Glad to see everyone settling into the new home!

The logo consists of a circular linished stainless steel, with 4 symbolic rivets appearing on the letters representing the 4k. Instead of going for 4k, the K becomes the feature character with a denomination of 4 in the corner. This would allow for future successors to the red camera (6k , 8k etc) without tying the number 4 too much to the redusers.net brand identity.

Just a first mockup draft, but I'll rework some more. Jarred, could we have a flash embedding enabled on the forum? Id like to try out something in flash (an interactive aperture).

Cheers

Nice looking work there ace!

Not sure I like the K so dominant in the name - it almost looks like part of the name. Perhaps expand the K so it's as high as the main text and the slogan - and srink & center the slogan uncer the "reduser"

Totally kicking textures though!

Man those are nice! I especially like the last one.

I feel the "brushed" texture on the iris should be broken up between pieces - the brushes continuing over the gaps looks a little strange as it wouldn't be made from one piece.
... then again, there is no iris in RED!

Also, on a technical note: The CF texture is hard to read on some LCD monitors.

Thanks Mikko. I thought lenses had apertures? The CF I agree might be too much. Heres an alternative ive mocked up which seems more appropriate to the forum:.. Someone pass the Redahol.

Here's an interesting fact about use of fonts in logo's... If you alter the shape of the font from the original then you don't need to actually own the copyright to use that font because it has been modified and is classed as a new font. That said they are pretty cheap nowadays anyway so it's fairly irrelevent. But if for example you were handed an entire font foundry on disk and put them on your computer and then proceeded to make logos left right and centre you'd only have to modify the font's shape ever so slightly in order not to fork out for any of the fonts and it's perfectly legal... naff all to do with cameras though so I'll shut up!

Sure but i feel it could be important to retain the juxtaposition of traditional cinematography with the new digital medium. It makes a good contrast that grounds the digital side a little. I don't know, gives a bit of legitimacy to the word "digital cinema".

That said, I really like the simplicity of this one as well.

PaulClements
12-28-2006, 09:40 AM
Here's my attempt - It's pretty simple really, although took alot longer to make than one might actually think, it wasn't just a copy and paste job! The Red background of the RED is the sphere of the red logo and the two words of course use the logo's from RED and DVXUSER combined. Personally I think it's important to keep a sense of identity and continuity between any "USER" website, and therefore it just seems a natural logo to use. Anything else wouldn't quite seem right in my opinion - Some might argue that's a bit boring but if the look and feel of the forums are to remain then I don't see why the identity in the logo shouldn't either.

This version is a compressed 128 color GIF with transparencies for background images at 5.72kb to be friendly on download speeds:

http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/17514/1167326918.gif

This is a demonstration of it on a black background and on the site at the moment:

PaulClements
12-28-2006, 09:54 AM
Slightly modified - The slant beneath the D has been antialiased and the grey gradient of the USER text is a bit smoother with less interlacing going on. Also a little notch of grey above the R has been lightened... what can I say I'm a bit of a perfectionist :p

Also it's 256 color transparent gif with 100% diffusion

I don't think that is quite right. I seem to recall that you can't just edit the data in a font, you would have to redraw it from scratch. In the UK, at least, the actual shape of the letters have copyright themselves too. So if the font you are using as the basis for your redrawing is in copyright you have to redesign it signifcantly. This is the reason the font Arial looks so awful, it's Monotypes dodgy reworking of Linotypes Helvetica. It is also the reason Linotype is constantly suing companies who rip off their fonts, rename them and sell them on as something else.

The use of commercial fonts in logos is one of those areas that is a bit grey. I think it is usually against the terms of the font license but no one is going to come after you unless you are a big fish.

You are right in that you cannot reshape a font and sell it on. I was talking about editing the font used in a logo, if it isn't using the original shape setout in the font or variation of that font then you do not need to own the copyright to include it in your font... It was one of the few things I remember from my Typography and Graphic communication degree lol, if it has changed in the last 4 or 5 years then my bad but I very much doubt it. Linotype sue people who repackage their fonts and sell as their own for profit, not those who reshape them for use in logo's.

When you linish stainless steel radially, the brush pattern for each sheet of steel reflects the light at the same angle regardless of how its rotated. Think of dial tops on high end stereos. Rotating the gradients would be physically incorrect. since each letter is cut out of its own sheet of brushed steel, you get the identical reflection pattern!

Not entirely true. Line up 4 dials in a row. Each dial from the same angle would look exactly the same (assuming the exact same groove frequency) but each one is at a different angle to the viewer, even if it's slight.

Elcurado, what did you do to design the splattery background? Was that freehand?

But you can framing and crop the image as you prefer. Or resize.
It's like shooting 4K...

You can scan a real ink spot, then use Freehand to vectorize (I have followed this way for years).
You can achieve some good effects with an old photocopier.
Or simply go to istockphoto.com and search for some grunge artworks... :)

Really great work Elcurado. On the dvxuser site, in the RED News section-(RED Titanium 'R'twork - Post your R photos thread), you had something similar ( read-equally badass!) on your nice apple lcds. I am sure that I am not the only one who would love to see it ( use it as a background--- and drool...).

Oh, yes!.
Give me just the time to change the old RED logo with the new one...

And please help me with my poor english, on that artwork I wrote:

RED. Real Emotions Digitized.

It's correct? There are any sense in this sentence? (The Italian version was ok... ).

Hey my man, I like it any language.:D Seriously though, I think it works quite well and I understand it.

I just got the adobe creative suite (CS1-free from a friend who is up-grading) and I have alot to learn. These works are inspirational.:) Any more sites or info from anyone is greatly appreciated.

Cheers- Andrew

Hey Andrew:

You can download here a 3000x3000 jpg with the new version of that artwork:

http://www.e-motion.tv/clientsection/Redtest_02.zip

And here the same jpg without the sentence:

If you need a custom crop (1600x1200 - 1920x1080 - 1024x768...), just ask.

Corrado, thanks for taking the time. I really dig my new background and I am sure that I am not the only one here. I will download the rest (dial-up/ yeah I am a loser, evidently you can't get high speed if you live in a Yurt) tonight while I work.

Yeah thanks I hate to say it but it is such a nice back ground that good ole Scarlett Johansson going to have to take a back seat for awhile.

Ace, I like your designs. What font are you using for "Digital Cinema Community"? It's very nice and clean.

One of my favourite fonts. Futura (light). One of the many legacies of the german Bauhaus design movement in the late 1920's.

Alright! Somebody finally said something about mine! But I personally do not like it. I'm in favor of Elcurado and David Fairbanks's "spy-like" logo. Or Ace's "Futuristic-Industrial" logo.

I want to try to make another one but I won't be able to beat them. And I don't have all the nice fonts that Ace does.

Ace = Acehole not Acelink.
