I have been mounting my quickplate on a universal mount on rails just behind the rear top mount. I like having everything on universal mounts so that i can quickly break down the camera with a few turns of a wingnut and then put it all in my backpack.

However I just got some 8" rods for the top of the camera and I love how much slimmer it is with those, but since the rods now only go between the two top mounts, it eliminates the ability to mount the quickplate on the rods BEHIND the topmount.

Is there some way to attach the quickplate to the rear top mount's 1/4-20 holes with a quick release, possibly something from Zacuto?

or any other non-zacuto ideas would be good too. I need a quick non allan wrench solution to break down and setup my camera (attaching/detaching the quickplate..

Why not extend the 8" rods out the back to support your quickplate... and just avoid using the front top-mount channels altogether?

that is a damn fine idea. i am still wondering if there are other super ways of setting up and breaking down besides the universal mount, though. just want to know what other options are out there.

also i was planning on sometimes using a side handle near the front of the top rails, so i couldnt scoot the 8" rods back, i would have to use larger rods, and im trying to stick with the 8" ones just cuz i like how small everything is with them. i know its kind of extreme/silly but i wanna know what else is out there.

* but that is safe to do? just have the rods going through one set of holes (channels, is that the term?)

i was also wondering about my 12" rods only going through the front channels on the bottom rails for my handles/handlemount/universal plate w/ LCD, is that safe to do, or do they have to be secured at the back as well?

I am using 6" rods and push them all the way back as Brook suggested...even lighter

and yes, it is actually more common this way.
