Hi all.
I have some red clips that open fine in red alert but I can't seem to get red cine working.
I have a macbook (intel not pro) and 2Gb of RAM. running 10.4.11.
I get a grey screen on a clip in the bottom timeline and then a black screen in the larger viewer or a blue screen. I gather the graphics display in my mac isn't up to it ? Thought maybe not given red alert works.....

Redcine is heavily GPU-dependent and The MacBook (non-Pro) doesn't have a dedicated GPU. Red Alert! works because it uses software decoding, I believe.
Only Red (or, I suppose, Assimilate) knows for sure, but it seems likely that Redcine isn't ever going to support systems that don't have dedicated graphics.

You need a decent graphics card for REDCINE and the macbook doesn't have one (sorry). The macbook pro does (if you have one with an ATI in it).
For Windows we advice a modern NVidia board (don't need a quadro) and for OS X a modern ATI one.
Chris: we already support (mac) systems without a modern GPU through RED ALERT. As with everything we're carefully evaluating what works and doesn't work. As you've seen from RED before we're not afraid to throw things out the window if they don't work :)

The macbook pro does (if you have one with an ATI in it).
Since it's not actually possible to get a Macbook Pro with an ATI chip set (I don't think), then I think Red needs to get on the ball with full Mac Nvidia support.

Older Macbook Pro's have an ATI. Mine does.
The problem is not that we need to get "on the ball" with full Mac Nvidia support. Nvidia is the better card for this sort of thing which is why it's our preferred card under Windows.
Under Mac the problem is in the drivers of the Nvidia boards. This driver is being developed by Apple (not Nvidia or us) and it's about 3 times slower when processing 4K than the ATI X1900 (Mac Pro).
Not much we can do about that. For serious work on a Mac I would advice someone to go with a 4 or 8-core Mac Pro system anyway. For these you can get the X1900 ATI card and you'll be fine.
If you must use a Macbook (Pro) that doesn't have an ATI use RED ALERT or the QuickTime codec for watching footage etc.

This MacBook Pro has a GeForce 8600M GT. Performance is not amazing, but it's good enough that the machine will be useful to us on-set. Playback is still smoother in RedCine than in the (non-GPU-accelerated) Red Alert.
(For the office, we're planning to buy a shiny new Mac Pro shortly after Apple announces them.)

A quick Google search turns up this 15.4" 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro/ ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 combo at MacMall:

What if we install XP in an intel macbook pro? Since you said the problem is in the OS drivers, do we get rid of it and redcine goes fast?

My 1 year old MacBook Pro (ATI Radeon X1600), will run it no problem, but it is SLOW! If you need to do a lot of conversion get a kick ass tower!

A MacBook (Pro) will just not scream as a Mac Pro does. For serious work you want to get the bad ass tower. Laptop is fine for preview or lower res work.
Obviously this will change more and more as we improve performance and the laptops keep improving as well

Yes - works fine (slower than on a workstation but this is no surprise) except for the dpx-timecode trouble i have - but I donīt think that this is caused by the macbook

does installing XP on your intel macbook require any kind of specific installation or prep work, such as opening a new user/account for a new OS?
