I HAVE A DREAM
What I'll "WANT TO" see in the RED NAB 2007 Booth.
What do you wanta see????
4K projection so big you can see it from the Sony booth!
Big stack of cameras say 1151 of them ready to deliver. (why that number?)
Several RED Cameras in working displays. Nice if we can set in, otherwise maybe we can direct the operators: all the demo cameras wired to the 4K projector switched so one after the other we see the live images on the huge screen.
My Demo Camera Line Up:
1. Cine Studio RED, set up with long VF/ leveling rod double mags or larger mag on a fisher 11 dolly mounted on a wheels head, with all the cine accessories, studio follow focus, binocs., top mtd lcd, lens light, sliding base plate 6by6matt box with eyebrow siders etc. etc.
2. Underwater RED basic red body special lens in it's underwater housing looking out the dome port from one of the mfgs of underwater housings. looking out of a water tank! best if there is a scuba diver operating it in the tank. acceptable if the operator just reaches down into a smaller aquarium.
3. Hand held cine RED like the renderings with the dual handles except with a zeiss prime lens, light weight follow focus with whip and clip on or light weight support matte box.
4. ENG RED basic body with padded shoulder pod and windowed MYSTERIUM using an HD lens with B mount to PL adapter, with zoom hooked up and powered from the RED body, extra mic. in a holster, four radio receivers on the back, shotgun shock mounted on top in a fuzzy cover.
5. Digital guy RED in a cage, hand held by a guy on a longboard with a full immersion helmet to frame it. Nikon 17to 35 with auto focus, auto focus nikon mount after-market attachment. transmitted video audio out by blue tooth.
6. Steadicam RED Probably MK IV ALIEN derived sled which allows the camera to rotate on the end of a super post so it can crane up and down. This is kinda the bleeding edge of steadicam tech. so quite appropriate to the camera, and Howard would probably love the exposure.

Since i´m not going...(is pretty far for me) and I don´t like Vegas that much and considering the fact that I´ve been there before for a couple of supercross races (with some racers sponsored by Jim BTW) I´ll be happy to know that there´s a good working model and a long-"all kind of situtations" demo DVD or footage ready to be shipped or downloaded...

I'd like to see a GOOD, 45min demo on the workflow options, with it actually working in those options. ie, Shoot a basic scene, with proper lighting, and in front of a green-screen, using different res, framerates, and format options, RAID, SDI, HDMI, into REDCINE, demo REDCINE, export to DPX, and into FCP4K, a quick edit of 15-20 seconds, and then put it up on the 4k projector that you can see from the Sony booth.

double mags or larger mag
Quick, one-response, answer ... but [i]why do you need more than 3 hours/17,000 feet of storage onboard?
Back to the topic at hand...
The first camera is slated to ship around NAB. The first few cameras are all Jim's, so I imagine that any completed camera will be present at the show. Whether there will be hands-on access, a glass case with a spinning camera or anything in between remains to be seen.
Personally? I'm hoping for one production-model camera available to see and possibly toy with. I'd expect it with the LCD, EVF, RED DRIVE and cage/rail/etc.
That said, their booth is 40'x50'.

Brook I like large dreams, large magazines, large mountains, but I would never jump out of a perfectly good airplane...Quick, one-response, answer [I don't want to take this off topic]...
but why do you need more than 3 hours/17,000 feet of storage onboard?
extended interviews in doc. films. waiting for volcanos to erupt. reality shows, actually when I mentioned the big magazine on the other post I didn't mean a huge raid merely one larger that 360 gig. I guess I had in mind more like a 400 ft mag and a 1000 ft mag.
Back to the topic at hand:
With NAB coming up and an actual RED camera close at hand I thought it would be nice to start a thread where people could talk about the first things they want to see under the tree...

Thanks for the response, it makes more sense now. I bet some of the ENG guys will be right there with you.
I was misinterpreting your request: I thought you just didn't like how the camera looked... that you wanted something physically larger to make it feel like you were using a bigger, more awkward camera.
Brook I like large dreams, large magazines, large mountains, but I would never jump out of a perfectly good airplaneYou keep bringing my skydiving up, even when there is no reason to... I understand it's unusual, but it's not all there is. I'm a work-in-progress DP who skydives. I also golf, drive a Subaru and enjoy running. But I'm here to talk about cameras.
Anyway.
We know that the RED guys are either about to pick up or have just recently picked up a Sony 4K projector. There will certainly be 4K projections at NAB, but the question to me is where. Will they be renting a small room as they did last year? A small screening room on the side would be nice.
That said, a 40'x50' booth affords a lot of options; they could have a small theater for playback right on the floor. With that said, there is a lot of stuff to cover:
The camera itself
Lenses
Accessories
Workflow/REDCINE
Playback [mini-theater?]
Development [maybe?]
Beyond that... hands-on demonstrations? A small presentation area? It's tough to say. Last year they had a large screen mounted outside of their tent. They delivered short presentations to address a crowd that would gather in the walkway.
Something tells me there will be a lot of displays around the booth looping the new RED footage. I expect to see a camera [at least a final mockup] and all of its accessories locked up in a case for the casual browsers. I wouldn't be surprised if Frankie made an appearance behind glass as well, though I expect that would confuse those who don't do their homework by reading the sign [Wait, there are TWO RED cameras???].
I hope that there will be a production-model camera on hand that can be used to move through the workflow from start to finish. This is how you build the camera, this is how the camera works, this is what the footage looks like, this is how you get it into a computer, this is REDCINE, etc. etc. etc.
With the amount of companies represented at the show, I expect there to be a lot of visits that come with equipment. That is, maybe somebody from the Steadicam booth will come over and work with the guys at the RED booth to set up a rig for a few minutes. Maybe the Arri guys will come over with some glass. Everybody always seems happy to see how well their products interface with other people's products at the show.
With that said, I imagine RED is working with some third-parties as we speak. I guess we'll find out soon enough...

Is RED planning on announcing what will be at the Red booth this year or will it be a surprise? I'm still trying to decide on whether or not to take off work to drive up.

Is it just me, or is anything in a glass case going to be disappointing at this year's NAB?
Hands on / working demo units are what I hope to see...

I will be not disappointed with just some body+lenses "hands-on"...
...and exact delivery date for all the things (units, lenses, software).

Brook. No I have never wanted a larger more awkward camera. Some parts such as 6by6 matte box/large zooms/more recording capacity will naturally make the camera larger. At last years NAB I asked RED team members about the cage and it was explained to me that it was to allow attachment of unknown future products and to make the camera seem larger and therefore more professional.
I argued with the team members on the floor that I did not feel this form factor projected a more professional image. I also argued against RED GUN. I also suggested interchangeable lens mounts, and was listened to intently. I left the RED booth feeling that these were very smart people, who might make some mis-steps but were listening to potential customers. Having owned Sony cameras in the past where there is NO listening to users, I was very favorably impressed. The mis-step I made was not reserving on the show floor, so now I have a higher number. Which of course after reading the first post here you know is #1150

RED needs to hire a known on-camera talent and do a show report that is fed out to the web. And they need to produce from that show -
H.264 1080p downloads like a QuickTime Movie trailer.
They need to get clips on the Apple HD page.
And they need some Widescreen DVD's produced that we can take and A/B with what Hollywood has to offer. You know the regular Who Ha....
Orders should go from 1400 to 14,000.....25 million bucks is what Sony spends on advertising in one month. 250 Million bucks might get you noticed.

Well since asking for is free.....here i go...I´d like to read (I´m not going) that there was a production model working at NAB with all the main accesories. A long demo with footage from different locations and situations, after all its a cinema camera. I rather see exteriors or interiors shots rather than greenscreen. A final list of the camera tech specs would be nice. Final prices on the accesories too. A user manual to start reading. I know that this looks like asking too much but lets not fool ourselves...we´re all desesperate and the only thing better than having Jim´s Jet is to become reservation holder #1.

I imagine showing up and seeing a special RED door at the red booth.. The only way in is via titanium "R".. so ill flash my bad boy, which will be my belt buckle by the way, and 2 security guards in red tuxedos will open the door for me. ill turn back and wave at my sad friends whom do not have reservations and wish them a good rest of the time at the sony booth, ill of course have a smirk and be saying that in a condescending, cocky, and most defiantly sarcastic manor. Once I enter the red room I will see other reduser reservation holders whom I will recognize by personalized name badges with their reduser names printed with goldleaf. there will be a pool with a nice fountain, streets of gold, and everyone will be laughing and drinking champaign. I imagine there will be a row of leather message chairs and working cameras alllll over the place

i expecting to see all the RED team in those RED decal dresses ..
ok!! maybe just Kelly! .... JJ will have the special pen to sign "R" and they'll be one of those water tanks where those nah-sayers that want to place a order have to take a turn sitting and the reservation holder get to throw a ball to dunk them ...
then on the 4k screen will be a recording of one of the nay-sayers EATING his hat ( the eating hat thing is true ) as he places his order ...
oh yea - and of course some RED equipment ...

Well, I hope that Jims is just taking the first ones (he has Franky and Spike, not ?) as better releasing the first ones to not only #1 but maybe the first few to SHOW ITS DONE. Production needs a little a time - we know that.
Personally? I'm hoping for one production-model camera available to see and possibly toy with. I'd expect it with the LCD, EVF, RED DRIVE and cage/rail/etc.
Ok, an alternative. Just show - no delivery. Convinced.

Yepp, a little stuff for the waiting in between.
