Denver area. Boulder is nice anytime of year and is close enough to the Mts if some folks want to go skiing after. Got a major airport there that flies direct from/to most cities.

Cost would be a big factor, having it within carpool range from NYC would help us west coasters.

Or...just get Jim or Jarred to offer a location around LA? Or... did Red Ranch in Vegas ever happen?

Grand plan Mr Sherrick, they say Colorado is smack dab in the middle. Why not Rocky Mountains and Snow to test the Epic's HDRX and DR to the muthaeffin max!

East AND West. LA seems to have a lot and NYC on the right coast. A few people prep some demos/talks, but informal and maybe vendors pay a fee to come pitch their products; therefore contributing to the cost? People bring what they are doing, so a RED film festival from personal projects with a bit of a critique. - Could be cool and actually a write off if we are attending "classes" etc. and like it or not, we would all be learning something new from each other...

paulherrin

just had a thought... what about more than one, simultaneously. could be anywhere from 3-30 participants. i.e. east coast/west coast... or even northwest, southwest, central, northeast, southeast, canada, europe, etc etc. maybe not the place to start out, but that could be cool and if there is a LOT of interest, could keep numbers reasonable so it's not just a big convention. it would be cool (if we can get it in the woods) to have a small portion of sharing between the groups over the web. i.e. each group presents some shots or very short films made that weekend. always nice to see different parts of the world in high resolution style... i dunno, just some thoughts. the best part would be the retreat and rejuvenation that can be found in that setting amongst new perspectives and bonds, but something like that might be a good way to build larger community and context to transition back into the "real world" :)

Less expensive B&B resort retreat and more educational and industry mixer for me. I love you guys but not in a mountain retreat hot tub kind of way . . .

Boulder is my first pick for:
Airline ease (big United hub): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver_International_Airport
And stuff to do: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boulder,_Colorado

They have several film festivals in Boulder each year and it is a cool college town. Might retire there if kid gets into their college.

I'd suggest we pay close attention to locations that Airlines offer aggressive pricing for.. I.E. Florida can sometimes get tickets as low as $150 each way.
Let's attack this from a cost perspective first..
Nice quiet area, but within 20 or 30min of airport.

Thinking out loud here

From second cities like San Diego, to the East Coast you have to change planes at a hub - making travel an all day affair and raising the chances of lost luggage 73% give or take. My vote is to locate the event near a hub so everyone is flying a single segment to get there.

Just got back to Diego from Miami - 14 hour ordeal complete with: broken down connecting plane causing major delay and . . . yup, luggage lost in Cincinnati.

Definitely something to consider. Southwest and JetBlue have lots of flights that are in the ~$80 each way range. Trick is to avoid holidays. And spring break...

Something close to a major airport is a good idea. A lot of people will be turned off of the idea if they have to fly somewhere, then rent a car and drive another 400 miles.

...What about Moab / Zion? Hey, we could crash at Gibby's place. ;) I dunno, I'd actually prefer some place more coastal. West or east doesn't matter to me.

Seriously, if we're going to make it an all-day travel ordeal, then I'm voting for Alaska.
