Hi Jim,
If possible please tell us how long will it take the red team to reveal at least some basic features of the upcoming Scarlet ....the top 5 priority thread makes it pretty clear what the potential customers expect foremost about Scarlet, but my question when we can expect some basic disclosure of this upcoming beauty we've been all fantasizing so much about for about a year now...so we can keep our imagination on ground level...basically a short info teaser would be nice before making the official nab revelation....

I totally agree. It will be very disappointing if a lot of us shows up at NAB looking to purchase Scarlet and it is nothing we can use.

Well, I think Red would keep this for themselves until they are very clear about the new camera. So I think we have to be patient...I read somewhere Jim wants this camera totally finished and ready before it goes out to the market. Maybe they arenīt totally clear about Scarlettīs features right now, so they wonīt reveal until they made up their minds...

I've never seen so much hype about a new camera. Jim's a genius!

Weird, there was a thread asking nearly this same question and it was deleted yesterday.

They have to see what we want first then they will build it! :-)

But...they have talked about this camera since NAB'07...

do you really think it will be "nothing we can use"? i don't need one but i want one and maybe i'll find a need for one in time. but if it turns out to be an overpriced hd camcorder (highly doubtful based on redone features), i'll just walk over to the sony and panasonic booth. red wants to enter this prosumer market and there are a lot of options out there.

We are not asking for details..we can wait for those until NAB..just a sneak preview would be nice...this way we could plan our investments beforehand and stop thinking whether to buy a sony ex1 or not....

If you need a camera now you need a camera now.
If you can wait until NAB then what's the rush?

I bet we'll know most of the pertinent info by the end of the day on April 14, 2008. :)

I bet your right Mr. Kilgroe. But what about the few of us who wont be at NAB. Would it be appropriate for someone like me to go, even though I'm 19?

Go if you want to go. You may have fun... You'll get to see a lot of cool and very expensive toys. Could be a learning experience if you go or meet up with the right people.
19 and in Vegas... You'll feel pretty restricted outside of the trade show and a few of the local acts or family attractions. But you probably won't want to go just to check out the camera. All the beans will be spilled online anyway and Jim has said there won't be any reservations taken for Scarlet. Prototypes will be shown, but we don't know what that means. Will they be in a display case? Will they be out where we can touch them? Functional or no?

I WANT TO GO!!! I think I would have a lot of fun getting to see and talk to everyone about their products. I would LOVE nothing more than to be able to talk to people at RED, that would be great... Honestly, they have inspired me to believe that anything is possible. But I don't want to feel out of place talking with people because of my age, or feel like I'm a burden or pest for someone to talk to.

You should go Nathan. Last year was my first year and frankly, I didn't go anywhere in a week's time that was 21 and over except a high-end wine bar one evening with some friends. This year I'll bring my wife to hit some shows and clubs with on the off evenings (first three, before the show starts).

It boils down to "should I buy a different camera now or just rent for a little while longer?"
I have a few projects coming up, several of which begin in March (one month before NAB).
If I buy an EX1 for $8000, that's a fairly sizable investment for me. (I know it's not to some, but it's a good chunk of change to me.) I won't be able to buy another camera for a few years. If Scarlet is more expensive, or turns out to be a helmet cam/iconix style, there's no point in waiting for her (with my shooting needs).
On the other hand, if Scarlet is the bee's knees but she doesn't come out until next year, I'll keep shooting, of course, but just rent a camera job to job. This will cut into profits a bit, but I think it's gonna be worth it. Then, I'll buy Scarlet when she's available.
So it sure would be nice to know resolution, lens options, and a ballpark price.
But I understand how the teases and rumors and wishlists are a great marketing tool.

sounds like reds going to change the whole market not just high end. it'll force them all to bring their games up. scarlet is probably aimed at broadcast/indies who can't afford red one
the more people they can get to buy into their technology and workflow the better and this will force panny , jvc , canon and sony to up their game not just on the very high end

The Scarlett will certainly create a hype and be an incremental change if well executed however dising the opposition is petty and to say the likes of Sony, Canon, Panny et al have sat on their hands is altogether stupid they got into using HD / CMOS etc long before Red and still produce the vast amount of output via their cameras whether professional or consumer.
What Red is doing is disruptive incremental change and that is healthy but anyone who thinks they will not have competition is naive moreover that leads to the Henry Ford you can have it any color as long as it is black or in this case Red, long live competition.
