I am very curious to know whether or not there is a RED or two present in the Bay Area whose keeper would be willing to bring out to demonstrate for interested parties.

As far as I know there is no Red owner living in the SF Bay Area who have taken delivery of their cameras just yet. I believe there will be some soon.

Check out this thread of Nor Cal RedHeads. I'm on the Monterey Peninsula but I've been in contact with some Bay area people who are awaiting delivery on their cameras. Mine should be here by June. It would be great for owners to get together once we have our cameras.

Thanks Bob, Good thread. I am expecting my cam about May or June as well. My studio does training vids, corporate vids and a lot of 3D animation and special F/X.
Looking to see how we can all be of service in this locale.

That is good news!
As cameras become available, I am sure there is much we can learn from each other.
I would be willing to host meetings here in the Napa Valley. I have a lab with 30 computers, projector and Internet that we could use.

Hey Donatello,
I was at LART and have quite a bit of knowledge as to the post end of things are concerned. I live in Sacramento but work in Palo Alto CA. I would be happy to help you out on the post end if you have any questions and would love to come out and shoot tests with you.

Donatello and Mike,
I'd be very interested in working with you guys on some tests and to just get some hands-on experience.
I'm at CES trough the 9th. Probably the best day for me would be Friday the 11th, or could do the 10th.
Would love to do some lens tests with the 18-50. There are a couple of other folks I rent from that are reservation holders and have zeiss primes we could do some comparison tests on. I also have some Zacutto stuff we can play with to see if any of that may be useful. I have Arri MB20 II ordered that should be arriving any day. As for Post, we have 3 HD Final Cut edit bays with a Sony BVW 5500 HDCAM SR recorder. So we could also pop over there (San Francisco) and do some post work. That's the one area I need to do a little homework on, and would like to do some Redcine/FCP/Color experiments.
Let me know so I can get in touch with my associates with lenses...
Thanks for the offer!

Donnatello,
I also ordered the 18-50 and would love to bring a drive and come away with some footage using that lens. It would also really go a long way towards studying our workflow.
Thanks for the opp to check out your baby. Friday the 11th would work for me as well or the 10th if it works out that way.

I just discovered this San Francisco Bay Area group; nice to have a group a little more localized than Northern California!
I'm RED #1693 here on the Oakland/Emeryville border; according to the last schedule I saw, my camera should arrive somewhere end of February - March.
I'm currently remodeling my building trying to get my stage reopened. It will be green/blue screen oriented for those of you interested in doing visual EFX. Hopefully the stage will be done this winter/spring and could be a good meeting place for a user group.
Donatello: I didn't get your email, but got your phone message; tried to call you and left message. I can get together with you pretty much anytime, but Jan. 6th (tomorrow!) would be ideal. I have an AJA I/O HD that would be of interest in testing with RED for a workflow possibility. I have a variety of standard Arri mount primes with a PL adaptor (ranging from 10mm to 500mm) that I'd like to try. If you have the RED 15mm rod adaptor, I'd like to see how well it interfaces with my RedRock Follow Focus. Thanks so much for offering access to your RED for something like this. Cheers!

I have been in contact with Donatello and am viewing the #103 cam on Thursday the 10th. I am also setting up for chroma key stage in my studio. Would love a chance to talk so maybe you can come on the 10th. Donatellos said it was still open and I was the only one so would be happy to share the slot with you at 10AM.

Hell Yeah! We have to have a Bay Area RED user group!!!! Both Lee Utterbach and Videofax rental houses will be getting their camera's in the next week or so. Mike Burton and I will be hanging with Donatello this week to help those in the Bay with RED workflow and data management. There are alot of unique needs the Bay has and having a user group would be awesome as issues are still being worked out. I'm stoked to work with build 12 as Mike Burton and I dealt with 9,10 & 11 at LART in December.
So will we be BART????? Bay Area Red Testers hahahaha......

Bay Area! I'm looking to get back into film/cinema to get some more experience since I've been out of it for a while. I'm located in the East Bay and am looking for user groups/production groups to work with and network with. Any ideas?
(I'm not a Red owner or reservation holder, but am willing and more that motivated to assist in any capacity on any Red Projects in the Bay area. I'm a software engineer by day and practice DIT and AC roles in low budget HD productions.)

Welcome rockoblm!
My cam won't come until maybe May or June depending on how schedule of shipping goes.
I did get a chance to spend some time with #103 (Thanks again Donatello!).
The camera is incredible. We definiteley need to get the networking up and running for the Bay Area users.
Until my camera gets in, I am working hard on developing contacts for work.
I am interested in doing aerial work and would love to get in contact with anyone that flies choppers that would like to put together a flight team. I fly fixed wing and plan to work with that but helicopter work is much more flexible.
Anyway, at some point we should see about a users group meeting for some RED tech talk!

Hi all. This is my first time posting on the boards. Just wanted to say a quick "hello" to the other RED users in the SF Bay Area. I'm looking forward to meeting with you.
I'm a producer in San Francisco with an interest in social narratives and docs and a film professor at Pacific Union College in the Napa Valley. My RED #2972 is scheduled for delivery sometime around June (fingers crossed).
I was out of town last weekend, but did anyone make it to the Digital Cinema Society meeting in Sunnyvale? How was it? I'm interested in some of the workflow options that were discussed. Anyone know if they're posting clips from the event on their website? I thought I read they were going to do that.
Any other RED events in Bay Area coming up?

I was at the Sunnyvale DCS event on March 1. It was videotaped and they said it would be available in their video library (I don't know if that's online- maybe not). I didn't take any notes- just from memory:
James Mathers, the DCS president, had his Red there along with a big lens (mentioned it was 3x the price of the Red body) and did a quick demo. They had a large Barco 720p (?) projector with an intermittent vertical scaling problem and odd color, but the demo clip looked nice anyway. James is not a red "fanboy"- he mentioned that he preferred to shoot film, because it looks better- but nevertheless he seemed happy enough with his camera. He lights and exposes the same way he did for ISO 320 film.
Torrey from Silverado Systems also presented, they brought a Red as well. They have done some number, 6 or more, projects so far already on Red. One of them (Torrey or James, I forget) was asked several times if they'd had any problems with the hard drive dropping frames or the rolling shutter causing image troubles, and the answer was no. Torrey showed a short ("Paranoid") that was completed in just a few days.
There seemed like a good crowd there, maybe 75-100 people? I didn't count. Unfortunately I had to leave early so I missed the workflow presentation. I saw a very brief demo of Red Alert and Red Cine, but that info is already available online. I think they had Scratch there, but maybe that was after I left. I think around $50k+ was mentioned for Scratch but I wasn't paying attention because that's way out of my ballpark.
To tell the truth, if you've been following Reduser closely, I don't think you'd find much really new at the meeting. Probably this type of event is most useful for networking, and to see a Red in person if you haven't yet. Well, they had cookies and some t-shirts from the site host, NetApp.
Alan Skinner
03-05-2008, 11:25 AM
Ditto What jbeale said.
I also had to leave early so missed the workflow and scratch info but scratch is out of my budget (especially since I am hocking "the baby shoes" to get my RED) :)
I agree that since I have been reading the reduser.net forum avidly for weeks now, I did not receive any new information. Since I already had the chance to see and play with a RED cam (thanks again Donatello!) there was not a lot of new information for me. Networking possibilities were maybe the most likely value to attending but since I had to leave early, that did not work out. Also, since I am trying to diet, I did not take advantage of the cookies either. :)

Hey Stepheneyer,
You have the camera just before mine. We should be gettin them about the same day!
Keep an eye on the user group thread, we are forming a Bay Area/NorCal group and should probably talk about meeting places and times (as soon as someone has a camera to bring along, can't really see everyone sitting around just talking about it) :)
stepheneyer
03-05-2008, 08:04 PM
jbeale - Thanks for the recap on the DCS event. Sounds like with 75-100 people there that it might have been easier to get your hands on the cookies than the camera. : ) I'll check the DCS website later to see if they post the clips from the meeting. Another downer is that Scratch is a PC only solution. I'm interested in learning more about any FCP workflows that are working well. I'll continue to check the threads for more info as well.
Verticeus - Yes, I saw that we're both having to learn the art of patience this Spring. I'll keep an eye out for any Bay Area/NorCal group notices. Thanks!

I have my Red in SF now and you can rent it tomorrow ... you can pm, call, or email. ;-) There are plenty around today (I believe nine total I was told) in the immediate SF Bay Area in rental houses and with owner ops.
As for FCP workflow, RedTrip has been working for me for music videos and commercials. I've been using a film-like workflow by editing the proxies and coloring/rendering just the final. But it takes a little finesse and doesn't like speed changes created in FCP (which seem to be in every project). Of course, we have ways of dealing with such things. I think this camera involves a much tighter bond between production and post.
Always available if you want to talk it out ... or check it out.

DCS is a great organization for those who work in the digital space.
I find that its not the Cine guys that who have the trouble its the Post folks who need the help and don't like beta programs because they neither have the time or the money to wait/trouble shoot the RED workflow.

Quick question, guys, as an owner/operator, do I need a business license to rent my equipment?
donatello b
04-03-2008, 10:11 PM
" in general" ..
you probably should have one - depends on your city & county ...
you may need FEDERAL ID # ( can get it online within minutes) ..note if somebody pays you $$ ( over $600 in a year) they'll need either your soical sercuity # or your Fed ID # unless you are set up as a corp, LLC, limited partnership ...
and you might need to set up account with the Cailfornia state board of equalization ?? ... basically if you didn't pay sales tax when you bought equipment then you have to charge sales tax to customers that rent it ...
i'm over across the bay in costra costa county .. i have no business license .. do have a FED ID and a account with CA state board of equalization ...
have a chat with a accountant for the fine details ...
friera
04-04-2008, 02:23 PM
Will I be able to charge rental fees for my equipments as part of my service as a camera operator, when working with a big budget production without a business license?
donatello b
04-04-2008, 05:01 PM
IMO - YES ( no business license)
usually in Cailf when crew works on a big show they are hired as a employee's ... many then rent/charge for their tools/equipment ... many (crew) prefer the rental be under a business name ( which could also be their real name) - you should speak with a accountant or business lawyer ..
now if i was only renting to productions that i work on i would NOT get a local business license but would get a fed ID for equipment rental( may or may not be tax advantages to you having rental under business vs. individual ) ....
IMO do NOT include the rental with your day rate - break it down into rental rate & labor rate ....

Myself and Mike Burton have been doing 4k + Raw Consulting ( not just Red) for Bay Area production companies and each project has been a whole new can of worms. AppleProHQ has been the preferred codec since most Post houses don't have 4:4:4 monitoring or the 320MB/s thuroughput for DPX files.
Believe me the Cine folks have no problem with this new technology.Editors have been using the proxy files which are tried and true method but most commercial production and post production companies are unwilling to take the time and money on a commercial project to experiment with full end-to-end commercial production this is were we come in and design the best workflow for the project.

I can't say for sure if there are or are not any upcoming red-centered events, but indeed there should be. It seems most local rental houses have their reds (we just got ours about a month ago!), and I know taht some "consultant" friends of mine are slated to soon recieve theirs. In light of that, bay area red users should start to set something up regularly so that all users can come and meet fellow owners, share the red love, and talk about various problems and technical snafus and also showcase recent projects and whatnot, go out for test shoots, just an all around RED group i guess is the simplest way to put it. I don't want to speak for "the big man" a.k.a boss man but I know he's expressed an interest in meet ups with bay area users as well. That being said, would people be intersted in a meeting of sorts in early to mid april?

Is anyone shooting anything with the RED One around the SF Bay Area?Especially a production that can use a PA on the sets?
I would also love to get a chance to peek over the shoulders of the post workflow.
I am planning a production to be shot with the RED One and want to get a feel for a production using it.
Thanks for your time.

I'd like to organize a RED Demo Day in San Francisco sometime soon (probably Oct./Nov.) to show off the RED to those in the area who may not have gotten their hands on one yet and would like to get to know some of the RED owners in the area. We could talk about setup, workflow, etc., and provide information about our services.
I'm thinking of hosting it in one of the rooms at Fort Mason (lots of parking) and trying to coordinate to get the word out about it through the San Francisco Film Society, Scary Cow Film Co-op, and other indie film organizations.
If anyone is interested and would like to help plan this and get involved, please let me know.
Thanks!

Cool stuff; it would be cool to have some RED demos at the various Bay Area cinema programs; most of them tend to be on the art/16mm side of the spectrum, but the more you know in this business the better.

I propose that we try to do the meeting soon. I would like to think that #2973 will be in my hands soon.

Well, it has finally become real! I have number #2973 in my hot little hands! (one number after yours!)
Let's do some kind of pow wow and I like the idea of Fort Mason. I can help with some logistics and food and the like. I will be bringing my RED for others to get a chance to see and all. If we decide to make an association around the North Bay as a user group, I own web hosting and video streaming services. I can host a local user group site for free with a forum and all.
My "sticks" should be here to go with the cam in the next week or so. My Birger mount and my Redrock matte box is on order. I will bring what I have.
Let's do it!

Hi SF Bay area Red users. I wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I just joined the Reduser forum. I'm not a Red owner or have a reservation yet. I've been making videos for less than a year and had no prior education or professional experience with video making. Video making and editing is a serious hobby of mine. I don't intend to make it a business, just a creative outlet. I'd like to offer my time to Red owners and users who are looking for an assistant. I'd like to learn more about the Red camera before I place a reservation.

Hey fellas,
Not sure what I would be able to contribute to a meeting (I am but a humble DVX shooter thus far) but I'd love to get some RED experience even if its just looking through the viewfinder and learning how to power her up and all that jazz. I've never shot film either or have owned a nice still camera so it would be a valuable learning experience for me. I'd be free typically on Saturdays, but November 1st is already out for me. I also wouldn't mind waiting a bit either.

Absolutely not :) And BTW, as someone who never shot on anything more complicated than MiniDV tape, I feel like the transition to RED has been rather effortless. Now, ok, that could very well be because I've spent countless hours on this silly message board for the last 18 months, but still, it's amazing to me at even a hobbyist as myself can own, use and understand such an awesome tool. I'm indebted to the RED folks :) Looking forward to meeting you, Craig.

Like it says I want to Rent a lens for 4 hours sometime next week. I have a complete set of Canon glass that has been waiting for that stupid Birger mount that I am yet to receive. We are shooting a corporate video for Santa Clara County and they want to shoot 2 more interviews and I need a lens for only a few hours on 10-28 or 29. I will pay 150 cash. Normally we rent from Indie Rentals but in the middle of the week it costs us a lot because with the overnighting back and forth we have to rent for 2 or 3 days. anyway please call or email or IM me if anyone wants to rent me the lens for the day and is in the area. I own #759 and have shot Tons of footage but we're still waiting for this whole Birger thing to pan out and so like many otheres we're ovber a barrel for another week or two.

Kennan,
I downloaded the hi-rez version of your Alaska work! Awesome man!
We would not discriminate. You are not too far as long as you can make it up!
I propose we look to second week of December to meet or I am going to have to go to January.
Anyone else in?
We will need a venue and an agenda.
Would be happy to host here in Napa if folks want to make the trip. Other ideas were Fort Mason SF and?.....................
Time for a meeting to ratify the SFBay RED users group!
I will create and host a blog/chat type website for us.
A bottle of my own wine (which just got pressed last weekend!) to the best domain name for the SFBay RED users website. Let's see some good submissions.

R1# 04704 is now home. The 11/13 announcements have kinda dampened my excitement. But the BIG let down is, I am stranded without glass. My shipment of the Cooke 25-250 I ordered didn't come through as expected and I probably won't have it until another 10 days or so... :ranting2:
Here is my plea, can anyone afford to lend me a PL mount lens (any length, any speed) for a quick check. :help:
I can drive over with my kit and shoot under your supervision, over a cuppa coffee. A couple of minutes worth of footage is good for now.
Thanks,

I am kind of in the same boat as this guy. I was looking to shoot some Visual Effects compositing test shots next week with a friend who attends the Academy of Art (we were going to make use of their green screen studio) using my HVX200, however some buttons decided to stop working. Unfortunately the Academy only loans HVX's to grad students, don't even think about the Red camera.
I was hoping a Red user here would be down to help as fill in for a day or two tops (we are willing to accomodate your schedule). Keep in mind we are students, while we can throw a few greenbacks your way for gas and troubles, 500 a day is simply out of our budget.
If you have reservations I understand being the owner of a decent (though admittedly not nearly as hot) camera. However feel free to ask me questions or if you want to meet up with me in person beforehand (I am based out of San Jose though I attend classes at Berkeley, and my Academy friend is in Foster City).
The only thing else I can offer is our labor in exchange. I've done some grip work and on set assistance (AC and PA). He's done some AC work, and is working towards a Visual Effects compositing and lighting background. I will be gone after the next week but my friend can get you access to the greenscreen studio in the future (from what I'm told every wall including the floor is green, not sure about ceiling.)
In addition I have a tripod and p2 card along with a hvx200 that only records but does not capture and will need fixing. I know I know. That's like a lightweight offering to be a heavyweight's bodyguard, but I want you know this isn't some hit and run demand for favors. I am a man of my word and my labor is my currency.
