From people who've gone before -
Is NAB a very expensive deal when all is said and done? As far as the hotel, getting into the convention, food, et cetera? At least I don't have to worry about flying in...

NAB can be cheap.. you just gotta book early. Vegas now has a nice skytram that will take you from most of the strip hotels to the convention center, no more 30 minute painful walks or 2 hour waits for taxis.

I can imagine hotels could get fairly pricey. It would be great if we could pool our resources here and share where the best hotel and other deals are.

we should get a reduser hotel deal from one of the hotels.. im sure we could get at least a wing in one of the hotels with all the members going, and get a good rate on them all.

That is a great idea Jarred. Count me in please... I am usually booked and cannot go to NAB.

Hi Finner,
The hotels don't put up their prices, just the cheaper places sell out first.

I based my company in Las Vegas from 2002 to 2004. I have the area pretty well dialed in. If any REDUser members are curious about Las Vegas, possibilities for lodging, or places to see in or outside Las Vegas, PM me and I'll be glad to help you out with some info!
If you've never been there, you can view a demo reel for Las Vegas, and the trailer for one of my productions in Las Vegas, in the Media Lounge of my production web site (Cut4).
Cheers!

The only thing I did wrong last year was spend money on the After Effects courses. Total bust, boring teachers, poor presentation. Won't do that again.
Save your money. (It was my first NAB).
I switched to another course line on the last day of classes and sat in Jeffry Fishers' audio for video class (using Vegas). That one was excellent. Anything Douglas Spotted Eagle (aka Spot) does is guaranteed to be good too.
Count me in for a hotel room block. I'll wait until something is posted here.

Interest here also. Maybe someone who has attended previously can post a ballpark breakdown of expenses. Convention fees, seminars, special events, hotel rates etc.

Great idea. Anyone who can make any sugestions about NAB would be great. I went to the NAB site and could not even find out the price to attend. What seminars are worth attending as well would be great information. What I did find was prices on seminars which seemed very expensive ($500+ for a couple days of a seminar seems like a lot to me unless there is hands on work involved).

I paid about $40/night at NAB last year. That said, the hotel was named "The Downtowner" and I got to listen to gunshots all night. Remember that background I used for the Jarred comp (http://homepage.mac.com/brookwillard/comp1.jpg)? Well, that was the hotel where I stayed. I guess I survived.
I'll definitely be at NAB this year - hopefully for the whole time [I was only there two days last year]. I really can't wait... and unless there's a "Brook Visits RED Headquarters" thread in the near future, I can't wait to meet you all there. :D

BTW, Jarred or Rob, under what conference sub heading should one register? I see the one for broadcast engineering etal is for $795. Please shed some more light into this if you can... thx.

I was able to register for free with a VIP pass last year. Unless I've missed some new NAB literature in the mail with my number on it, the option is MIA so far this year.

the seminars are a little lame.. To see all the cool stuff all you need is the free VIP pass that im sure someone will post this year.. that lets you goto all the booths and see the free stuff. Apple usually has free seminars you can sit into along with some other companies.
Some of the Keynotes are worth going too.. but the seminars unless you know whos teaching them are a little iffy.

I have been many times and usually do the Post/Production World conference (it used to go by another name). The quality of the classes is hit or miss but the good ones are gold. Douglas Spotted Eagle is strong, Gary Adcock always gives me info I can use, Phillip Hodgetts is very sharp, and more whose names I have forgotten - but not their knowledge. This year they are offering a DoP track that I am considering, they also have a digital tech program but it looks like its mostly for site installation issues not field acquistion.
Hotel costs can be substantial, the first few years I drove up in my pick-up camper and showered at the health club. The last few years I have stayed as cheap and close as possible so I could walk to the LVCC - there are never enough taxis or bus seats.
I think a hotel REDwing sounds like a gas. It will be particularly valuable if there are shipping units by then and we can combine our brain power in figuring out best practices. I have rezzie #19 and will bring the rig if it is in my hands by NAB.
My hotel input would be not too pricey and within a mile (2km) of the LVCC - the Skytram is great but the lines get huge during a show the size of NAB. I want to at least have the option of walking.
In order to make this cost effective we need to figure it out sooner than later. Jarred, count me in your head count - looking forward to it.

This sounds great Jarred. I am a liitle unsure of how you go about getting the free VIP pass that someone will post, can you explain further? Also how many days do you recomend going for and why?

The Hilton is known for being open to special rates for large groups. Plus you are 2 minutes walking from the convention. And they have a pretty good buffet too.
I stayed at the El Cortez last year for 39.00 a night. Not a good place, didn't even have 3 prong outlets. Great Mexican restaurant across the street though. Very old time Las Vegas feel. Not very safe, close to downtown LV, with the over head screen and street players though. It was cheaper to take a taxi from the hotel then stay on the strip when I booked.

Would be interested to hear from others who have gone solo, but from what I understand you can get better rates from hotels not affiliated with the show.
Just use Travelocity or similar internet travel services to find deals on small numbers of rooms. And stay away from Friday and Saturday nights too, thats when the highest occupancy nights occur, much better deals on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I have always found good rates using hotwire for vegas around NAB. I know I don't like that they don't tell you where you are staying until you book. But I have found that I usally get what I want.
As Jarred said use the Tram. It will save you allot of time and allot of money.

We'll definitely have to assemble a REDuser get-together of some kind...
Thanks to Zakaree, I'm officially registered.
For those that are registering: there are four places to add other people's names/emails for a free VIP pass. If somebody on here can't find a way to register for free, post your name and email. That way somebody who is registering can shoot you a free VIP pass.

I was afraid someone would ask where I have stayed the last few years and my faulty memory would become public record. There is a Travelodge or maybe it was Comfort Inn right accross from the Hard Rock. There is a hotel that used to be called the Blair Suites (easy to remember ;) ) that was close and while the property was tired the rates were low, the walk was short and it seemed safe enough. I think there is also a Best Western in that area as well.
If there is enough interest I can research this and present options to the group. Perhaps we need a thread specifically for this effort? Jarred?

We stayed at that Comfort Inn at last year's NAB, it was decent enough and the pool was nice. FWIW, we just booked a couple of weeks ago at the Best Western Mardi Gras, just a 2 minute walk from the Convention Center, it was $150 per night if you're AAA (we're bunking up like a bootlegger's secret stash).

Downtowner was $40/night. We drove from the hotel to a huge NAB lot [$6 or so] and walked right into the convention center. Definitely the cheap way to do NAB.
That said, nobody should ever stay at the Downtowner. Ever.

Heh, 2 years ago we stayed at a place down on Fremont St. The beds, the BEDS. Or should I say masterful examples of minimalist sado-maschism. Ooh, I'm getting knots just reliving it.

That's how it's listed in the NAB tool at the moment. The first is the big booth on the floor. The second is way in the back, looks like a conference room. Probably similar to NAB '06!
Are you coming to IBC Curt?

We wanted to go in 2006 but our products weren't quite ready. I've always wanted to visit Amsterdam... If our stuff is as big a hit as Jarrred and I think then I'm gonna go out on a limb and say yes, its a definite possibility.
