Yup I'll be shooting Red in Cape Town. Ordered in June, so beginning of '08. Magus ordered a few but it looks like mardis gras will be the first to have a 4k cam in the mother city.

My wife is from Capetown and still has a house there. Need a second camera, I'll be there in a jiffy. There are direct flights from Atlanta.

I'm gonna be in SA for up to 6 months starting first week of September. Due to get RED end of December. Temporary residence papers are for a year so may take a bit of free time at end of project, if OK'd by the bosses, so will also be looking to find some REDhedz to hang out with. Will be looking to shoot stock Natural History for a few weeks months if it happens.
Cheers,
Mark.

I was in Cape Town two weeks ago filming a spot for Capital One - what a fantastic city!!!! Moonlighting films roadhoused the production. DOP was a great guy called Terence Martitz. I had a blast. Just finishing the post fx now.
BTW I was born in Zim... that's another story!
Alex
BTW 2: I spread the good word about Red for the week that I was there. Not too many folks had heard of it yet.

Guys, welcome aboard! The mother city happens to be one of the most beautiful and picturesque cities in the world. Captured in 4k, I believe it will be more beautiful!
Go Redheads!

I went to AFDA film school in Cape Town and have been working there since graduating. It's truly a one-of-a-kind city, not only is it one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but it's got incredible geographic and cultural diversity. Great locations to photograph. Plus a solid film infrastructure, and fresh stories to tell for decades to come. I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but Cape Town isn't just about the city itself, it's also the whole Cape peninsula, the wine country and townships. I shot a bunch of short films in Langa and Guguletu and l love the vibrancy and color of that environment, looked totally different than anything I could have shot in the States. This year I've been shooting a lot in Stellenbosch, which has some of the most pristine countryside I've seen. Can't wait to shoot me some 4k stock footage!
Cam Diver, I'd like to hear more about your plans. I'm organizing some nature trips myself for archival shooting.
Mardis Gras, what are the plans for number 617?
One other questions maybe someone else can answer out there. I'm gonna buy my RED in Oregon, the state where I live and where we somehow still don't pay no sales tax. Does anyone know what will happen with customs when one brings $40,000 worth of cine equipment into SA? I've talked with some import guy that says there's no duty charge, but there will be a 14% charge that I would only get back once I eventually leave the country. He didn't seem one hundred percent though.
Anyway, I hope we can all stay in touch, as it will be good to build a network and know who can do what and who has what equipment. BTW, anyone interested might check out www.4khub.co.za. Still small but with potential.

Caleb,
Looks like I'm gonna be based in Durban to work on Tiger Sharks for around 6 months. I may need to go back down to False Bay for some filler stuff on the White Sharks and their breaching behavior in that neck of the woods. Also there are ongoing projects that I have been asked to evaluate both for the department of NG that I'm under commission with and another source. All in all I think I'll be seeing a lot more of Africa in the coming years.
Its screaming to be done in RED but still in negotiations with the powers that be for that.
Cheers,
Mark

Hey Mardi Gras. We are based in Cape Town and Joburg, depending on where the work is. We do mostly underwater filming, currently using a Z1 and Gates housing, but looking forward to the change to RED next year Feb.
