Don't they (Red) keep stressing the term "pocket"? What you have there my friend is the Red One. You can buy it right now if you'd like.

Yeah well my pockets are bigger than yours.
To be honest... the term pocket is the biggest turn off about this thing so far for me personally. If it wasn't RED we were talking about I would skip right over this thing faster than you can blink.
My definition of a "professional" pocket camera must be different than yours too because there is nothing professional about those little plastic so called pocket cameras. You can't slap a 4k chip in one and call it professional imo.
I do agree it might be a bit too close to the One but hey... it's what I personally want. More of a smaller, guerrilla run and gun type setup with auto features.

Obviously Red's not going to slap a 4k chip in one and call it professional. But if after they replace the sensor they replace the plastic body with a machined aluminum one, replace the plastic, fixed-focus lens with interchangeable, fully manual glass lenses, replace the cheap body-mount mic with mini-xlrs, replace the low-data rate MPEG4 with Redcode RAW, replace the small, low-res lcd with a larger, high-res one - I don't see how anyone could not call it a professional pocket camera. It might not be what you want or need - but that wouldn't change what it is.

So that's what would happen if an HVX200 was cross-bred with an iPhone. Scary, but interesting.

Hahaha. I too get the feeling that most speculators here keep missing the point. People, this is gonna be a friggin' pocket camera!!! get that through your skulls!!! In attempting to read between the lines of some speculations posted so far, I get the impression that many here are doing too much wishful thinking hoping that in the end it'll really be a RED ONe with all its incredible features, but only smaller and more affordable...not gonna happen cap'n!
Now, saw that HVX200 in half and you get 2 SCARLETs.

You are omitting the huge possibility of it being a professional pocket camera by means of being a small and professional camera that can fit atop helmets, in corners, etc. (think oversize lipstick cam). That could easily be done very, very professionally.

Oversize lipstick would be cool, just duct tape it to your helmet for any extreme shots, or tight locations. Even better is you can carry it with you all the time and film everything. Don't you just hate it when your driving, and the sun is setting in a picture perfect way. And you think to yourself, I wish I had my camera with me. Now you can have your camera with you and get those awesome sunset shots all onto video, and make freeze frames of them. It doesn't get much better than that...

A Red version of the HVX is a product I would buy. Nikon or Canon mount. Done.

This is not Scarlet, but is it RUBY for 2009? Jim is reading all our wishes and maybe and hopefully this will appear in 2009?

I hope it will look more like a stylish old school hasselblad with a cursive insign "Scarlet". That would be elegant.

When referring to redpocket....I think Jim had in mind how deep are your pockets....and that we will all have to dig in our pockets a little deeper and buy scarlet...

I think the body of the Scarlet will be much closer to an HV20 in terms of general shape, but with a lens mount for C-mount or 35mm lenses. (So it will be larger once you add a lens and an LCD.) Also, recording to CF card. Shoot handheld when you need, strap to a skateboard or helmet, or throw this on rails, add matte box, etc.
I would love to see Red eventually fill in the middle ground with something like the Sony EX1, but fixing all the stupid mistakes of that camera.

Well, I was at CES yesterday and saw the new Canon HF10 and HF100 cameras. They were quite small, smaller than the HV20 but not as small as, say, the bottom portion of the HV10. I was sold as soon as I played with one and saw the image quality in 60i and 24p mode, didn't bother with 30p as I've seen enough of that out of my GL1, and how easy it was to use, very much like my HV20. But then I read in the brochure that it was AVCHD-based so I may wait to see some reviews first.
If RED could make something small and impressive like that with full manual controls, REDCODE recording, and all at an affordable price, I would buy one immediately.

Remember that Jim has mentioned putting it to Sony with his new products. My guess is it has to intrude on a large market that Sony has had for a while. I'm sure if the prosumer market was it, I would imagine this is intended to kick the ass of the EX. This market is growing larger and larger by the week. From News Journo/camerapeople to independant filmamkers and film schools. A 10k price tag including a short zoom would work.....That probably leaves 6-7K for the camera.

I hope and think that something about the size of a canon 2/3 broadcast lens would a perfect body size. I don't want to use my eng lens on it, but like the feel of handholding it with without the dvcam body attached.
