Out of curiosity why blue?
Don't you see all the green plants?

Hi,
Why Blue or Green when a simple mask would work? You will have to paint mattes for overlaps in any case.

A simple mask? Oh my God! Obviously you have never done 10 hours of rotoscoping for one week to know what it feels like :-)
The masking for the performer's overlapping is indeed not very complicated but the background replacement around the set is. If they didn't use the blue screen they would need a dedicated rotoscoping department like ILM's to finish the video in our lifetimes and that would certainly cost a little bit more! :-)

Hi,
10 years ago I shot a £400,000 tv commercial, we did many tests and shooting for real produced the best results. Every VFX guy's comment 'Amazing Green Screen', there was none! LOL

Greg,
Thinking about this a bit more, the vast majority of blue or green screen shots are not perfect, one can usually see a softened edge or lost hair here & there.
But then again I shoot mainly on film as it usually looks better, VFX & CG guys prefer digital because it's easier. I am interested in better, not easier or cheaper.
YMMV

arent we all?
but usually its a combo of both...no question though that a green screen would make life alot easier on this shot, it would still require roto work. To expect to roto that entire scene w/o the aid of a gs would be a nightmare.

From what I often see on the screen, I am not sure!
Quite often a soft edge wipe will be enough, on the job 10 years ago 4 weeks of post was budgeted for, it was completed in 4 days it was way easier than expected.

Can you show us the spot? I'd be interested in seeing it to see what you are talking about.
