View Full Version : Renting to save from Selling?

So, I've got a camera that's up for sale (#728), and I'm currently in the process of completing a deal with someone who's offered to buy it. But, in the off chance that the deal falls through I was thinking about renting it out instead of selling it to the next available bidder. I've had this change of heart because I just found an investor who's willing to front me the money to afford the camera. But, basically, he wants to know that there is significant demand for the camera as a rental unit and that the risk of holding onto the camera would be negligible.

So, if any of you would be interested in renting a RedOne body for an extended period of time (one-month minimum), private message me with your info and your needs (for how long you'd need to rent it, soonest date you'd need it, how much you'd be willing to pay, where you'd be shooting, and whether you can show proof of insurance and a responsible crew). Also, please indicate whether you'd need two bodies or can get by using just one body.

Even if the deal on #728 goes through, I'd still be left with the second camera and I might be able to rent that one out. Both cameras are expected to ship in February, both are in the 700's. Also, if you absolutely need two or more cameras and I find myself only owning the one, then I might be able to facilitate a collective rental that incorporates my camera along with other Red owner's cameras.

P.S. - I am open to shipping the camera to foreign locations, but only if the production has solid references, insurance, and the rental period is for an extended period of time. From a convenience perspective, I'd rather rent to people on the West coast (USA) and British Columbia. Also, I can't guarantee that the camera will work perfectly for your shoot (really, nobody can guarantee something like that), so you'd have to get insurance to protect yourself from production delays and if you absolutely need a backup camera then you'd want to arrange for a multi-camera rental.

P.P.S. - I'd have posted this in the rental section, but apparently that section is only for people who already have a camera physically in their possession. Which seems kind of goofy to me since most filmmakers like to plan ahead by several months.

I might be psychic - just after I posted this thread the pending sale of #728 fell apart. So it looks like I might definitely have two cameras available for rental in February, which will mean that I can provide both the primary and a backup camera if you rent through me. So, anyway, factor in this new bit of information into your rental needs. This is sort of exciting, because the more I think about it the easier everything becomes when there are two cameras on set!

For now, the best contact would be mark@bonphotos.com. Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll finish building a rental website, including the creation of a dedicated email address for all things rental related.
