Audio while overcranking?

Just wondering what happens to the audio when your running offspeed? Is it like...
A) The varicam. Audio is recorded no matter what the framerate. or...
B) HVX 200. Audio drops out when the framerate is anything other than default.

This would be crucial in deciding whether or not to record audio on-camera or seperately for me.

It is disabled when in varispeed - at least when I tested the build.

I prefer the Varicam recording method. Understandably the audio will be out of sync but it can be quite useful in post as a basis for a "slow-mo" sound effect.

I agree--I have used this audio in mixes. Don't some other (smaller) cameras record during off speed shooting as well?

the Red Operations Manual v.12, p.26 says audio is disabled when in varispeed.
I don't know why exactly, but obviously it simplifies some firmware & software issues, and probably affects to some extent the maximum framerate. (max fps would probably be a bit lower if the system had to handle audio also).

When all else fails, read the manual. Probably should have done that before starting this post...Oh well.

It would be helpful if Audio was still recorded somewhere no matter what the framerate. That's one of the things I really like about shooing on the varicam and really miss shooting on the HVX.

If I remember right, the original plan was to have it record audio during overcranking. I sure hope it ends up being that way.

The reason the Varicam does record audio is because the recording is ALWAYS 60 fps, irrespective of the image capture rate. So as far as the tape recording section is concerned its a normal speed recording. Downside to that is there are often lots of redundant frames to get rid of, and timecode can get very messed up.

RED-ONE instead runs the entire camera faster or slower to capture the images. The byproduct of that is there are no redundant frames, you get to see instant slow motion effects on playback and the timecode is always correct. But there is no audio recording when in timelapse or varispeed.

And indeed, the P2 cameras when run off-speed at "native" recording rates (i.e., no duplicate frames) will not record audio.
