A quick question:
Does the RED bottom plate fit this ARRI K4.54362 dovetail plate?
http://www.filmtools.com/arri-baseplate.html
I'm considering the ARRI plate for the top of my O'Conner 1030. (I'm presuming I can bolt the 1030 quick-release plate on the bottom of the ARRI dovetail. I have a question pending about that with FilmTools.)

the Red ARRI 15mm and 19mm plates fit the dovetail.. but the standard red baseplate does not.

Ah ha! Thanks for the swift reply Jarred. Do you ever sleep?
Sounds like a patent issue to me. ;-)
It would be cool to have a simple baseplate dovetail (without the nice shoulder rest) to keep on tripod heads and on the camera cart mount. Then we are merely sliding the camera bottom plate from shoulder, to sticks, to cart without tools.
I bet my 1030 quick-release plate could simply stay on the bottom of the shoulder dovetail without interfering with the shoulder pad. I remember from a past thread, however, that there is only one bolt hole on the underside of the shoulder dovetail. If so, it could certainly use another.
The RED shoulder dovetail is only $550. Still less than that ARRI plate I was considering. I could just get another to provide a mounting point on the camera cart!

not a patent issue, it just works different and the lens height is different from base to sensor.
Our dovetail is just a negative dovetail, there is no locking mechanism. So even if you could shoehorn your dovetail into the slot, there would be no way to lock it down.

The 15mm base plate from ET is worth every penny, very well made and light weight. I'm sure the 19mm is the same if that's what you prefer.

that would be the 15mm ET base plate from RED.

Element Technica also makes an Arri sliding dovetail, I've got one strapped to my 2060 right now.
It's all black, has excellent build quality, and it only cost me $400.
Give Stephen from ET a call if you're interested...(310)913-5251

Jarred, in pictures, I note a locking mechanism on the shoulder dovetail instead of camera bottom plate. Right?
If so, then an extra shoulder dovetail is in order.
BTW, you could avoid a lot of extra time answering questions on reduser.net if you added some of this verbiage to the red.com store pages. (Not that I mind your excellent support. You would probably field just as many questions either way. :turned:)

The RED shoulder dovetail is not the proper size to slide into an Arri baseplate.
If RED wanted to go that route, they'd have to rebuild both the RED bottom plate as well as the RED shoulder dovetail.....probably not gonna happen.
Just pick up an ET / RED Arri base plate and wait for their brand of shoulder dovetails to be released, or shop around for current Arri shoulder dovetails.

Would've been great if you built the RED backbone plate to Arri specs in the first place, any idea if this is in the near future...if so...I want to do an exchange! :sarcasm:

No, I mean I'll have one RED bottom plate and two RED shoulder dovetails; one for my shoulder/sticks (with the 1030 quick-release plate attached) and one affixed to a custom hard-point on my camera cart. That way, my a.c. has tool free transfers between shoulder, sticks, and cart.

You are better off with the RED Arri Base Plate and two Arri dovetails. The RED shoulder dovetail raises the camera 1.5" higher.

I've not doubt of it but the price gets a bit steeper real fast. $900 ARRI base plate, $800 for two ARRI dovetails... in addition to the RED base package. --or-- add one $550 RED shoulder dovetail for now and deal with the extra height.
I'm in nickle-and-dime territory now.
Perhaps later.

the Red cheeseplate fits into the Red bottom plate too so you dont need the whole dovetail system if you dont want it ( some heads like the 2060 have their own sliding system) and that gets you around the extra height that the shoulder plate brings.

Do you need the Red baseplate to put on the side handles or what used to be called the Red Cage?

no, but you need 19mm rods top and bottom. So the 19mm Arri Base works also

yes.. there are two connections for the side arms, one for the top rail and one for the bottom rails.

Has anyone seen the Red Shoulder Dovetail? From all of the images I've seen of the Red handheld, I haven't seen a shoulder pad on.

Now, if there were a cheese plate that had the shoulder dovetail's locking mechanism...:whistling:
Might be time for me to acquire that metal-working lathe/drill I've been considering -- and the requisite four years of education needed to use it.
