Can some Epic-Users share their Experience about the "Ruggedness" of the Cam (which probably is applicable also to the Scarlet) This may sound silly, caus you don't intend to drop your 55K-Camera on the Boardwalk. But maybe someone already did by accident. I'm planning on doin sum pretty hard stuff with the scarlet (Skateboard, Parkour, Freerunning, Caves etc) with a lot of vibration and potential to bump into corners and edges. Alredy killed two 7Ds - of course: They're made of Plastic ;-) Maybe somebody has some experience about the built quality of the Reds under severe Conditions ... after all this baby is made of metal, innit?

Let's just say I've seen some RED's survive some things they probably shouldn't have. I think they are rugged, certainly on the exterior. The Red One is built like a tank and the Epic/Scarlets are built pretty darn tough too. I would never recommend dropping any camera, but if there's one that could survive it would be RED (I'm excluding film cameras. Those are built to last wars).

I think you'll be fine. And solid sate media is your friend.

I can't answer your question, but I would caution you on the big assumption. The $55k Epic is the "M". The body on that puppy is machined from (I believe) a single piece of metal. The Scarlet X isn't going to have that kind of strength.

I can unequivocally state that the Epic (either M or X) is outstandingly rugged. The kind of punishment I've seen it survive is remarkable. Stronger than any camera I've ever owned.

What about weather-proofing? Is Epic sealed for weather in anyway?

Well ... looking at the Van and the Heat Grill on the Top i wouldn't recommed shootin in the Rain. For Weather-Proof Shooting you better use a appropriate Weather-Protection or at least the goot old Triple-Plasticbag-sticking-the-Lens-out-and-Tape-it-with-Gaffa-Technique ;-)

and thanx guys ... to read about the outstanding ruggedness makes me feel even better about my scarlet. I never mean to hurt my Cam, but in some Circumstances a little Bump here and there ain't avoidable.

There is no contact between the fan and the electronics. The top of the cam is sealed. But avoid taking rain bath or salt water...

Sascha - I believe that the Scarlet and Epic-X's are made of cast aluminum while the Epic-M is machined from a single block of aluminum. If you are going to put the camera through the kind of environments that you apoke of, I would recommend looking into an "M" or at the very least get a Tactical Cage from Red. The cast aluminum is structurally strong, but will fail via cracking if hit sharply where a machined aluminum part will dent if stuck in a similar manner. Just the nature of the two materials. Can't wait to see your clips.

Hey Sascha

the Epic is like a tank. You could kill some one with this thing. Very rugged.
It is also not as light as it looks. Going handheld with all the bells and whistles is not a peace of cake. There's some wait to it.
The Scarlet will be pretty much the same I guess.

So now worries.

Cheers

Does anyone have suggestions for Scarlet/Epic weather protection? Any third-party casings to protect the brain? Almost all of my shooting takes place in intense wind and snow, oftentimes heavy and wet stuff. I've fried Panasonic cams in the past under such conditions... As bomber as I'm sure the brain is, seems like it would be wise to find some protection. Any scoops on solutions outside of the tried and (sometimes) true plastic bag method?
