View Full Version : Kona LHe vs DeckLink HD Extreme vs Intensity Pro for MacPro?

So, after getting one of the new MacPro's this week and I am looking to replace my AJA IO LA for monitoring on my JVC Production monitor. Originally, I was looking at the Kona LHe and the DeckLink HD Extreme. However, I realized today that all I would be using the card for is monitoring (for CC) in SD. It seems crazy since I'm not hooking it up to decks or anything that I need to buy the two high end cards...

Has anyone used the Intensity Pro before like this?

I did a quick test and saw that Apple Color would send to the Intensity Card. It's not 4:4:4... but at the same time my output will probably be 1080P or SD so the Intensity should give the proper preview. Of course, salespeople will tell you SDI is the best... I'm just not sure if SDI vs component or HDMI really makes a difference for monitoring purposes alone.

dunno.. but some swear component is as good as sdi.

Thing is sdi option cards are so bleeding expensive.. unlike actual i/o cards..

That is great to hear Joel. I had forgotten to see if the card would be supported in Color. I still need to figure out a good workflow with Color and FCP.

with the intensity pro you should be good to go 1080 hdmi to a plasma and component to a grade 1

no 24p with Intensity or Intensity Pro - only broadcast frame rates.

That doesn't really make any difference, because in Final Cut, 3:2 pulldown is added for real time previews, and in Color, well, there isn't any real time play anyway.

I will let you all know how it works when my Intensity Pro comes in next week. I hope it supports 24P it some form because that's pretty much all I shoot for clients.

Kona LH also works with Color and also accelerates some effects in FCP and Color. I am getting RT 3-way CC on 2-3 full layers of uncompressed HD on 2x2.5GHz G5 with Kona LH with no problem. Ask someone with it to show it to you and you will be impressed.

not sure about hd-sdi, but i once wanted to upgrade my old meridian avid from sd component to sd sdi input - i called avid and because of some company event the avid tech guy was answering the avid sales guy phone: he said he wouldn't recommend buying the sdi option because there will be no improvement qualitywise...

Is this documented as being any faster than any other card anywhere? I've never seen a side by side test anywhere - but I haven't looked real hard either.
