Anyone tried to work off a qnap or synology raid? or is it only good for backups? Im thinking of hook up the mac pro directly to the esata port. Not planing to use the ether ports to the workstation.

I'm under the impression that you can't use the eSATA port like that on QNAP's NAS-solutions. As far as I know the port is only for adding eSATA drives to the NAS.

Yes, the eSata is for adding drives to quickly get files on and off the NAS. They're primarily network boxes. I use my Synology NAS over gigE and it works great for my needs. I don't use them for editing, but you can pretty decent speed off them.
