Hey guys,

My camera should be arriving in the next 6-8 weeks or so and we are currently getting financing together.

I'm at a loss as to whether I should buy the 2 zooms and the 300mm now, or whether the prime set is close on the horizon. We are shooting mainly feature films with the rig and would much prefer a prime set, but I don't really want to get a set of used zeiss's as they are hard to come by and I'd also rather use new glass.

I know nothing has really been said about the prime set availability - and I know you have your hands full !! So just thought I'd pose the question in case.

Thanks !
Seth.

When it comes to optics there is never any reason to buy something you can't test. Renting PL mount glass is a good way to go for a little bit, until you know exactly what you want, and what the market is like for various types of glass. It's likely the cine prime prices are going to continue to climb in the coming months. But then if Red and Optar deliver on their promises, the prices might stabilize again.

Thanks iBloom, much appreciated.

This is what we are planning to do currently. The problem is that we have a bunch on jobs lined up and renting the various sets just to test is going to be a problem because it will take weeks/months to find and get a set of Zeiss primes over to us in Aus once we do decide to buy (providing we can find them at all), and we really need to get a jump on this.

The real problem though is that we won't be able to rent the RED Zoom to test here (at least not for a while), so all I'll be able to test are the Zeiss Standards and Superspeeds.

I am also worried about price. I agree that prices are going to continue to climp and I only have a limited budget, so I'd love to grab a set of primes now, if I can find them, and if I can establish that they'll likely do what I need. I also have to spend my cash in one go (tax complications).

Also, I figure any feedback is useful anyhow..

Cheers,
Seth.

Hi,

I am sure if the Red lens was not good enough for you you could get a refund.

Red has been very accommodating with this.

Evin,

I'm just wondering... how accomodating?

As I was checking out from the Red Store, I noticed in the purchase agreement that a 30% restocking fee can be applied to anything you send back. Do you know if this is being enforced with the 18-50 lens?

Hi Thor,

I think you would have read about it here & elsewhere. if it was.

I have heard from a few people that they were able to either return or exchange their lenses and that Red was very gracious about it in every instance. This was all hearsay so don't count my words as gospel. Bear in mind though that as more and more cameras go out it becomes increasingly hard for Red to have such a hands on approach, so the earlier you try it the better.

Seth, Give Paul Jackson a ring in the PV Sydney office. He may be able to help with various PL mount lens options and rentals for testing. We have supplied lenses here in NZ for a few RED Jobs, even supplied some gear for the "little test shoot" in Wellington last year.

If its of any help I just started a thread with a bunch of Cooke lens prices in it. But I hear ya good glass ain't cheap. I reckon you should get the Zooms, they are quite good and more useful than a straight up prime set will be. Once you have them your covered until you can pull together a good set of Cooke's, Zeiss's or what ever it might be. And don't go past the nikons, they are nice kit and might be just what you need in the interim before you make a million bucks and buy every lens under the sun.

Thanks Lachlan,

I actually run a set of Nikkor primes on our Z1+M2 Redrock setup, the old Nikkor glass in the silver metal housing rocks !

Seth.
