I heartily recommend those that are brave (and if you are 1-100 you absolutely qualify) to upgrade to Build 12. Don't forget to do the Black Shading Calibration.
Why get conservative now? We are going to replace your cameras in a month anyway!

Good to now dear Jim, but how can I try built 12 without getting my 222. Some news out there?

Hi Daniel
Looks like you will have a nice gift under the Christmas tree very soon. I would say: better late than never! And facing firmware built 12 and all the hardware improvements it was worth to wait!
Happy New Year to you, the RED team and all colleagues waiting for their gifts,
Roland
(Mine will be ready in April/May.)

OMG!
I'm so excited, I just can't hide it! I'm loosing control but I think I like it!
edit: After writing that silly post it hit me: it's been 2 years and 20 days that I first heard of the RED and been following along. I still remember that first article by Mike at hdforindies (read it here: LINK (http://www.hdforindies.com/2005/12/new-digital-cinema-camera-coming-red)). How far they've gone and how much they taught us in the way. Amazing, History in the making and we got to seat first row all along. Thanks to Jim's generosity, passion and patience. OK, I'll stop now or I'll start crying... But seriously Jim: THANK YOU SO MUCH.
edit 2: just re-read the whole article. the comments are priceless!

Build 12 is historic...
Hey Jim,
In terms of improved image quality, as I remember you saying elsewhere that if you use build 12 you'llget "great images" and if you don't, you won't, how much better is the image now? What has improved and how, less noise, more DR, what exactly makes the older images "not great" (even though we know they were) as compared to the new ones? I don't need a white paper on it but one of your succint and to the point paragraphs listing exactly where the new magic resides would do...or point me somewhere where I can read about it.
Thanks,
Rocco Schult

Jim, great stuff etc. but take at least those 5 minutes and save what you can from the day. We know your goals and they are humble.
We appreciate yours and everybodies elses dedication at RED, but pleease, take a minute.
Its cristmas.
Merrymerry, and so on.

Since my camera is coming in the next batch, I'm wondering if it will come with build 12 already installed?

I believe build 12 isn't out of beta yet (Jim said a few more days), and my camera ships next week.

I'll be wiring them the money on Friday.

I've read through the feature upgrades in build 12 [thank you for fixing the sensor flare!], but does the upgrade go beyond these features? Is there a notable image quality/noise/compression difference, or is it another "normal" upgrade with new features?
Just curious... don't want to step into a beta firmware from which we can't return. :)

So far I dont see any noticeable improvement. The blocky compression in the shadows looks the same. But my testing has been limited so far.

My bank (wamu) said it would take an average of two business days for the transfer to complete. You might want to do it thursday to be safe, unless your bank does things faster or unless you don't mind waiting an extra day.
There still is a chance it may come friday but we'll see. I can hardly sleep hehe.

Well, I guess that's my answer there. Hmmm, I expected a jump in actual image quality, since it seems to me that the black shading calibration would reset the noise floor...

Damn! I just found out my loan won't fund until the 2nd of January, then it may take several days past that for the wire to go through to Red, then 2-3 days for shipping. Oh, well. What's a few more days when I've been waiting a year and a half? I just want it in time for Sundance.

How should we? In the same manner we have up until this point, or is there some change on the back end that we should be aware of?

I am just looking at the footage directly in RedCine...no processing. I am justing looking at one frame.
I locked down the camera, shot a few seconds w/ build 11.
Then updated to Build 12, ran Black Calibration and shot a few seconds of same scene w/ Build 12.
Loaded the two clips into Red Cine and toggled back and forth.
A very crude test at best. The area I am looking at is the shadows. I can upload the two raw files to my FTP if you like.

Nice job Greg, though I suppose its academic since build 11 will soon join MacOS9 in the dustbin of history.
Moving forward I am very interested in Brook's query about processing philosophy. As the tools evolve some of the methods I found effective in September and October may no longer be the best route.
I understand that different material and specific looks will dictate choices and that the subject is extremely complex. That said, would anyone on the Red Team care to proffer a "quick start" guide to using the RAW editors (RedAlert & RedCine) to best generate high DR, low noise and (when desired) color accurate "one lights"?
Yes Virginia, I know that RA & RC are not color grading apps per se but for those of us who can't afford a Scratch seat and would prefer to grade natively in RAW the RED apps are the most attractive option.

Blair... you can go a long way in REDCINE. I have been using it all week and I am finding ways to get great images out.

So....
I'm in the middle of a project (we went down for the holidays). When we go back up, what are the implications of using footage in Redcine that was shot on previous builds mixed with footage shot from the new build?
...Any problems?

Hey Blair -
I am sure you will eventually see some "quick start" stuff and "tools and tricks" on this forum and other websites.
My point of view is this:
The single biggest "boner" you have with the REDALERT and REDCINE is the fact that you can't output to a proper monitor. Yes, I know we can all calibrate out MacBook Pros and all our other 8-bit LCD's - and you can get in the "ballpark" but it's just not the same - especially with shots right on the "edge" that need the extra love to get across the finish line.
My advice for folks out there without Scratch or another DI system is to think of REDCINE as your "telecine" - NOT your color grading application. Imagine you shoot 35mm and then go into a supervised telecine transfer session - you are now doing a basic, "best light" - primary color correct - by roll or by scene or shot by shot.
Then, on whatever system you use that gets you to a proper monitor, do your final color grade - even if that is Final Cut Pro with Colorista and a Kona 3 - that will serve you better than just trying to cross the finish line with REDCINE only.
Now, I am not exactly sure WHY Red doesn't route the GPU processed image out a KONA 3 - just like Final Touch(did)/Color does - YES I understand that will slow down FPS - but MUCH more useful to see image on a monitor than see it in real-time - maybe it's a patent thing from the Final Touch acquisition (if so, Apple would own that now).
Yeah, REDCINE out the Kona 3 - even if it is a seperate version like "REDCINE PRO" and costs money - would be killer.

Realistic option maybe the ability to add the "DUAL HEAD/SDI " optional module from Scratch into RC?
Isn't a Scratch system in exactly the same situation as RC unless this module is added?
Like you said if this was an optional $$ addon for RC that only works with rEd would be another sales avenue. May effect the sales of Scratch red post systems though.
