Could it be just me or could the Scarlet be something similar to this?

I would quite like something like that from red.

no way Jose.
... and in my opinion, there' absolutely no reason a RED should make a DSLR.

But isn't Red One essentially that? Just a really high speed DSLR with audio recording ability?

We've already speculated that it might be a still camera, and it's been confirmed that it's a motion camera.

but for the sake of argument, some people wanted RED to make a DSLR. I wasn't trying to say the scarlet was a DSLR, It's obvious its not.
But what would be the point of asking RED to make a DSLR. It's not going to be cheaper. It's not going to be that much better. Get a Nikon D3 or Mark iii.
And yeah, RED being a moving DSLR, it's counter productive.

oh i didnt know motion was confirmed as its NOT IN THE THREAD OF KNOWN FACTS (update? :P)
But... i think we are all overlooking the "pocket" size... i believe it will fit into a coat pocket.. (something the size of an hv20 maybe

there would be no point to Red making a DSLR, there are already amazing DSLRs on the market for great prices. Red wants to make revolutionary products.

I dunno, I wouldn't be surprised if RED put out a super badass SLR at some point. It'd probably have interchangeable mounts and a really freakin' high resolution full-frame sensor. Hell, it'd probably be some giant 44MPX sensor with the image processing of a Canon [not literally, but in quality] with the lens mount of a Nikon [finally combining awesome processing with awesome glass] and a little bit of badass sprinkled on top. At a reasonable price. Jim is, after all, a photographer.
But I don't think that's Scarlet.
I personally expect a hoverboard out of RED at NAB. Anything less and I'll be disappointed.

I don't think they will put out a hover board this year at NAB; but maybe a video of someone using a hover board with great FX all shot on a RED ONE!

I'd love to see a SLR like Brook just described. Especially one with a little bit of badass sprinkled on top.
Hoverboards? I'll take two.

I'd buy one. And judging by Red's other prices, it would probably run $450.
(And don't forget to add optional 8" LCD and internal GPS tagging and WI-FI. Oh, and underwater shooting abilities up to 100'. Or maybe twin lenses for stereoscopic photography.)

RED Pocket Professional Digital CINEMA Camera...
That also happens to take stills, no doubt.
Nathan Garofalos

It probably will, but what is the need if you can import it into RED CINE, then make a freeze frame, save as a jpg, then you have your still you were looking for.

I'd love a Red "dslr" too, but Jim said the emphasis was on "pocket". So considering the size of a typical slr lens...
A thought... a major factor that separates a pro vs non-pro camera is the ability to use "pro lenses". They're interchangeable and wouldn't necessarily fit in your pocket unless you have large pockets like Jim. So what sort of lens could be on a "pocket camera" that would be considered professional?

Leica has some very professional fixed lens film cameras. in the $4k+ range

My money is still that it will by a hybrid still and motion camera. More and more photojournalists are using video and there is a need for something that will do both professionaly.

Samsung just announced Samsung Unveils 10 Mega-Pixel DSC With High-Definition Video Capability but only ability to record video in 720p high-definition at a maximum frame rate of 30fps.
Maybe Scarlet is 2K or 4K version of this?

I'm leaning more and more towards the photo/video combination myself. Why in the world would Jim, err... Mr. Jannard (I really don't know him on a first name basis now do I) state that this thing is a "motion capture camera". That's just such an odd way to put it if it was a video camera/digital cinema camera whichever term you'd like to use.
To me it seems that he intentionally used this phrase either to spark crazy speculation, add to the confusion, or to signify that it's not just a small video camera. Now after spending about a year reading his posts here on RedUser, I do believe he revels in the speculation and gets off on being mysterious and vague, but I'm willing to bet that the use of the phrase "motion capture camera" wasn't just some little riddle he put out there for fun.
Look, the guy has a background as a serious hobbiest in photography, owns a business that just made a kick ass video (cinema) camera, and the two technologies of photo and video are quickly converging as is evidenced by the hordes of still cameras being released that have the ability to shoot high quality (relatively) full motion video. Why wouldn't Red endeavor to make the first hybrid photo/video camera that has full professional controls for both spectrums? I'm talking myself into this theory as I go here.
Anyway, those are just the thoughts bumping around in my brain this morning. As always they are subject to change at any time and without warning.

It would be folly for Red to try to compete in the DSLR market; both Canon and Nikon offer complete systems with user interfaces that have been tested and refined to a very high order. Starting from scratch in this arena would be daunting to say the least.
To paraphrase, "it's the software, stupid."
Just think about the birthing pains Red has been experiencing; few problems have been hardware related; it's the software that's devilishly difficult to fashion.
I would think it would be far easier for Nikon, Canon, et al, to produce a professional big-chip motion picture camera than for Red to develop a "simple" stills camera. Just take a stroll through the menu structure of a Canon or Nikon; highly sophisticate with myriad user-defined controls.
I'm hoping Red's new camera will be a complement to the Red, probably with a 16MM-sized chip, ideal for B camera applications such as car mounts. If that proves to be the case, I'm in the party for sure!
One thing is certain; NAB is going to be exciting!
Good shooting and best regards to all,
Leo
