View Full Version : Is anyone seriously trying to put together a RED bootcamp?

'cause if they are, I'm definitely interested in taking part. I'm hoping a very patient expert or two to put something together for us newbies. Take us from the beginning and through the whole workflow in a single weekend.

I'm all eyes and ears. . .

Offhollywood will be doing a one-time "one off" boot-camp training event in NY targeted at cinematographers and will cover post workflow - and a separate, smaller event targeted at producers and production companies.

Both will be in Feb. in NY. Both will have pretty limited attendance. PM me if you want an advance invite.

Details in mid/late Jan.

I'd love to be able to do the Offhollywood camp, but I'm afraid my expertise level is WAY too low for that. . .

:-(

I need the basic food group model right now. I'll step up to the big-time when I can.

we have one in the works. we have partnered with paul taylor, the foremost steadicam trainer in the world, to create a 3 day course, it may be compressed to one day, but the idea is to focus on cam op, set op and then post op.

more info to come. paul has trained thousands of steadicam ops throughout the world over the last 15 years.

One is coming up in Paris as well at www.locared.com but I'm not sure if this is interesting for US people. So far we cover in a couple of days the full production aspect and the post-production pipeline based on RedCine, Avid, Final Cut and Scratch. We have already been doing 2 sessions in the last few weeks things will get more serious when we receive the Red Drives and the EVF. Our goal is to hit a full week bootcamp with on field case studies.
Can't wait to receive the new Red Cooke S4 set along with the metadata transfer protocol active onto the Red to use with PfTrack.

Feel free to share with us your experience of other bootcamps so that we can improve ours.

since we did 100s of trainings for discreet logic, we will 100% offer trainings and already have several bookings, 14 iirc.

right now we are locking down the content and are not decided if the first classes will be a general digital cinematography training very focused on red or "pure red".

reason for this is that many dps and producers who booked the classes have not enough digital experience yet to understand the "digital lab" workflows.

depending on our cameras delivery date these events will be feb/march, in berlin.

We plan a pure Red workshop in Germany at our company too, but weŽll receive our camera not until March or April, so this is not going to happen until mid 2008, I guess.

If red wanted to do a "bootcamp" in March, I can sponsor it in Hollywood in either a 175 seat or a 400 seat movie theater equipped with a lobby, stage, etc...

BTW Valde-- You guys... "Always Ready" was excellent. I am in awe of Ms. Silvia Bigolin. You guys are having all the fun. :-)

Hey thanks for the post... Let me try and answer

We have two courses at www.fxphd.com The training is just starting for the year so now is a great time to discuss it.

The first which we also ran last term (oct07) is a basic step by step through the camera and the post workflow. The second course which is new this term is a production course - which is more random but focused on more cool and interesting aspects of RED.
Let me explain in a bit more detail.

Course 1: RED 201 Production and Workflow.

Class 1: Overview of RED and how it works

Class 2 Rigging and mounting your camera

Class 3: Lens, testing, filters

Class 4: Recording, codecs and media

Class 5: Menus

Class 6: ASA, exposure and how RED compares to 35mm

Class 7: Red Alert and Red Cine

Class 8: Scratch and serious production workflow

Class 9: FCP/Flame, Tiff and DPX

Class 10: Grading: DOP and Colorist

The new course is
RED202: RED Project - Shoot through Post

This course takes a practical look at using the RED camera, from filming a piece, to editing that piece and doing some effects for it. The aim is to simply do a job and along the way discuss the latest approaches to using RED. We will do it completely for real as if it was a real job, but also highlight any tips and tricks -- and bugs -- we have found with the RED camera.

The classes will be more operational than the introductory course, with special attention given to Scratch. This course will be less theory and more practical tips and post production with Scratch, REDCine and REDAlert, combined with FCP and AVID. This course builds on the RED201 course and assumes some level of knowledge about the RED workflow.

I hope that answers your questions. So far the courses have been incredibly well received.

Thanks and sorry if this read a bit like an ad...

Any more word on possible RED Bootcamps coming up around March/April? I'm planning to be in the USA for 3-4 weeks around NAB. It would be great to do a course while I'm in town. I need to book airline tickets soon so any info would be welcome.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the info. But we should be getting our camera any day now, so I would hope that by the begining of the summer I should be pretty comfortable and deeply entrenched in our workflow. What's appealing to me about Mark's workshop is that almost no one outside of Red has had more experience up to this point. However, the more people out there educating about Red workflow and how to get the most out of this tool, the better!

Mark,

Is this still in the works or has it been put on hold?

YES - but it MIGHT have to be after NAB. Depends on a few things.

We are building a new facility and shooting RED all over the place - (in three states this week) - so .. stay tuned -

I am going to post a link to a simple email sign up for all "Offhollywood news & events" no latter than this weekend - so anyone interested gets informed - I try to answer as many PM's and emails as I can - but YES - I am going to do something cool - leaning more towards "advanced tips and tricks" focus - stay tuned -

We have been doing new RED courses EVERY quarter since we got the camera last year.

In the current term we have a course on using a RED for Feature film production, discussing LUTs, workflow, also how to film - lighting considerations, grading and workflow..,we will take the shots to final film out and even give you a chance to get a copy of the final film out, or files if you wish.

Please email me if you have any questions

mikes@fxphd.com

You can also here us on

podcast where ever week or so we do a show on the red, and its users.

Mike, I really enjoyed participating in fxphd last term, but this term doesn't really offer anything I'm interested in besides your DP/RED course. Is there anyway to just subscribe to that class?
