We just finished another very cold night of shooting in Moscow.
All exteriors, all night and very cold -8
However our camera booted right up, we had no issues and we shot for 12 hours straight.
Our secret recipe.
1 x Timberland 100% Wool Scarf.
1 x Heater Blankets.
1 x Bottle of Stolichnaya Vodka.
The Vokda was for me.
Happy Holidays!

We did not experience any problems, other than very quick draw due to the cold. also the form fitted blanket served as a rain cover or in this case snow cover.
I would also recommend other brands of Vodka,
Next time I will save up and buy a bottle of KAUFFMAN Vodka.

I'm sorry, but that's pathetic. Lets hope the promised cold weather fixes work as advertised.
PS. I've heard that Stoli sells the good stuff in Russia and ships the watered down swill to us. True?

Not pathetic, just practical.
Lots of cameras go a bit screwy as you reach for the magic 0ºC and below. Even if the camera stated that it could do it I'd still take on measures similar to those above.
Batteries, viewfinders, mic pre-amps, lubricants, tripods etc all have separate temperature range properties. Often most practical solution is simply to keep them warm when it's cold. See above.

I know prior to experiencing the cold weather of Moscow, I would have perhapse looked at this and said pathetic as well. Although I am quite proud of my work. It's based more upon form & function then style.
The problems which we experienced were more than just simply camera not booting up. We also had issues in some of our image with blue & green artifacts. Ever since we made this body glove/rain cover we had no issues what so ever.
Thanks
Just a desperate means
for a desperate man!

Very good creativity on the heat blankets (the vodka seems to be a more obvious fix). I can imagine your crew all wrapped up like that.
Do you think that the cold was effecting more than the functioning of the camera (ig. boot-up)? Are you saying that the cold seem to effect the quality of the image as well with the blue & green artifacts? How pronounced was the artifacting? Was is constant or occasional?
Was the footage shot in Moscow on the older prototype RED #75? Were you operating in -8 on the Celsius scale or the Fahrenheit?
Has anyone else found extreme environmental factors to effect the image, in addition to the "mechanics" of the camera?

I'm very interested to learn more about the extreme temperatures issues affecting image quality which have been mentioned in this thread.
My understanding has been that the issues were specifically regarding the function of the camera being affected (boot up, etc.) and this is the first mention of the QUALITY of the image having been influenced.
I am wondering if anyone else with experience shooting in extreme temperature has seen this effect? In either hot or cold temperatures.
I've followed the various threads discussing the issues with extreme temperature affecting the RED, and I know that the cold issue HAS been address in the newest version of RED being shipped. If this IS a valid concern, has this image quality issue been addressed as part of the fix? Is there another thread or post that answers this?

I am really curious of the material you wrapped the RED with.
What is the name, where do you find it ?
Please forgive my ignorance !
Thank you !

So yes the cold did effect more than just boot up, It effected the picture as well. It was constant until we came up with this solution.
The temp in Moscow read -8 Celsius however it felt like -8 Fahrenheit.

Hello Leon,
Merry Christmas to you as well and Happy New Year!
The material used can be found at any local space shuttle facility.
We found ours on our shoot in Moscow at the RKA or also known as Russian Federal Space Agency.
In the United States we normally use NASA.
I believe in France it's the CNES or again known as Centre National d'Études Spatiales.
Just kidding actually our Director founded in a tiny Hardware store 60km. outside Moscow.
The name for it in the states is just heater blanket normally found at Home Depot. or in France BHV.
Good Luck

I am not sure if it's the cold weather, lack of sleep or just the Vodka.
But Yes of course I was kidding. you can get directly from Home Depot and bypass the middle man (NASA). I am sure that's where they get it from to.

Nice liquid. But hey, its for snobs.. ;-)
PS. I've heard that Stoli sells the good stuff in Russia and ships the watered down swill to us. True?
There are 2 truths out there:
1 they keep the good stuff for their own.
2 the good stuff goes outside to keep up the legend.
Thats for sure how they do it Switzerland. You know swiss chocolate ? The better selections go outside.
