On looking through listings of second hand lenses I quite often see a phrase like "minor marks on the lens coating, but nothing that affects the image". I am always dead suspicious of comments like this but am I being too picky. Would the lens exhibit a slightly greater propensity to flare? or if the marking is very slight is it not something to worry about?

What about having a lens recoated, is that a realistic proposition?

Hi,

Old lenses often have minor marks, they will be worse than indicated for sure. Probably not an issue 99% of the time. People like to clean lenses, over time this damages the coatings.

Will cost a fortune to recoat.
