The new firewire standard announced last week promises 3.2Gb/sec and the press release says that it will handle HD signals cheaper than HDMI over long distances.
Ratification due next year.
Apart from the potential benefits for RED data transfer, could this beome a pipeline for 4K monitoring?

seems like they are trying to jump over gigE copper networking as 10gig is still hideously expensive and you have to realistically run fiber with 10gig. i've built my own little monster PC and added a firewire 400/800 ports and upgraded to ubcore pro drivers and can push my external lacie drives to full FW800. there are already network settings to toggle to get to 3.2gb/s but where are you going to get a camera/sensor with a 1394B chipset? if i had a macbook pro, i could probably transfer near 3.2gb/s limit...

The 3.2Gbps is just the next logical evolutionary step for firewire. It's really a simple modification to FW800. This will make a nice option in addition to eSATA (which is currently 2.5Gbps).
I'm not sure what the claims of it being better at long runs than HDMI is all about. Firewire is still going to be limited to about 50ft, or about the same as DVI / HDMI. With DVI/HDMI it's easy to use a booster or repeater, I suppose Firewire can use a hub...
Anyway, I look forward to it. Hope my next notebook I buy (probably late next year maybe?) will have it.
