Hi there

I've recently switch camera systems from Canon over to Nikon as I needed to use a manual aperture with my M2 adaptor and thought I was future proofing myself with Red offering a Nikon mount.

I used to have a Canon 20D and now have a Nikon D200 and must say how disappointed I am with the Nikon. It chip is no where near the quality of the canon and low light photo's that I used to take on my Canon are horrible on the Nikon.

I like taking available light pictures at night and the Nikon isn't very well suited for this compared to the Canon.

I think this has something to do with the size of the chip.

I'm hoping REDOne will perform like my Canon and not like the Nikon.

A lot of my photographer friends swear by the Nikon as thats what they have always used but I must say having had both the Canon is the winner, but is that just cause I started with Canon so am bias?

Anyone else have the same findings?

Regards
Rory

The Canon CMOS chips use very aggresive noise suppresion at the sensor level. It is very effective at lowering Lumanance noise but does very little for chromanance. Nikon is a bit more hands off in thier noise reduction allowing more Luma noise and giving a more film like appearance (Grain) IMHO. This gives the user choices in post on RAW files or the level of noise reduction in camera on Jpegs. Nikon's very good Capture NX software allows this as well as Adobe Camera Raw. Over all the diffrences are minimal up to ISO 1600. On the screen at 100% noise always looks exagerated, but in prints it's impossible to tell a Nikon from a Canon even at this hi ISO. Beyond that I think the Canon 5D is the only camera capable of producing useable ISO 3200 images. Iv'e owened one and sold it, it's just not that much cleaner. In the end most choose what's comfortable, I have a lot of Nikon glass and rarely shoot above ISO 400 so for me there's no issue. If you really feel the D200 isn't for you buy a Nikon to EOS adapter and get another 20/30D.
